The Company
• Created as a result of initial reforms through the support of GIZ (formerly GTZ)• Formerly a department of Lusaka City Council• Registered in 1989 and started operations in 1990.
• In 2008 LWSC was requested by GRZ to take over operations in the whole of Lusaka Province
• New shareholding:– Lusaka City Council 60%– Kafue District Council 20%– Chongwe District Council 10 %– Luangwa District Council 10%– Chirundu (yet to be allocated shares)– Chilanga (yet to be allocated shares)– Sibuyunji– Rufunsa

Operational Areas• Population of about 2.3 million people (now estimated above
3 million including transit population)– About 70% of the population reside in peri urban areas– Peri-urban areas ( about 34 compounds)
• These are high density largely unplanned settlements.• This segment of the urban population present a challenge in the
provision of water and sanitation services.• Licensed Water Trusts (currently 9 in number) to provide water
services to some Peri-urban areas.
• Customer Segments:– Domestic- 81,806 connections- 92% of LWSC Customer Base – Commercial-6, 039 connections-7% of LWSC Customer Base– GRZ – 464 connections-1% of LWSC Customer Base

• Lack of Infrastructure capacity to meet demand• Poor culture of bill payment• Poor culture of reporting Faults• Unplanned settlements with vast challenges such as space to lay
pipes, encroachments, etc• Vandalism of infrastructure• Poor knowledge on environmental sanitation• Power outages-Boreholes• Socio- Economic• High ground water levels- PUS• Rocks which increase the cost of construction• Narrow and Meandering routes for water and sewer pipes to pass-
