SOLUTION PROFILE

Business BenefitsHitachi Unified Storage systems with Hitachi NAS Platform family were designed to meet the rigorous demands of Oracle databases without compromising reliability, efficiency, performance or low cost. As your Oracle and file sharing requirements increase, these storage solutions will scale accord-ingly. They will improve productivity and enable better decision-making while reduc-ing the overall cost of supporting your most critical applications.

Hitachi network attached storage solutions address your biggest challenges within your Oracle environments by delivering:

Lower TCO Through Hitachi Innovation

For large-scale Oracle environments, running multiple database instances can quickly become a management nightmare. Furthermore, the licensing costs associated with supporting multiple, discrete databases can drive up the overall cost to maintain this environment.

Hitachi NAS Platform has industry-leading price-to-performance ratio with up to 30% less TCO within the 1st year of operation. HNAS supports massive consolidation, enabling database administrators to con-solidate multiple database instances on a single system. HNAS supports file systems up to 256TB, allowing you to use fewer NAS heads to support your given workload. And, HNAS offers block-level intelligent deduplica-tion, which can reduce the number of disks required by up to 30% while improving perfor-mance by 10% or more.

While managing large Oracle databases can overwhelm administrators, Hitachi offers a single unified management platform to manage Hitachi Unified Storage with Hitachi NAS Platform systems for Oracle envi-ronments. With Hitachi Command Suite, administrators can configure, provision and manage their overall Oracle storage infra-structure from a single tool quickly and easily, reducing operating costs and complexity.

Another innovative feature offered by HUS with HNAS is Hitachi Dynamic Tiering (HDT). HDT software simplifies storage administra-tion, solves the complexities of implementing data lifecycle management and optimizes the use of tiered storage. It eliminates the need for time-consuming manual data

classification and data movement to signifi-cantly improve tiered storage efficiencies.

Together, these features can enable you to lower TCO associated with running Oracle databases, without compromising perfor-mance, efficiency or availability.

Capacity Efficiency

The volume, variety and velocity nature of today’s data warehouse is changing the dynamics of data volume capacity requirements. As Oracle databases grow, managing your storage capacity efficiently become critical. To address this challenge, Hitachi NAS Platform offers features, such as a tiered file system (TFS). TFS enables administrators to automatically distribute different Oracle tables on different tiers of storage, including flash or standard hard disk drives (HDDs). Place your least critical data on the most cost-effective storage tier, or migrate critical data sets to higher- performing storage. Innovative TFS from Hitachi reduces file system overhead by up to 30% compared with other solutions.

Our intelligent block-level deduplication can also improve the capacity efficiency of your Oracle storage infrastructure. With Hitachi NAS Platform you can experience up to a 90% increase in capacity and operational efficiencies in testing and development environments through our primary dedupli-cation. Typically, with production data, our deduplication can free up to 30% of storage capacity. Furthermore, our deduplication is intelligent; if the system reaches 50% CPU utilization the deduplication feature auto-matically throttles back to avoid negatively affecting workload performance, unlike competing solutions. For large databases and to accommodate future growth, HNAS can scale up to 30PB of deduplicated data compared to 100TB for competitive solutions.

Simple, Robust Data Protection

Enterprise competitive advantage, inno-vation and operational efficiency stem from readily available data through data-bases and the applications they support. Therefore, your Oracle environment needs to be high performing, without data out-ages, and always available, even in the event of a disaster or unplanned outage. Hitachi offers various solutions to protect your valuable data, including snapshots, clones and replication.

Snapshots, which are readable file system copies and clones, which are writeable file copies, both enable quick and easy backups of your Oracle environment with-out impacting performance or end user experience. Both snapshots and clones are space-efficient. They use pointers to blocks, without duplicating data. Hitachi NAS Platform can support up to 100 million snapshots to accommodate the most strin-gent of requirements for large databases. By combining HNAS with Hitachi TrueCopy, a synchronous replication solution, you can easily replicate specific tables or an entire Oracle database to a remote location for disaster recovery purposes. Additionally, snapshots and clones can be used for test-ing or development of new applications.

Simplified Administration: Hitachi, Oracle and NFSNFS is an agile platform for running Oracle that combines low cost of deployment with ease of administration and maintenance, As a protocol, NFS is widely regarded as simple to set up and easier to manage. Operations such as volume and file system provisioning, scaling and management are handled at the NAS storage, quickly and easily. Unlike SAN deployments, there is no need for SAN switches, zoning or server host bus adapters, which increase cost. Hitachi NAS Platform and NFS are ideally suited for sim-plifying the management and administration of Oracle environments. Along with adding Hitachi Command Suite, which provides unified management of file, block and object data, running Oracle on NFS and HNAS can impact both capex and opex. Hitachi Command Suite enables a 40% higher terabytes per FTE management ratio than competing storage management solutions.

For the most part, it is the performance and scalability which helps us consolidate and simplify management of our NAS infrastructure.

Hitachi Data Systems offers a unique approach to unified storage manage-ment: a single virtualized platform for all data (structured and unstructured) with single-pane-of-glass management for het-erogeneous environments. Management encompasses storage resources, snapshot- based data protection and health/perfor-mance monitoring and reporting. HDS is the only vendor that can provide a single, virtualized and scalable data management architecture for all open systems platforms as well as all data and information types.

Using Hitachi Command Suite enables a common set of management tools across all storage assets, whether they are the products of Hitachi Data Systems or our competitors. Our common platform and management tools improve the produc-tivity of storage administrators and enable better cost management (power, cooling, resource sharing). They support simplified data migration (block and file storage), and higher availability (IOPS and reliability) with less risk (data protection).

Solution ElementsHitachi Unified Compute Platform for Oracle and Hitachi Unified Storage with Hitachi NAS Platform compose a complete configuration. They are optimally configured to support virtually any sized Oracle data-base workload. The configuration includes: Hitachi server, Hitachi storage and network-ing. They work together in an optimized and balanced configuration of compute pro-cessing capability and storage performance for the specific workload requirements of an Oracle database workload (see Table 1).

Hitachi Command Suite

Hitachi Command Suite features a unified architecture that integrates the products from the bottom up. Instead of separate products linked together, the software products in Hitachi Command Suite use a common code base. They use the same graphical user interface and share a

common look and feel. Configuration and storage tier information is combined and synchronized in a database that multiple products access. This practice avoids difficulties of placing information on sepa-rate databases, which require larger data repositories that could be subject to incon-sistencies. The new design improves the efficiency and reliability of storage manage-ment information, and provides a consistent and more flexible user experience. Hitachi Command Director produces valuable infor-mation that you need to enable chargeback systems for private, public or hybrid cloud deployments. Hitachi Command Director allows you to analyze, report, orchestrate and monitor your storage infrastructure from a single tool.
