LC:WINK - Do you know what you need to know?
Improving library skills at Exeter College
Information & Learning Services: Connect ● Inform ● Empower
The reason
Previously low uptake of library skills sessions
Assumption that students know how to use a library catalogue/e-books and e-resources
When questioned during inductions, vast majority of students say they haven’t used an electronic library catalogue before
Some students and staff reach the end of an academic year without knowing how to search the library catalogue
Many students leave the college having never borrowed resources from the Learning Centres
Research suggests students who ‘read’ more (borrowing books and accessing electronic resources), achieve better grades. (University of Huddersfield, 2011)
The partnership
Working with STEW (Safeguarding/Tutoring/Equality & Wellbeing) team – study skills/information literacy skills
Backing of Deputy Principal – the big stick!
2 pronged approach – LC inductions and mandatory session/new schedule for Research Skills session
The project aim
Aim: To create and deliver a mandatory session to all first year students in the first term covering basic library skills
To create a session that will be relevant, timely and engaging to students
To include: Benefits of using LC resources
How to access these resources
Activities to engage the students
Mechanism to record students learning and feedback
