FuturefortheAnnotationofDigitalObjectsOrganizer:Dr.YukHui,SimonWorthington,HybridPublishingLab,CentreforDigitalCultures,LeuphanaUniversityLneburgDate:12thMay(midday)13thMay(evening)Venue:CentreforDigitalCultures,Slztorstr.2135,21335Lneburg,2.FloorInthepastdecades,theproliferationofdigitalobjects,theemergenceofnewtechnologies,andtheglobalisationofculturalobjects,demandnewconceptualisationsandpracticesofannotation.Ontologies(formalontologies,webontologies)findtheirlimitstofullycontextualizethemodesofexistenceofdigitalobjects,sincemostofthemarestillderivedfromanarrowreflectionandwithoutconsideringthenatureofthedigital.Annotationfindsitsplace,notonlyinthesenseofassistinginformationprocessingandenhancingthesearchabilityofdigitalobjects(fortheobjectsthemselves,orintheobjects),butalsoasinteractionandconcretisationofrelationsbetweentheusersandtheobjectswithwhichtheyinteract.ThisrecallsusofwhattheancientcallScholia,acommentaryandannotationpracticewhichfinallyshapedthescholiastandalsothescholar.Annotationinthissenseislessaboutclassification,butcloselyrelatedtolearning,meaningthatonelearnsandconcretizeshisorherknowledgethroughannotatingorwriting.Withdigitaltechnologies,theconceptofannotationhastobetakenfurther,sinceitintroducessemantictechnologies,collaboration,sharing,recommendation.Howeverannotationiseithernottakenseriouslyorshadowedbymereinteraction,orslowlytakenoverbyautomationasinthecaseofGoogleandothersemantictechnologies.TheworkshopFuturefortheannotationofdigitalobjects,hostedbytheHybridPublishingLabisanattempttogatherresearchersfromdifferentdisciplines,andtolookintodifferentpracticesandtoolsthathavebeendevelopedandconcernswhichhaveyettoberesolved.
Thistwodaysworkshopisanoccasiontodiscussfurthercollaborationsamongresearchers.Wewillinviteinternationalresearcherswhoareworkinginthefieldtoparticipateinthisworkshop,tomapthecurrentstateofaffairsandtolookatdifferentapproachestoannotationofdigitalobjects.Thesecondaimoftheworkshopwillbetodiscussthechallengesaheadandtofigureoutanagendafordevelopmentandforcollaboration.

