CLIMATE & CORRELATION STUDY GUIDE
LEARNING TARGETS
LT#1: I can use the 5 factors of climate to compare the climates of different locations
LT#2: I can analyze a graph to determine if there is any type of correlation
LT1: MATCHING WORD BANK
1. The atmosphere acts like a blanket trapping in heat. The higher up you go, the less atmosphere there is, making it colder.
2. Mountains can block winds from carrying precipitation to certain areas.
3. The equator generally gets the most direct sunlight. As a result, further away from it you go the colder it gets.
4. This will cause a location to get more precipitation and more moderate temperatures.
5. This factor brings different types of air masses to different parts of the world.
6. The further from the equator you go, the more you are affected by Earth’s tilt, resulting in more extreme seasons.

Answer the questions based on the map below.
*Prevailing winds blow from west to east
1. Where would you expect to have more precipitation: Iron Hills or Gondor? Which factors are most
important?
2. Where would you expect to have more of an extreme difference between summer and winter:
Mordor or Eriador? Which factors are most important?
3. Where would you expect to have warmer temperatures: Eriador or Iron Hills? Which factors are most
important?
4. Where would you expect to have colder temperatures: Eriador or Mordor? Which factors are most
important?
5. Would you expect Gondor or Rohan to have a drier climate? Which factors are most important?
LT1 : Use the map to answer the questions below.
1. Where would you expect to have more precipitation: Portland or Denver? Which factors are most
important?
2. Where would you expect to have more of an extreme difference between summer and winter:
Dallas or Minneapolis? Which factors are most important?
3. Where would you expect to have a cooler climate: Denver or Kansas City? Which factors are most
important?
4. Where would you expect to have more of an extreme difference between summer and winter:
Cincinnati or Washington DC? Which factors are most important?
5. Where would you expect to have a dryer climate: Illinois or Nevada? Which factors are most
important?
6. Where would you expect to have warmer temperatures: Dallas or Minneapolis? Which factors are
most important?
7. Where would you expect to have more of an extreme difference between summer and winter: San
Jose or St. Louis? Which factors are most important?
3. Where would you expect to have a cooler climate: Seattle or Los Angeles? Which factors are most
important?
