I have been impressed by the quality of lessons delivered to students and the rich learning that occurs in every classroom, every day of the week. I am sure you will join me in congratulating both Tiana-Lee Thorne and Paige Cameron on their personal achievements. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Aunty Jennie McKenny for her efforts as part of the organising committee for the night. Upcoming Events As always, the end of the school year is a busy time. I encourage you keep up to date with our Facebook page and our website for information about these exciting occasions. 2013 We are getting ready to form classes for 2013 with all teachers already being informed which classes they will teach next year. Our school has grown significantly throughout 2012 and as such most of our classes are looking full. However, we can always find room for more students who live in the Lurnea area. To help us finalise our classes, we ask that any parents who are yet to enrol their children in Kindergarten for 2013, do so as a matter of importance. It is essential that we get a clear picture of student numbers so we can avoid having disruptions to learning in Term 1 due to classes needing to be reorganised.

Please pass on the message to any friends or neighbours you have as well – ENROL FOR KINDERGARTEN 2013 NOW!

Uniform Our students continue to look outstanding in their uniforms and school hats – I have had many compliments from visitors and teachers from other schools who comment on how stylish and smart our students look. Mrs Hedger is doing an amazing job filling orders for many families – if you need to purchase more items for the uniform, please contact her on 0467 960 428. A reminder that the school hat is now the only acceptable hat to be worn at school. Enjoy your week! David Sim Principal

From The Deputy Principals

Dear Parents and Carers We continue to marvel at the quality of education provided to our students here at Lurnea Public School. Our role allows us to continuously visit dynamic classrooms and witness innovative lessons that engage our students and consequently improve student learning outcomes. This term we are visiting Numeracy lessons and will continue to focus on Intellectual Quality and Quality Learning Environments. Did you know? Feedback is an essential part of effective learning. It helps students understand the subject being studied and gives them clear guidance on how to improve their learning. Research states that 'academic feedback is more strongly and consistently related to achievement than any other teaching behaviour.' Feedback can improve a student's confidence, self-awareness and enthusiasm for learning. Providing students with constructive feedback enhances learning and improves assessment performance. We encourage you to provide your child with constructive feedback on a daily basis. Presentation Day This week you should have received a letter informing you about our up and coming Presentation Day that is scheduled for Tuesday 11 December. Our Presentation Day Assemblies are a magnificent way for us to reflect and celebrate the many achievements of 2012. We ask you to save the date and attend these special events. This year the organisation is as follows:

Time Event 9:30am - 10:45am Primary Assembly

(Years 3-6 in the Hall) 11:00am – 11:50am Lunch Break and

Gold Award Ceremony (Library) 12:15pm – 1:00pm Infants Assembly

(Kindergarten – Year 2 in the Hall) Have a great week! Lauren Dunlop and Lisa Stipanovic

Kindergarten Orientation 2013

On Wednesday 7 November, we hosted our second Kindergarten Orientation morning for children attending Lurnea Public School in 2013. Throughout the morning, the children actively participated in a number of activities including playdough, pasta threading, drawing, letter blocks, dramatic play and construction. The children all settled beautifully and enjoyed getting to know the Kindergarten teachers and one another. After a fun morning, full of play-based activities we listened to a story about the Three Billy Goats Gruff, before heading home. Kindergarten Orientation mornings provide a valuable opportunity for both parents and children, to engage our school community and become familiar with ‘Big School’ prior to starting next year. Our next date for Kindergarten Orientation:Wednesday 14 November.

Welcome to our new students…

Each newsletter we would like to warmly welcome our newest students and their families to Lurnea Public School. We are glad that you chose our great school to become a part of.

