LETTER Eastern Illinois University Lumpkin College of Business Spring 1990
Taking Care of Business Tops Goal Eastern's Taking Care of Business Capital Campaign to raise $500,000 surpassed its goal by $17,915, chaired by Roger Roberson ('64). Roberson launched the campaign in March 1989 by establishing a $50,000 scholarship endowment, and continued his enthusiastic support until the project was completed.
Dean Ted Ivarie said the campaign "took a combination of talent, commitment and hard work from alumni, business and friends" to surpass its goal. "We owe a great deal to the Steering Committee and the campaign's many donors. Their contributions will provide lasting, tangible evidence of dedication to pursuing excellence in Eastern's business programs. Students and staff are extremely grateful."
Contributions to the campaign will be used to purchase instructional equipment and office furnishings for a new $6.2 million facility that is being built to house the Lumpkin College of Business and to establish scholarships.
Judy Hofstrand, Director of Administration and Development for Lhe College, said that more than 40 individuals and businesses donated to the campaign which netted $375,915 for equipment and $142,000 for scholarships. "Rooms in the new building will be named in honor of each donor of $2500 or more. There are still a few rooms needing sponsors," said Hofstrand, adding, "Anyone wishing to sponsor a room may do so by calling me at 217-581-3526." @1!]

Business students at EIU have a new opportunity thanks to the vision and foresight of Dean Ted lvarie. lvarie's plan to provide scholarship endowments for top academic performers and also for needy students struck a responsive chord with several alums. The program works this way: A minimum of $10,000 (which may be paid over a period of time) is donated to the EIU Foundation to establish a scholarship fund. Earnings from the endowment provide financial assistance to students selected in accordance with the donor's criteria. Scholarships may be based upon academic performance, fmancial need or both. Awardees receive recognition as worthy recipients of the scholarship as well as financial assistance for their education. Dean Ivarie expressed gratitude to the program's sponsors saying, "It is exciting to be able to recruit top high school and community college students by offering financial assistance. Top academic performers receive financial assistance offers from other
business schools but until now EIU lacked the resources to compete for these students unless they demonstrated financial need. Now, thanks to this program, we can assist hQlh talented and needy business students! The quality of our students and programs will
be enhanced." [jill
