Go Figure! Ice skating is a popular tradition in Minnesota. It is in the optimistic nature of northlanders to say, “when life gives you ice, go skate on it!” Archaelogical records show primitive ice skates in Europe as far back as 3,000 BC. They were merely animal bones sharpened and shaped to slide over ice. True ice skating on metal blades with edges dates back to the

13th-14th centuries on Dutch canals. Skaters would travel from village to village to communicate news. Hockey is a popular way to have fun on ice. Indoor and outdoor rinks will be filled with hockey players honing their skills all winter. Recreational figure skating also offers hours of fun for families to get outdoors and play together. In 1908, figure skating became the first winter sport in the Olympics. In 1913, Austrian Alois Lutz first performed the toe jump that is still used in competitions today. Cloquet offers great opportunities for us to practice this ancient winter activity. The new skating ribbon at Dunlap Island will open as weather allows for some fun on skates. More than four dozen pairs of donated skates are newly sharpened and waiting in the warming house to be borrowed. From tiny feet to full sized feet, there are skates for all! Be sure to bring the family and enjoy this newest city park feature with a great warming house and fire pit to take out the chill. Need lessons for the kids? Be sure to check out indoor skating lessons on page 17. Go figure---let’s keep this ancient activity alive and well on our brand new state-of-the-art skating ribbon---the only one north of the Twin Cities!

New!New!

Meet Jeff Ross, our Guitar Instructor!

“I’m a Cloquet native and lifelong music lover. Though my first instrument was the saxophone, it was when I received my first guitar at fourteen and playing rock music with my friends in our basements and garages that made me realize music is my passion. I studied Music Theory, Composition, and jazz at UMD with a focus on guitar. Since I’ve graduated I’ve had the pleasure of playing with rock and jazz groups around the area and playing musicals for the Underground, Renegade Theater Company, and Zenith City Horror. When I’m not teaching or playing guitar you might find me playing a game with a few pals or checking out a new movie or play. I’ve really enjoyed teaching the guitar and ukulele and helping people meet their musical goals. Community Ed has been a huge part of that, and for that I’m very grateful!”

A great chance to get out and have some much

needed “me time”!

Rustic Bent Willow ProjectDo you like the look of rustic furniture: a bent willow chair, a trellis in your garden, a garden bench, a rocking chair or log bed? You can build it yourself! The natural look of sticks and logs has allowed crafters to express themselves throughout history. You can find a bend, a twist, a burl, or a root which will make each piece a one of a kind creation.

Many projects can be completed in one day with a couple hours of instruction and a willingness to put in a good days work. It is best to have a partner that can help you hold the longer pieces, especially with the bent willow projects. The day of instruction for the class is an introduction to stick-rustic furniture making, a demonstration with some hands-on tool use and information on building materials. The time between classes will allow you to come up with a project and collect materials. The Saturday class will be spent building your project, under the guidance of instructor John Bajda, McGregor teacher. Two people may sign up and work together on one project. The instructor encourages this, as many large projects require two people so that one can hold the wood in place. If you build one project, you pay for one project. If you each build a project, you both pay. On instruction day, please bring a notebook and a pen.Instructor: John BajdaCHS - Room E202, Enter door #14Thu, Apr 11 | 6:15 – 8:15 pmSat, Apr 27 | 8 am – 3:30 pm$50
