June 2015

Dear Lucketts Families: As we end the school year, we continue with instruction and testing. There are also many fun activities planned during the school day and after school hours. We start with our Spring Chorus Concert, scheduled for June 3rd and then Field Day, June 5th. We hope that, even if you are not volunteering at Field Day, you will join us for the Volunteer Breakfast on June 5th beginning at 7:30. So many of you have been here volun-teering this year, and we could not do what we do for students without you. This breakfast is our way of saying “thank you” for all you’ve done for us over the year. Our PTA is planning an ice cream party on Sunday, June 14th from 2-4 pm here in the back of the school. Please make sure to RSVP so that they have enough ice cream! The 5th graders’ promotion ceremony is set for June 15th at 6:30pm. Our last day of school is June 16th. It is a full day and it will be here before we know it. Thank you for continuing to send your children to school each day, well rested. The anxiety toward the end of the school year is lessened as we continue with the routines as much as possible. As we enter the summer months, our office hours will change just a bit. We will have someone in the office from 8:30 – 3:30, Monday through Friday beginning June 17th. Please check the website for updates and call ahead if you need to see someone here at school on a specific day. Speaking of summer, if your child was recommended for sum-mer school, you may need to register him/her in order to attend. Please contact your child’s teacher if you have questions about this. Thank you! Whether or not your child is attending summer school, please continue to read, read, read! Your children learn from listening to you read to them; they learn from the model you provide as you read for pleasure or read to learn new information. If you have questions about how to help your child maintain their skills over the summer, please contact your child’s teacher. This summer brings opportunity to get involved in our school. If you are new to Lucketts, or have yet to participate, please con-tact our PTA board. There are many ways to get involved and the more parents we have involved, the more we can do for our students. Thank you in advance and I look forward to seeing you this summer! Have a wonderful, relaxing summer!

Lucketts Absentee Email [email protected]

We have established an absentee email address to receive infor-

mation regarding student absences. Parents find the email absentee address to be very convenient to use. If your child is going to be

absent you may want to send an email to [email protected] to notify the school of the absence.

Parent Loot

What is Parent Loot? Parent Loot can be given by you to your child/children when he/she shows respect and responsibility in a daily en-vironment at home. For example: Your child cleans his or her room without being reminded, you might want to recognize the responsibil-ity that was shown by your child by giving your child parent loot. We are confident that you can think of many examples of respect and responsibility that could be recognized/reinforced by giving Parent Loot. Parent Loot can also be downloaded from our Lucketts Elemen-tary School Website inset link to the website.

Library News

As the end of the school year approaches, it is time to start getting all of the books back to their home in the Lucketts Library. Students were able to borrow books for the last time during the school week of May 26-29. All library books are due to the library by Thursday, June 4th (please have your students return their books to the library on their regularly scheduled library day during the week of June 1-4, if possible). Mrs. Varachi will send home notices on Friday, June 5th to all students who still have Lucketts library books in their posses-sion. Please make every effort to locate these books before you pay for them. Missing books often turn up as the classroom is tidied up for the end of the year. If you still cannot locate missing books after a thorough search, please send cash or a check (made out to Lucketts Elementary) to cover the cost of replacing the book. The replace-ment cost will be listed on the overdue notices. Even though book borrowing is coming to an end, that doesn’t mean that the library is closing! Students will still be able to use books from the library while at school for projects or other classroom assign-ments. Learning is still happening in the library as well. Here is a look at what each grade level is working on: K: Reading fiction and nonfiction about Kenya and Japan, end of the year review 1: Author study of Tomie DePaola 2: Research basics (working together as a class to find information about an animal) 3: Completing Famous American research project and introducing encyclopedias 4: Group research project about famous Virginians

5: In-depth study of poetry (we have read and analyzed poems by

Walt Whitman, Robert Frost, Langston Hughes, and others)

Music

What’s happening at Lucketts: 5th Grade Promotion Ceremony June 15, 2015 Thank you for welcoming me to the Lucketts family this year! I have had a great time getting to know your students and can’t wait to watch them grow! During the last couple weeks of school we will be playing instruments, singing, and playing games in all grade levels to show-off the different skills we have been learning all year. I am con-tinually impressed with each individual child’s musical talent. If you are interested in fostering your child’s love for music over the sum-mer, here are some websites that can help: For reading the notes on the staff: http://www.teachingideas.co.uk/music/namethatnote.htm For learning about the instrument families: http://listeningadventures.carnegiehall.org/ypgto/game.aspx For creating your own beatbox rhythms: www.incredibox.com For creating music online: www.soundation.com And a great app for composing music (works on i-devices and mac computers only): Garage Band

Nurse’s Notes

Dear Parent/Guardian of Rising Sixth Graders, The Commonwealth of Virginia requires that all students entering middle school and high school must have received a diphtheria, teta-nus, pertussis (Tdap) vaccine booster unless the student has re-ceived a Tdap vaccine after the age of seven years. Only one dose of the Tdap booster is required after the age of seven years, regardless of the interval since the last dose of pertussis-containing vaccine. Please note that Tdap is a different vaccine than the DTaP vaccine.

Immunizations may be obtained from your physician, military clinics, or the Loudoun County Health Department. The Loudoun County Health Department will provide the immunizations that are required for school attendance at no cost. The Health Department is located in the Shenandoah Building at 102 Heritage Way, N.E., Suite 100, Leesburg, (phone number: 703-777-0236). Immunizations are ad-ministered by appointment. If you choose to go to the Health De-partment for this immunization, you must bring a current immuniza-tion record. For rising sixth graders, documentation of the Tdap vaccine booster should be given to the nurse or health clinic specialist at your child’s elementary school this school year. If your child will not receive the Tdap vaccine booster before the end of this school year, documenta-tion should be given to the middle school or high school this summer. Your child will not be allowed to start school without this im-munization or a medical exemption. A list of students who re-quire this immunization will be provided to each middle school at the end of this school year. There will be no grace period for your child to begin middle school on August 31, 2015, without this vaccine.

All new seventh, eighth, ninth, tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grade stu-dents will be required to have documentation of a Tdap vaccine booster prior to the start of school year 2015-2016. Students must have documentation of this immunization in order to begin school on August 31, 2015. There will be no grace period for your child to begin school on August 31 without this vaccine.

If you have questions, please contact your child’s physician or the local health department.
