The governance committee works year-round to assist the board to

institutionalize effective governance.

How can a GOVERNANCE COMMITTEE assist in LSC Leadership?

RECRUITING and BOARD OF DIRECTOR SUCCESSION PLANNING

GOVERNANCE COMMITTEE TASKS

• Identify skills and areas of expertise needed by the board.

• Actively seek out, cultivate and recruit board prospects, encouraging all board members to contribute ideas and

connections• Recommend individuals for election or prepare a slate of

candidates, as mandated by the bylaws.

• Provide a “governance moment” at each board meeting on a specific governance education topic.

BOARD OF DIRECTOR EDUCATION and TRAINING

• Provide orientation and mentoring for new board members, including an up to date board member handbook.

o USA Swimming LSC Leadership Course

• Conduct a transition meeting with outgoing and incoming board members working together to facilitate a smooth handoff.

• Promote ongoing learning and growth of all board members, actively encouraging development of leadership skills.

o Bring in outside speakers, consultants or facilitators for the board.

• Schedule and plan annual or semi-annual board retreat.

• Update the board at each meeting about Strategic Plan progress

• Act as “keepers of the strategic plan.

o Insure accountability in deadlines

o Assist board members in task completion

• Survey membership on topics of interest to the board

• Conduct nonpartisan assessment of board member participation and commitment.o Consider suitability for re-election.

• Assess board guiding documents, including policies and bylaws.

• Act as guardians of all board documents.