BobSteinhasbeenengagedwithelectronicpublishingfulltimesince1980,whenhespentayearresearchingandwritingapaperforEncyclopediaBritannica"EBandtheIntellectualToolsoftheFuture."In1984hefoundedTheCriterionCollection,acriticallyacclaimedseriesofdefinitivefilms,whichincludedthefirstsupplementarysectionsanddirectorcommentariesandintroducedtheletterboxformat.HealsofoundedTheVoyagerCompany,whichin1989publishedoneofthefirstcommercialCDROMs,theCDCompaniontoBeethoven'sNinthSymphony.In1992Voyagerpublishedthefirstelectronicbooks,includingDouglasAdams'HitchhikersGuidetotheGalaxyandMichaelCrichton'sJurassicPark.In2004TheMacarthurFoundationprovidedagenerousgrantwithwhichSteinfoundedtheInstitutefortheFutureoftheBook,asmallthink&dotankaimedatexploringandinfluencingtheevolutionofnewformsofintellectualexpression.In2005theInstitutepublishedthefirst"networkedbooks,"whichwereinstrumentalintherecognitionoftheimportantshifttosocialreadingandwritingasdiscoursemovesfromprintedpagestonetworkedscreens.Inlate2010Steinfoundedanewcompany,SocialBook,Inc.withtheambitiousgoalofbuildingthefirstviablepostprintpublishingplatform.ClaudiusTeodorescuisworkingas"InterfaceDeveloperforWebApplicationsintheDigitalHumanities"fortheClusterofExcellence"AsiaandEuropeinaGlobalContext"oftheUniversityofHeidelberg.Hehasmorethan10yearsofexperienceinworkingwithXMLtechnologies.Amongotheropensourceprojects,hedevelopedteian,whichisanwebbasedannotatorandlimitededitorforanyXMLvocabulary.TeianwasoriginallydevelopedfortheU.S.DepartmentofState,OfficeoftheHistorian,andreleasedasopensourceforthebenefitofcommunity.ItsdevelopmentwasfurtherfundedbytheUniversityofRichmond,USA.JohannesWilm,hasworkedwithLaTeXsemanticdocumentssincetheearly2000sandwasresponsiblefortypesettingofthenationalNorwegiananthropologystudentjournalforseveralyears.HeobtainedhisPhDinAnthropologyfromGoldsmithsCollege2013.HehasprogrammedPaginationJS(2012),whichallowsfortheconversionofHTMLdocumentsintoPDFsforprintusingCSStodefinethestyling.HeisalsocofoundedofFidusWriter(2012),whichisawebbasedsemanticeditorforacademicwritingpurposes.HeisalsomemberofW3CeditingtaskforceoneditingasanInvitedExpert(2014)andeditoroftheW3Cspecificationsrelatedtoediting(2015),aswellasmemberoftheW3CworkinggrouponCSS,representingVivliostyle(Japan),andeditoroftheW3Cspecificationofpagefloats(2015)SimonWorthingtonHehasbeenthecofounderoftheMutejournal,aswellasactedasitspublisherforovertwentyyears.Muteisaleadingjournalincriticalnetworkculturepublishingaswellasanpublishingtechnologyinnovator,adoptinganOpenAccesspolicyin2004,aswellaspublishingasprintondemandandmultiplatformsince2004,withover6,000journalarticlespublished.Worthington'sresearchintoscholarlypublishinginfrastructuresdatesfrom2000,whenhisworkwassupportedbytheSorosFoundationfundersoftheBudapestOpenAccessInitiativeagreementtodevelopaninternetbaseddistributiondatabaseofphysicalprintjournals.ThisworkhassincealsobeensupportedbytheTechnologyStrategiesBoardintheUK,formultiformatconversionanddevelopmentofmetadataintegritysoftware.In2006hefoundedMoreisMorepublishingdistributionnetworkfundedbyKennisland,Netherlands.MoreisMoreusedtravellersspareluggagecapacitytotransportpublicationstobookfairsinternationallyorganisedthroughawebportal.In2012WorthingtonjoinedTheHybridPublishingLab(HPL),anERDFscholarlypublishingresearchprojectatLeuphanaUniversity,Germany.AttheHPLhehasledtheHybridPublishingConsortiumprojecttosupportOpenSourceworkflows.AnexampleresearchoutcomehasbeenwiththeGermanpublisherMerveVerlagtolaunchedtheMervedigitalbacklistprogrammeattheFrankfurtBookFair,2014.ThenextphaseofthisgroundbreakingprojectisdeliveringcustomizedindividualbooksspecifiedbyreadersfromMerveinbothprintandelectronicmedia.

Inthepastfewyearsseveralattempstshavebenmadetoaddannotationtotheweb,themostwellknownofwhichisprobablyHypothes.iswhichallowsfortheannotationofanywebsite.Suchannotationsystemsworkwellforstaticcontentorcontentthatisonlychangingslightlyduetospellchecking,changingoflinks,etc.,butnotforcontentthatisstillintheprocessofbeingcreatedorthatischangingforotherreasons.InthispresentationIwillargueforwhyrobustannotationsystemsneedtobepartoftheeditorofthewebcontentandhowaspecificeditorviewcouldbecreatedtoallowforthosewhoonlyhaveaccesstothecreationandeditingofannotations.

Thechallengeforthecasestudyistwofold.Firsthowtointegratethemediausedintoacollectionmanagementsystem,suchaTamboti,usingmetadescriptionframeworkssuchasVRAandMODS.Secondhowtointroduceannotationsintothesysteminaninteroperable,transportablemanner.

Writingandreadingaroseasamechanismtomoveinformationandideasacrosstimeandspace.Beforetheirinventionandallthewayuptotheemergenceofprint,readingwasabehaviorthattookplaceinrealtimeingroupsWiththeperfectionoftheprintingpressinthefifteenthcentury,thesocialpurposeofwritingandreadingrecededfurtherandfurtherintothebackgroundsuchthattheybecameknownasthemostprivateofbehaviors.Intheeraofthedigitalnetwork,wearegoingbacktothefutureasreadingandwritingonceagainappearassocialactivitiesandgaintremendouspowerintheprocess.
