LTB E – SF6 circuit breaker with Auto-Puffer TM foroutdoor installation

LTB E is an outdoor SF6 circuit breaker designed forsystem voltages in the range of 245 to 550 kV andfor rated short-circuit currents up to 50 kA. Thedesign incorporates an advanced Auto-PufferTM

interrupter based on the latest developments in arctechnology and dielectrics.

The energy required for interrupting short circuitcurrents is partly drawn from the arc itself, therebyreducing the energy required for the operatingmechanism by more than 50 percent as comparedwith a conventional SF6 puffer type circuit breaker.

The low energy requirements result in a designoptimised for low operating forces which in turnresults in higher reliability.

All single pole operated circuit breakers areequipped with one operating mechanism per pole.Circuit breakers with one breaking unit per polecan be operated with one operating mechanismper breaker.

The LTB E circuit breaker complies with theinternational standards IEC and ANSI.

n Restrike-free interruption of capacitive currentsdue to optimised ‘contact’ design andmovement

n Optimum quenching at zero current ensureslow over-voltages during switching ofinductive currents

n Protection from gas leakage by double X-ringsin dynamic seals and double O-rings in staticseals, tested in varying climatic conditions over30 years of field operations. (SF6 gas loss lowerthan 1 percent / year.)

n Minimal maintenance and high reliability from:– separate current paths for continuous and

arcing currents– components optimised to withstand

electrical and mechanical stresses

Key features and advantages

n Optimised contact gap ensures high dielectricstrength even when the SF6 gas in the pole isat atmospheric pressure

n Low noise level due to low mechanical energyrequired for operation

n Pre-tested, pre-assembled units for easyinstallation

n Optimised pole and structure for high seismic‘withstand’ capability

n Synchronised switching with SwitchsyncTM

relay (optional)

n Supervisory control with condition monitoringequipment SwitchguardTM / SwitchcontrolTM

(optional)

DesignThe breaker pole constitutes a sealed unit, whichincludes one or two breaking unit(s), support andoperating insulators, as well as pole linkage housingwith tripping spring attachment. A filter forabsorbing moisture maintains quality of SF6 gas.

Operating mechanismThe circuit breaker is operated by a motor chargedspring operating mechanism, which is installed incompact splash-proof and corrosion resistanthousing.

n Three BLK 222 mechanisms are used for singlepole operation at 245 kV

n One BLG 1002A mechanism is used for threepole operation at 245 kV

n Three BLG 1002A mechanisms are used forsingle-pole operation at 420 kV

Page 4: LTB E CB Brochure

Testing and Quality Assurancen The circuit breakers are type tested as per

IEC standards

n For each circuit breaker

– Routine tests performed as per requiredIEC or ANSI standards

– Mechanical endurance tests performed for10,000 operations

– Routine test reports issued showing actualtest results

n The manufacturing facility is ISO 9001 certified, covering all aspects of production and testing toensure the highest quality standards

n The manufacturing facility is also EHS certifiedfor Environment and Occupational Health andSafety Management Systems (OHSMS)

Transportation and erectionn The LTB E circuit breaker poles are

transported as complete units filled with SF6

gas to a slight overpressure. Circuit breakerpoles with two breaking units per phase aresupplied as two separate units: breaker-headand support insulator

n Erection work at site can be done within a day

n SF6 gas should be filled to specified workingpressure by the following equipment:– One special control valve for connection to

the SF6 gas bottle and a gas-filled hosewith connectors

n Gas filling can be done without SF6 gas beingreleased into the atmosphere. No gas treatmentis necessary before gas filling
