WHY LUBRICATE?

• Minimize Wear• Separate moving surfaces

• through a suitable lubricant film• mainly during start-up

• Avoid metal to metal contact• Minimize Friction• Sealing

• Filling the gaps between • pistons and liners • piston rings and piston grooves• vanes and pump case

HOW A LUBRICANT WORKS

• Petroleum-based products are ideal choices as lubricants due to their ability to wet metal surfaces

• Lubricant is able to get in between two metal surfaces and form a barrier

• Viscosity is key measure of lubricant effectiveness

• The measurement of a fluid’s resistance to flow

• Viscosity is dependent on temperature and pressure

NOTES Describe the visual:�Equal quantities of three oils of different viscosities�Each poured for the same period of time. Note that the light oil pours the fastest, the medium a little slower, and the heavy even more slowly. In the lab, viscosity is measured by timing the flow of a fixed volume of oil at a standard temperature through a standard orifice. HOW A LUBRICANT WORKS

• High viscosity good for:• High temperatures• High loads• Low speed rotation

• Low viscosity better for:• Low temperatures• High speed rotation

• The less viscosity variation with temperature, the greater the Viscosity Index (VI)

• High VI - little variation good• Low VI - lots of variation bad

VISCOSITY INDEX IMPROVERS

• Polymers are added to lubes to increase VI• At low temperature they form balls allowing

improved flow• At higher temperatures they inter-twine and

decrease flow• Polymer chains can be broken in areas of

high shear, e.g. in bearings which results in drop of VI and viscosity

• There are four major lubrication modes, or regimes:

• Boundary• Mixed• Hydrodynamic• Elasto-hydrodynamic (EHL)

• Increasing film thickness

MOBIL DTE OILS ARE HIGH QUALITY TURBINE GRADE OILS WHICH HAVE HIGH RESISTANCE TO OXIDATION AND RUST. THESE TYPE OILS HAVE THE BEAT OIL WATER SEPARATION CHARACTERISTICS AS THEY WERE DESIGNED FOR STEAM PLANTS. WHEN OIL IS NOT IN CIRCULATION, THE WATER WILL FALL OUT OF SOLUTION AND END UP IN THE LOWEST POINT IN THE SYSTEM. Gas turbine oil. Most orders will be for the Mobil Jet Oil II. ExxonMobil indicates that this product is pretty much worldwide, that said, Mobil Jet 254 is the latest version of Gas Turbine Oil and is used to prevent lacquer and oxidation buildup on bearing surfaces, thus causing accelerated bearing wear.
