LCC Parents Association needs you!
Lucan Community College
Parent’s Association, need
volunteers and free expertise
to help fundraise. This can be
by giving any form of once off
help or a donation of time.
The Parents Association will
hold their first meeting on the
new school year in September.
Please make the effort to
come along – the Parents As-
sociation only works if parents
get involved.
If you have never been to a
meeting make this your first!
As we enter the traditional summer months and
enjoy the long days and hopefully warm temper-
atures, I would like to wish you all happy family
time together this summer. Over the last year we
remember the wonderful performances of our TY
students in Fiddler on the Roof and the many
competitions, fundraising and charity events our
students engaged in. We had many sporting suc-
cesses with hurling, boys soccer and girls soccer.
We also had success in debating, Amnesty and
quiz events. I would like to congratulate all stu-
dents involved in the extra-curricular programme
of the college and to thank every single staff
member who gives of their time for the benefit of
the students. This is the backbone of Lucan Com-
munity College and is what makes being a stu-
dent in our college truly something special. Our
Parents Association continue to work for the im-
provement of resources and facilities for our stu-
dents. We are hugely appreciative of the work
done by a small but committed group of parents
and we encourage more parents to get involved.
If you have not yet been involved please do so as
any time that you can spend on your son/
daughter's education is an investment in their
future. State examinations have just been com-
pleted and we know that our Leaving Certificate,
LCA and Junior Certificate students have put
huge efforts into their studies. The exam supervi-
sors commented on the politeness and studious
nature of our students, yet another reason to be
proud of them as amazing young people.
Reports for 1st, 2nd, TY and 5th year students
have just been posted along with booklists, uni-
form lists and other important information for
all continuing students. Thank you for returning
your re-enrolment and data protection forms.
We will now start the process of offering availa-
ble places to transfer applicants. If you have not
yet sent in the re-enrolment form please do so
immediately. The Department of Education has
recognised the need for more teachers to be
involved in the leadership and management role
in schools and approved the appointment of an
additional Deputy Principal for our school re-
cently. We congratulate Ms. Aisling Kirwan who
was recently appointed to the position of Depu-
ty Principal in our college and will take up her
new position with us in August. We look forward
to working with her and wish her every success
in her new post with us. Finally, thank you to
everyone who contributed to our successful
year. Our students, teachers, parents, admin
staff, SNAs, cleaners, caretaker and Board of
Management all play an important part in the
success of our school. We appreciate your con-
tinued support as parent/
guardians and wish you all a fun,
safe and relaxing summer.
Diane Birnie
Greetings from Lucan Commu-
nity College! What an eventful
term we have had. Well done
to everyone in our college for
making this academic year a
success. As you read this news-
letter you will find out the
many wonderful events that
took place since our last news-
letter at Easter. Wow! Many
trophies and awards have en-
tered our school but it is not
only about awards. It is all
about getting an all rounded
education. You have been
wonderful ambassadors on the
various trips and excursions
within Ireland and abroad. You
are a credit to your parents
and teachers.
We hope you enjoy the read!
Thank you to all of our teachers who continue to give up their time to engage students
outside of the school curriculum. As a school we place the highest value on the crucial
role that extra-curricular activities play in developing our students as young people and
appreciate the efforts by teachers that go into providing such a broad and varied pro-
gramme. If students are not currently involved we urge you as parents to encourage
them as participation in any part of such a varied programme can richly add to student’s
personal development. Such benefits to students include self-confidence, academic per-
formance, energy levels, communication skills and social skills.
Lucan Community College
Over the last few weeks the LLN
committee has been running an
e x c i t i n g
new word challenge competitio
n.
Students were asked to use a
code to find a word that equals
100 euro or to find the most
expensive word.
The competition was hugely
popular amongst each year
group and the standard of en-
tries was simply outstanding.
Among the great entries were
Ellie Sisk (1st year) who won
w i t h h e r e n t r y
of pneumonoultramicroscopic
silicovolcanokoniosis which is
a type of lung disease. David
Wright (2nd year) found the
longest word in English which
is “Titin” the protein.
Oisín O’Sullivan (5th year) clev-
erly used the German word
f o r 2 2 2 , 2 2 2 w h i c h -

dzwanzig. Finally, Dylan Wright
scooped the prize for the most
ironic of entries with hippo-
potomonstrosesquippedaliop

words.

