HAPPY LUNAR NEW YEAR!Celebrate the Year of the Monkey and explore Chinese, Korean, and
Vietnamese traditions while enjoying activities, demonstrations, and
performances throughout the day. As you travel through the Museum and
enjoy the art, be sure to look for the vibrant floral arrangements around
the building and visit the MFA’s new display in Gallery 274, featuring art
from the prosperous and vibrant Song dynasty (960–1279)—regarded
as the pinnacle of Chinese art and aesthetics.
Community Arts Initiative Partner Spotlight Shapiro Family Courtyard | 10 am–4 pm
Students from the Boston Chinatown Neighborhood
Center and the greater BCNC community collected
written wishes and hopes for the New Year on strips
of ribbon to create this collaborative work of art.
The MFA’s ten Community Arts Initiative program
partners also participated in the project, adding
ribbons from their communities. Drop in to view
the work and add your own wish to the sculpture.
Pop-Up Performance: Syncopasian Gallery 268 | 1:30–1:45 and 2:30–2:45 pm
Join Syncopasian, MIT’s East Asian student
a cappella group and 2015 Collegiate Champions
of the TV competition series, Sing That Thing! The group aims to spread Asian popular music
and culture throughout the MIT and Greater
Boston communities. Their unique repertoire
features songs in English, Chinese, Japanese,
and Korean.
Lion Dance: Gund Kwok Remis Auditorium | 1:30–2:15 and 3:30–4:15 pm
Watch a festive Chinese Lion Dance procession
and enjoy an interactive performance by Gund
Kwok, the only Asian women’s Lion and Dragon
Dance troupe in New England. Free performance tickets are available at Remis Auditorium Box Office starting one hour before show times. First come, first served; limited availability. Free ticket required for entry.
WordSong presents Dawn Alfond Auditorium | 2:30–3:15 pm
Join WordSong, a Boston-based nonprofit
organization, for this one-of-a-kind interactive
concert. Four composers present Dawn, by Korean
poet Kim Sowohl translated by Sekyo Nam Haines,
with unique musical interpretations that connect
musicians and listeners through a shared artistic
experience. The concert features work by Boston
composers Howard Frazin, Binna Kim, Adam Simon,
and Tom Schnauber. Performed by David Kravitz,
baritone, and Linda Osborn, piano. Free performance tickets are available at Alfond Auditorium ticket desk starting 30 minutes before show time. First come, first served; limited availability. Free ticket required for entry.

spotlighting works of art in the MFA’s Asian art

Rent a mobile MFA Guide to explore the Museum’s
collections. A selection of highlights is narrated
in Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese,
Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and ASL. Many
stops are accessible to visitors who are Deaf or

Talk: The Art of Têt Vietnamese Lunar New Year Alfond Auditorium | Noon–1 pm
Learn how Têt is celebrated by Vietnamese in
this interactive presentation with a mini-language
lesson, art, and performance. Meet co-presenters
Pham T. Huê, executive director, Vietnamese
American Initiative for Development, Inc. (VietAID);
Dr. Trân V. Thành, Boston College School of Social

Enjoy an interactive demonstration of Gong-Fu—
a form of Chinese martial arts—and a lion dance
by children from the Chinese Culture Connection.

Participate in a traditional bowing and greeting
ceremony practiced in Korea during New Year
celebrations with members of the Korean Cultural
Society of Boston. Space is limited; first come, first served.
Meditation for the Monkey Mind Gallery 280 10:30–11 am and 1–1:30 pm
Begin the Year of the Monkey by taming your
“monkey mind.” Learn the fine art of meditation
with Elyse Foster. All ages welcome.
Art-Making Activities Monkey Puppets Gallery 168 | 10 am–4 pm
Did you know that 2016 is the Year of the Monkey?
Make a marvelous monkey puppet, inspired by
works in the MFA's collection.
Bok Jumoni Shapiro Family Courtyard | 10 am–4 pm
It is a New Year tradition in Korea for children to
bow in respect to their elders in a ceremony called
saebae. Following the ceremony, children are given
money and mementos to put in small bags called
bok jumoni. Make your own bok jumoni for keeping
coins and tokens. ASL interpretation 11–11:45 am.
Chinese Hand Drums Education Center in Druker Family Pavilion, Room 159 | 10 am–4 pm
According to Chinese tradition, making lots of noise
keeps the old year’s evil spirits away from the new
year. Design and create a Chinese hand drum to
make some noise to ring in the New Year!ASL interpretation 11–11:45 am.
Family Art Cart Sharf Visitor Center | 10 am–4 pm
Choose from activities designed to guide you
through the galleries with fun facts, scavenger
hunts, games, and more. Art Cards are available

Korea Foundation Lecture: Post-Human Urban Living and Creativity Remis Auditorium Wednesday, May 11 | 7–8 pm
Hear a conversation between Yongseok Jeon of
South Korea’s artist collective flyingCity, featured in
“Megacities Asia,” and Lucas Cowan, public art
curator of the Rose Kennedy Greenway Conservancy,
about the issues of modern urban living and creativity,
and the human consequences of gentrification and
development. Join us as we bring Jeon’s experience
as an artist and social commentator in Seoul to look
at how local skills and knowledge can be applied in
an increasingly standardized and globalized world.
Every Wednesday Free admission for all starting at 4 pm (voluntary
contributions welcome). Spend time in the galleries
and enjoy a variety of free drop-in programs
starting at 6 pm.

Explore the fascinating world of paper cut collage
with preeminent artist, Wu Jian’an, as he creates
a paper collage self-portrait at the MFA. He first
creates several different drawings and cuts out
the brushstrokes from the drawings, reassembling
them to form a dramatic new image. Drawing
inspiration from traditional mythology and
contemporary references, his unique style makes
him a standout in the contemporary art world.
His work has been exhibited in Europe, Asia,
Australia, and North America.

This exhibition features monumental sculptures
and installations by contemporary artists that
represent the unique urban environments of Beijing,
Shanghai, Mumbai, Delhi, and Seoul. The artists—
some well known, others emerging—respond to
the unprecedented scale and pace of 21st-century
South and East Asian urban life.