On Thursday 70 kindergarten students attended Taronga Zoo. All the students were excited to be attending their major excursion for this year. The children sat in the coach with smiles on their faces, singing to the tune of ‘We’re Going at The Zoo’ when suddenly an eerie silence fell throughout the coach as the DVD player was switched on. Upon arrival to the zoo the children ate their recess before visiting the Seal Theatre. After that the students walked around in their class groups, looking at their favourite animals. Some of these included tigers, lions, birds, giraffes, zebras, a hippo, meerkats, bears and finally spiders. The Kindergarten students were very fortunate that at the time of their visit to Taronga Zoo there was also a robot dinosaur exhibition on show. As the student ventured through the zoo they were also privy to seeing the various life sized dinosaurs scattered throughout the zoo. Thank you to all who attended, making this a special day for our youngest students at Lurnea. Mrs Kerry Thorley ES1 Stage Organiser

Kindergarten Visit to Taronga Zoo

Stage 2 Visit Bicentennial Park In Stage 2 we have a range of different learning styles. An excursion is a practical way of allowing students to enhance their knowledge and understanding in a different approach to their learning that suits any learner. Stage 2 visited Bicentennial Park at Olympic Park Homebush on Tuesday 5 November. We were able to escape the fast routines of a normal day and enter into an enjoyable day exploring the beautiful Badu Mangroves. The boardwalk allowed us to walk into the heart of the wetlands, keeping our eyes open ready to spot tiny mangrove creatures and see first hand what human impact can do to our environments. Stage 2 was able to consolidate what the difference is between State and National Parks. Stage 2 students also took advantage of the wide-open spaces in Bicentennial Park at Olympic Park by using up our energy playing and practising our sports skills. Stage 2 left the excursion with a bag full of new knowledge to take back to school to continue their learning of State and National Parks. Mrs Daniela Pintabona Stage 2 Teacher

Sports Report Term 4

OZ TAG On Friday 9 November our Junior and Senior team travelled back to Victoria Park for the last Gala Day of the year. Unfortunately I couldn’t make it, but Miss Agostino and Mr Gray took the excited group to play their 6 games. At the start of the day they had very warm temperatures and their spirits were high, winning most games. But as the day went, dark clouds covered the fields, as did the pouring rain! We played 4 games each and 2 games were washed out (as was Ms Agostino’s hair!!) Both teachers were very impressed with the students’ performance and their continuing sportsmanship. I would like to say ‘thank you’ to the teachers and parents who visited us on the Gala Days and to the students for a wonderful term of Oz Tag. I hope to see many students try out next year! Signing off, Mrs Robertson Oz Tag Coach P.S Both teams came 3rd in the final results. WELL DONE!

Basketball The basketball teams completed their Gala Day competition last Friday. All members of the squad conducted themselves extremely well showing improved skills, sportsmanship and a great deal of team attitude. I commend each and every member of the squad for their wonderful representation of our school. The final results are not know as yet, but everyone played their best and had fun. As one team member put it "this is a great game, but it makes you very tired and sweaty". Great job kids! I'm extremely proud of your efforts. Fond regards Mrs. Riley Basketball Coach

Our PBIS team has continued to work hard to set our students up for success and prepare some important lessons. So far this term we have covered:

1. Being respectful at the canteen area. 2. Doing our best and being confident. 3. Anti-Bullying – Lurnea says NO to bullying! 4. Respecting the school environment. 5. Anti-Bullying 2 - spreading rumours

Other topics to be covered this term include: Week 6 – We share and include others. Week 7 – Being respectful in the office and toilet areas. Week 8 – Lurnea kids are patient. Week 9 – Lining up Week 10 – Respecting property. Week 11 – Being safe during the holidays.

Miss Ricaud and Miss Wilson have done a wonderful job of setting up a Peer Support Program for our Year 6 students. They have taught them important leadership skills and given them the important task of leading the PBIS lessons in each classroom across the school on Thursdays. So far the students have enjoyed the opportunity to spread our important PBIS messages and are being wonderful role models for our students across the school. Below is just a small sample of some the awesome work our students have been doing in Peer Support – PBIS lessons. To see more student work please visit our schools website and click on the Student Wellbeing tab and then the PBIS Lessons link. Jason Clarke Assistant Principal - Student Success