Chris Brady (1st year), Robert
Pal (3rd year), Joey Fitzgerald
(4th year), Samuel Fay (5th

SCHOOL UNIFORM 2018/2019 Uniform, in general, was re-
ported by tutors to be very
good this year. However, as we
approach a new school year
students need to be reminded
about wearing the appropriate
uniform, including socks and
shoes. Socks for boys should
be grey and must not be either
ankle or invisible socks.
Black shoes, either leather or
leatherette (fake leather),
must be worn everyday by stu-
dents as part of the school
uniform. The shoe must be
completely black – this includes
the sole, upper and laces. No
visible logo is allowed on the
shoe. The nature of our school
building and Irish weather ne-
cessitates this rule.
The following shoes are not
permitted:
Canvas runner shoes
(Converse, Vans, etc)
Fabric runners of any
kind (Nike, Adidas, etc)
Shoes/runners with
lighter colour or white
soles)
Boots of any kind
Students’ uniform will be
checked by their tutor and
class teachers each day and
logged on VSWare. Students
who are missing any piece of
their uniform must have a note
from their parents. Repeated
infringements of our uniform
code will be followed up ac-
cording to our Code of Behav-
iour and will result in sanctions

Fiddler on the Roof: What a fantastic production!
The show was a huge success
and played to a sold out
crowd each of the evenings.
It was such a feat to pull off
this intricate production in-
volving so many performers
on stage at any one time. To
say this was a professional
show is an understatement!
Well done to all the students
involved – by the crowd reac-
tion many of you have a ca-
reer on the stage ahead of
you.
A special thank you to Mr.
John O’Connor and Mr. Duffy
who worked so hard with the
students for the last year en-
suring that the students were
ready to go for their three
night run.
SCIENCE NEWS
On Friday the 4th of May, a
group of first and second
year students travelled to IT
Tallaght to take part in
Scifest 2018. The Scifest fair
consisted of a competition
and exhibition of projects, a
prize-giving ceremony
and two science talks to
stimulate interest in STEM.
It also afforded students
the opportunity to visit a
third-level college, view the
facilities and get infor-
mation on some of the
STEM courses on offer. We
are very proud of all stu-
dents who participated and
represented the school.
'One group of students
fought off stiff competition
to win 2nd place in the
overall Physics category for
their investigation into
comparing the effective-
ness of takeaway versus
reusable cups.'
The students in this group
were Meabh Egan, Conor
Roche and Christine Oka-
kpu. Well done to all who
took part, it was a worthy
experience and will help
students going orward with
their CBA in second year.
Thanks to your teachers,
Clare Healy, Maura Gaffney
and Nicola Walsh for all
their support and hard
work.

