PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Feedback for Improved Learning Outcomes
The research is clear: improving feedback practices can significantly improve student learning and the
quality of teaching in classrooms. Staff at Lucknow are learning how to improve the feedback they give
students about their learning. Effective feedback practices provide the bridge between assessment and
learning. High quality feedback can improve student learning by as much as eight months.
Teaching and learning activities, including formative and summative assessments, provide
opportunities for teachers to gather evidence about students’ progress. This informs teacher feedback
to students about their learning and what they need to do next to move forward. The evidence also
provides feedback to teachers, allowing them to evaluate and, if necessary, adapt or change strategies
to ensure they are meeting the learning needs of their students
The research defines feedback as information:
• for the learner and teacher about the learner’s performance
• about performance relative to learning goals
• based on evidence of learning
• from the teacher, the student or peers
• leading to changes in teacher and student behaviour.
There is wide agreement about the intent of feedback. Effective feedback is designed to achieve
improvement in student learning, continuously driving a student’s current performance towards a
current learning goal.

The Importance of Regular Home Reading
Parents are a child’s first teacher and parents teach children many important skills, including how to
speak. Your child will experience the most success in reading when school and home work together.
Children learn about the importance of reading as they watch family members use reading and writing
for everyday purposes. Reading for pleasure, sharing a story with your child, using a recipe or reading
street signs teaches them that reading is a useful skill in today’s world. Reading with your child at
home will help your child in all areas of school. Research shows the importance of reading on a daily
basis in developing their use and understanding of vocabulary.
Here are some other strategies that parents and carers can make use of when reading with a child at
home.
Pre-reading strategies: Look at the title and available pictures with your child and discuss what you
think the story may be about.
Question, question, question: Stop reading at regular intervals and ask your child questions about
what has been read so far and what he/she thinks may happen next in the text.
Context clues: Based on the surrounding text and what had happened previously in the story,
encourage your child to guess what he/she thinks the word may be.
Help from pictures: Encourage your child to take notice of the pictures as they may help him/her to
identify an unknown word. Don’t cover up pictures as they read.
Memory: Persuade your child to use his/her memory to recall previous elements of the story that may
give him/her the meaning of the unfamiliar word.
Coherent reading: Remind your child that what he/she has read must make sense, so look at the
word he/she has used to determine whether or not the story still makes sense.
Paraphrase: Try telling your child part of the story using different words to what is written so that he/
she gains an understanding of the text for when he/she attempts to read it.
Punctuation: You may need to explain to your older child what the various punctuation marks mean
so that he/she is able to pause, stop and use appropriate reading strategies at the right time.
Punctuation includes the full stop (.), the comma (,), the question mark (?), the exclamation mark (!),
apostrophes (’) and inverted commas (“ ”). Although rare in beginner reader books, you may need to
identify the colon (:) and semi-colon (;)
What’s really important is encouraging children to develop a love of books so they are interested and
keen to start reading.

OPEN WATER LEARNING EXPERIENCE
Congratulations to all grade 5 and 6 children who attended the OWLE at the Paynesville Esplanade on
Tuesday the 19th of February. The weather was certainly not favourable for a day at the beach,
however, the behaviour and enthusiasm of all children involved was outstanding and it was an
extremely educational day.
The children participated in 5 activities including -:
• Be Aware and Be Prepared:
Children discussed how to keep safe when in and around water, particularly open water environments.
Practical strategies were delivered, such as identifying dangers (i.e. rip currents) and reading key
safety signs, to ensure they had the tools to ‘be aware and be prepared’ before visiting their local
waterway.
• Everyday Lifesaver:
Children were given the skills and opportunity to be ‘Everyday Lifesavers’ with a variety of age-
appropriate and engaging real life scenarios. They also learnt the emergency response sequence,
DRSABCD.
• Survival Strategies:
Children learnt vital survival strategies that they could use if they found themselves in trouble in the
water. Wearing a lifejacket, and practising important survival techniques including the huddle, the
HELP position, as well as entering and exiting the water safely.
• Rescue Strategies:
Rescue tubes, towels, ropes and even bike helmets, are all examples of rescue items children had an
opportunity to practice using, which will enable them to make informed decisions if ever they are
required to perform a rescue.
• Safe Body Boarding:
Body Boards are a popular activity enjoyed by many children in open waterways. Children learnt key
skills needed to stay safe, including safety equipment and how to paddle effectively.
Later in the year the grade 5 and 6 children will be involved in a further 2-3 day program as part of
their Open Water Learning Experience.
We look forward to this extremely worthwhile program continuing in our school.

AFL FOOTBALL CLINIC
Yesterday, a handful of Lucknow students had the opportunity to participate in the AFL Super Clinic at
the Bairnsdale Football oval with some of the stars and upcoming players of the Hawthorn Football
club. The students received some hot tips to fine tune their football skills, while also finding out about
the life of a footballer and what it takes to get to the top level through a question and answer session.
Having athletes attend our region to participate in these clinics provides a wonderful opportunity and
inspiration for our students about the dedication it takes to get to the top of any profession. Great to
see the students participating and giving it their all.
