From THE SUPER’S DESK….
Hello everyone! Last Tuesday, July 15th, we had our monthly meeting. We had one visitor from the Lawrence model RR club. We also had Chuck Hitchcock attend for the first time in over a year. We had a light attendance, I believe due to having to move up the meeting date to get a room for the meeting. We also were unable to have the scheduled clinics because the overhead projector was loaned out and I did not know who had it! I will discuss this later. But we did have Dennis Owens get up and give us a short half hour presentation on the history of American railroads. Thanks again for your clinic! You really saved the day. We did not have a report by our paymaster again at this meeting. In fact our paymaster has assigned Louis as his replacement while he is away. Louis reported that we are doing OK. There was no white elephant exchange at this meeting. We did have some AP awards given at this meeting. Roger Percival received four awards. He received three awards for Cars and one for Motive Power. Be sure to congratulate him the next time you see him. Well that time has finally come! I do not need any more clinics for this year. But if you have a clinic that you are thinking of giving but it needs work, please consider completing it for next year. A year gives all of us time to put something together before then! I am sure the new Superintendent could use all the volunteers he/she could get. First, we will not have a regular meeting at the Lamar location in August. We will be having our annual train show and meeting this coming August 2nd. Second, I will be collecting the PC projector after the last clinic that is using it at the train show. It seems to me the best way to prevent problems in the future of no projector and no way to allow the clinicians to present their clinics! It was suggested that we try to use a check out procedure so I would know who has the projector but that does not get the projector to the meeting. It may tell me who to call or e-mail before the meeting but it does not mean they did not pass it to someone else or that they will make the meeting. If I have it then I know where it is so I can assure the clinicians that the projector will definitely be available for the meeting. I have to be at every meeting to lead the meeting so I will keep the projector for the rest of my term as superintendent. Now I have been able to talk Warren Weston into moving his clinic “Modeling Grain Elevators” to November. His clinic will replace the clinic that was to be given by Bob Miller. The second clinic “How to set up signaling and CTC using JMRI and PanelPro” by Jim Duncan will be moved to another time also. I have asked if he would be interested in January and he said that he would so that clinic is the first schedule for 2009. Well that is all I have for now. See you at the July meeting, until then happy railroading!

From Andy Sperandeo Hello all, Again, please excuse this group mailing, but I wanted to let you all know that I'm going in for my cancer surgery on Monday. The surgeon will remove my left lung, but I expect a good outcome overall. I saw an oncologist last Monday to make sure that surgery was the best option, and I'm now convinced that it is. The form of cancer that I have is pretty rare, and it's one that doesn't respond to chemotherapy and is affected only slightly by radiation. That makes surgery the best if not the only choice, and the long-term survival rates after surgery to remove this cancer are very good. I don't have all the e-mail addresses that I have at work on file here at home, so if you know of anyone who' be interested who isn't on this mailing list, feel free to let them know. I'll be a Wau-kesha Memorial Hospital once again, but I expect to be home by Friday at the latest. I'll be seeing you, Andy
Please keep Scale Rails in hard copy form. This is the single best thing the NMRA has done in years.....Steve and his crew have in my opinion made SR one of THE PREMIER model railroad publications out there!!!!! As a fixed income person on disability I am letting my subscription to MR run out to offset the increase...Scale Rails has become to show piece of the NMRA (and in my opinion is superior to MR)...let us not shoot ourselves in the foot by making it a web item. Dear Railroad fans,
The Trains are Coming! More than 113,000 visitors went to the Liverpool showing of "Art in the Age of Steam." On Sept. 13 it opens in Kansas for it's only other stop. Our web site now has a large number of images of the works that will be on display as well as the extensive programing associated with the exhibition. http://www.nelson-atkins.org/ We've learned that CBS Sunday Morning News plans to visit us Sept. 29 and 30 to do a feature on the exhi-bition and I will alert everyone when that show date is announced. The 280-page catalogue has received excellent reviews and is now available on Amazon.com for around $40.
