Lubrication and Allied Oils

by ELLIOTT A. EVANS, fourth edn., Chapman & Hall Ltd., London, 1963; 27 x ‘4 cm; 17 chap- ters, 234 pp., figs., tables, refs.; price: 30s.

The first edition of this book was published more than forty years ago. The author draws on a lifetimes’ experience in this volume, and readers will enjoy the skilful intertwining of past history with the present art of lubricant testing.

An introduction is given to the chemistry of lubricants and to some recent concepts of friction and wear. Factors which must be considered in the selection of lubricants are enumerated, but this short chapter is scarcely sufficient to be a guide for engineers. The remainder of the book deals essentially with physical, chemical and technological testing. Much can be learned from the authors’ experience on the pitfalls in performing such tests as well as on their usefulness and limitations.

Numerous examples of the application of “allied oils” in industry are given and make interesting reading. Literature references are somewhat fortuitous. A list of well-known texts, where most of these topics are treated in greater detail, could usefully be added to the next edition.

Rhenium

edited by B. W. GONSER; Papers presented at the Symposion on Rhenium of the Electrothermics and Metallurgy Division of the Electrochemical Society, May 1960, in Chicago; Elsevier Publ. Co., Amsterdam, 1962; 16 x 24 cm; 225 pp., 115 ill., 59 tables; price: for.

Rhenium has not yet found wide application, but interest in the metal has grown steadily during the last few years. Like tungsten and tantalum it has a very high melting-point, and is also of interest for application in alloys. The papers cover a wide field, and deal with extraction of the metal, analytical methods and properties, and the manufacture and application of rhenium alloys. The book is a valuable addition to the literature of the less-common metals, and can be strongly recommended to interested readers.