THIRD YEAR NEWS
We wish all of our junior Cert stu-
dents sitting exams the very best of
luck.
We would also like to remind pupils
of the importance of being in school
in plenty of time before your tests,
staying for the full duration of each
exam and to double check you have
all equipment necessary for each
test. Good luck.
Options classes for TY have been
outlined to our pupils and we look
forward to an enjoyable year next
year. Have a great summer.
TRANSITION YEAR NEWS
Another Transition Year has come to
a close. Our theme this year was
Seize the Day and our students in
Transition Year took this theme to
heart as they threw themselves into
every opportunity that came their
way. A massive thank you to all of
our staff for the imaginative and
varied programme on offer – Transi-
tion Year would not be such an
amazing experience for our students
if it was not for all of your creativity
and passion for what you do.
Transition Year Interviews took place
on Friday May 18th for all our TY
students. There were some amazing-
ly creatively designed portfolio box-
es.
This was followed by their gradua-
tion evening on May 22nd. This was
our chance as a school community to
celebrate their success with their
parents and families. The night saw
students awarded with many certifi-
cates, awards and medals. This belied
their involvement in so many of the
events and activities on offer. We
also presented each student with
their Transition Year Graduation cer-
tificates alongside their Junior Cycle
Profile of Achievement (JCPA). The
students themselves spoke passion-
ately to the gathered audience of
their experiences of Transition Year.
It was such a wonderful occasion for
all involved. As your Year Head, Ty
Coordinator and tutor, we are so
proud of each and every one of you.
SIXTH YEAR NEWS
Where have the last six years gone to? It has been the
quickest time ever. Since you began in 2012 it has been a
busy time indeed. You have all matured and grown into
fine young ladies and gentlemen.
Your recent graduation evening was a beautiful evening of
celebration. We were all so proud of you. Well done to
each and every one of you on completing six year of edu-
cation here in our college.
We wish you all the best as you start your Leaving Certifi-
cate exams on Wednesday 6th June. Keep cool, calm and
collected. Make sure to be on time for each of your exams.
Do not write in pencil!! Answer all questions and just do
the very best you can. Bonne Chance! Viel Glück! Go neiri
an bothar libh!
SECOND YEAR NEWS
We have had a busy year ending
with your in-house exams. This
year has been important as a lot
of work was covered as part of
your Junior Cycle.
We hope you return after your
holidays feeling refreshed and
ready to work hard. You will
have practical exams and written
so it is important to meet your
deadlines on time and not leave
things to the last minute.
Thanks for all your hard work in
school and your involvement in
extra-curricular activities
throughout the year. Have a
wonderful summer.
FIRST YEAR NEWS
Hard to believe you are all after
completing your first year in
Lucan CC. It has been a pleas-
ure working with you. It took
many of you time to settle in
especially in relation to your
organisational skills. You now
come prepared for class and
most of you are in a good rou-
tine in relation to your work
ethic.
Well done to those of you who
were involved in extra-
curricular activities. It is a great
way of meeting new friends
and enjoying something differ-
ent. For those of you who did-
n’t get involved there is plenty
of time. In second year you can
choose something from the
extra-curricular list and join in.
We look forward to our second
year trip to Italy next year. If
you are going please make
sure you have paid the due
amount.

YEAR GROUP NEWS
The Geography students in
Transition Year undertook their
field study of a marine environ-
ment in Donabate on what
should have been a sunny May
day.
The students were amazingly
enthusiastic as they battled the
unseasonal May weather to rec-
ord various data that measures
whether coastal deposition is
occurring along the stretch of
North Dublin coastline.
A huge thank you to Ms. Quirke,
Ms. Murphy and Ms. Bean and
Mr. Morris for organizing the
students and the educational
trip.

GERMAN LANGUAGE NEWS: Congratulations to Karolina
Strazadolova on being suc-
cessful in receiving a schol-
arship to Germany. Allan
Murphy, a past pupil con-
tacted Ms Clarke, his former
German teacher, to see if it
was possible to give a fifth
year German student the
opportunity to spend time
in Germany to practice their
German but also to gain
some work experience, all
expenses paid. A very gen-
erous act. Allan is now liv-
ing in Hamburg, is married
to a German girl and they
have a daughter. Allan al-
ways had an interest in the
German language and cul-
ture. He had also been in-
volved in our German ex-
change and he wanted to
give something back to the
school. This is a wonderful
opportunity, thanks to Allan
and his family.
Karolina will travel to Ham-
burg during the summer and
spend three weeks living
with Allan’s family and get-
ting work experience at the
same time. It is a wonderful
opportunity to speak Ger-
man and experience the Ger-
man culture and life style.
Thanks Allan and we wish
Karolina a ‘gute Reise’. Enjoy
your time in Hamburg. Speak

