HUB
• Hubs are used to connect multiple computers together
• Broadcast same message on all ports (less secure)
• This device would be used for:
• Creating a private network
• Transferring data to another computer
• Decent 8 port hubs range from $49.99 to $90.00

Hub Diagram

Switch • A switch is better than a hub by: (layer 2 device)
• Only sending a message to the device that requested it
• Also allow fiber connection link
• Send Info faster
• Switches are used in offices and homes for day to day work.
• Depending on the ports, switch could cost from $10 to $200

Router
• Routers allow computers to connect together and also allow for connection to the internet. Routers can be found with built in modems so you can get a 2 in 1 device.
• Routers can be found in any environment
• Wireless routers can cost between $20 to $200

Bridge
• A bridge works by creating a connection between two separate computer networks or the divide one network into two. Both networks use the same protocol.
• Principle function is to forward data based on the MAC address of the sending and receiving devices
• Device may be used when you have two networks and you want to be able to exchange information between the two
• Price range is $45 to $150
Bridge

Gateway
• A Gateway is used to connect two networks on different subnets (255.255.0.0)
• These are mostly used in corporations with large networks that need to join their different subnets together
• Range from $40 to $1000

Firewall
• A firewall blocks packets from entering your network
• Rules must be set to drop packets that are not allowed in
• Example “adapter A ip src addr 192.168.1.147 dst addr any tcp src port 20 dst port 80”
• Firewalls are usually built into some routers so households will have them. Dedicated hardware firewalls will be found in corporations
• Price range is $120 to $5000+

Wireless AP
• Wireless AP plug into a switch/hub and broadcast wireless signal to wireless devices
• AP’s need to be configured properly (security wise) to prevent unauthorized access
• You can find AP in a lot of businesses that offer free Wi-Fi and homes will have them. Typically routers will offer built in Wi-Fi so an AP will not be needed
• Price range is $20 to $200