Two of our local TD's Gino
Kenny and Eoin O Broin, pre-
sented the 701 petitions to
Minister for Housing Eoghan
Murphy at Housing Commit-
tee Meeting on Thurs-
day May 17th.
Ibrahim Halawa also attended
the event to support our
homeless campaign. He spoke
to the students about his expe-
rience being unlawfully impris-
oned in Egypt and his cam-
paigning for an end to home-
lessness.
We expressed our views to the
TD's and Councillors asking
them to address the humani-
tarian crisis that is Irish home-
lessness, by building more so-
cial housing and providing
more hostel places. “There is
too much talking about the
issue and not enough ac-
tion”said Lucy, 5th year stu-
dent. “It’s not the problem of
the people, but the problem
of the government’s inability
to handle a crisis.” Gayatri,
5th year Student.
When people think of home-
lessness they often don't think
of the more hidden forms of
homelessness. People often
think homelessness is just
sleeping rough and don't think
of families living in emergency
accommodation, hubs and
hotels, people couch surfing,
people living in unsafe envi-
ronments, people in direct pro-
vision centres, people sleeping
in hospitals, cars and B&Bs. It is
easy to forget about what they
can't see, but these people
suffer like any other homeless
person and are a victim of a
neglectful government and
state who do not protect one
of the most basic human
rights, our rights to housing.
In 2015, the first year of our LCC Sleep Out, there were 3,625 people
homeless and as of March this year 2018, there are 9,681 homeless
people recorded in Ireland.
Between July 2014 and February 2018 the number of people record-
ed as homeless has increased by a shocking 129%, or 6,549 people.
(Peter McVerry Trust)
Even with the government’s promises of building more houses and
social houses, the number of families becoming homeless has in-
creased by over 37% since February 2017. (Focus Ireland) In March
2018, there were 3,646 children in emergency homeless accommo-
dation with their families. " I should never have sat in a hotel for 3
months, surrounded by tourists staring at me in my school uni-
form, waiting for a county council to decide they cared about
me" -said a student.
We invited TDs from our con-
stituency and relevant Dáil posi-
tions, local Councillors and the
Lord Mayor of South Dublin
County Council to attend the
“Sleep Out”.Mayor Paul Gogarty,
Councillor Ruth Nolan, Council-
lor Guss O'Connell, TD Gino
Kenny attended our event on
Friday and gave their insight
and solutions for the homeless
crisis. We presented Gino with
our box of 701 petitions signed
by students and staff. On Mon-
day 14th of May TD Eoin O'Bro-
in came to our school at lunch
to discuss the homeless crisis
and hear our views.
On Friday May 11th, the Amnes-
ty International group in Lucan
Community College held
our "Annual 12 hour Spon-
sored Sleep Out" for the fourth
time, to raise awareness about
the current homeless crisis in
Ireland.
It was a great success being our
biggest year yet with 34 stu-
dents, 5 teachers and 4 local
councillors and TD’S along with
Ibrahim Halawa attending.
Well done to our TY students
who took part in the
tour guiding com-
petition.
It was fantastic to hear you
talk about the famous peo-
ple who are buried in this
cemetery.

A Makeup Masterclass will be
held on June 17th in Finns-
town Castle, Lucan as a fund-
raiser for Gluais. Gluais is a
voluntary youth leadership
programme that prepares
students to work together as
a team and become role
models for other students in
the school.
Tickets are €20 per person
and includes 4 hours of
demonstrations, entry to a
raffle and a special goodie
bag on the day.
The Makeup Masterclass
fundraiser will hopefully go
some way to enable approxi-
mately 30 adults to train 60
students over 5 days of lead-
ership training.
Gluais has been a hugely
successful part of our extra-
curricular programme in Lu-
can CC over the years and we
have seen at first hand the
benefit it has, not just for
those participating but for
the wider school community.
