a vision for academic successQ&a: SUPERINTENDENT DR. JEFFREY MOSS
It’s back to school for students in Beaufort County
and newly appointed Superintendent Dr. Jeffrey
Moss is ready to get the year started. Passionate
about education, Moss shares his vision for today’s
education and his goals for building our district’s
academic successes.
Highly regarded for bringing technology into
the classroom as the former superintendent of
Lee County Schools in Sanford, NC, Moss sees
opportunities to expand the business and education
connection to drive academic success in our region.
cBM: what’s the biggest change you’ve seen in your 30 years in public education?
Moss: Digital learning in our classrooms has
changed what we teach and how we teach it.
Students today can access information with the
touch of a key, communicate around the world and
share cultural learning experiences with students.
Teachers have morphed into the role of a facilitator
of instruction instead of the keeper of all knowledge
and students have the ability to become creators of
learning.
cBM: you’re an advocate of listening to the business community when it comes to preparing students to prosper. how do the two partner to spark success?
Moss: I believe that education is economic development. We should provide the business community with graduates
who can function in today’s workplace. One avenue to spark that conversation would be an economic competitiveness
committee of business leaders who can share what they expect in employees.
cBM: Just last year in nc, you implemented curriculum developed in partnership with business leaders that targets job skills proficiency. would that work well for our district?
Moss: Partnerships on job skills proficiency would be beneficial, allowing businesses to inform our teachers and
administrators about what they’re looking for when they consider hiring our graduates.
That opens the door to redesign curriculum that meets the needs of business while also meeting the educational
standards we require as a school district. Apprenticeship-type programs allow companies to assist in training potential
employees for new or expanding businesses.
cBM: now that you’ve had some time here, what’s your favorite thing about the Lowcountry so far?
Moss: The people! I have met so many business leaders, school employees and community leaders who have education
as a top priority. It’s extremely important for all of these groups, along with our parents, to value education and to
recognize that we shape our community and our lives through the ways we educate our students.

education report: BUSINESS & EDUcaTION ROI EaRNS a+
S tudents aren’t the only ones prepping for another successful school year. The chamber heads back to school as well as
we kick off Project connect, helping connect teachers in need of classroom supplies with local businesses that want
to support education in a tangible way.
Since its inception over $32,000 have been used to purchase needed school supplies. From dictionaries to art supplies,
digital media and more, weekly “wish” lists are published in the Island Packet newspaper and available at the chamber.
For the chamber’s Business Education Partnership committee, it’s all about creating and supporting partnerships
between local businesses and schools. Business education partnerships help enhance the quality of education throughout
the Lowcountry through programs such as our Golden Apple Program offering area teachers and staff access to perks
and discounts generously donated by member businesses.
It’s a great way for your business to join in, like
Palmetto Electric Cooperative, which helps shine
the welcome light for new area teachers with
special incentives including waived deposits.
More than 55 business members have signed on
this school year. Discounted dining, retail, salon,
spa, automotive and other industries also make
the grade.
Preparing our students for life’s opportunities
is key and the reality store does just that. An
updated version of the classic “career fair,” the
chamber partners with schools for a morning
where high school students are given a “career”
bank balance and life based upon their GPA and
level of education.
It gives local high schoolers a dose of reality on
how education is tied to their success later in life.
“You have to make real life choices like whether
to buy a new or used car, pay rent or a mortgage
and still have enough for groceries. It’s not easy,”
said one local student. Participating member
business areas include banking, insurance,
housing, automotive grocery and utilities.
Your chamber is a great place to get
connected to education in the Lowcountry.
Business Education Partnership programs
provide everyone with an opportunity to support
education and generate a smart return for the
community.

Kirby at [email protected] or go to

shelter cove towne centre reshapes mid-island venue
H ow does a stroll along the
waters of Broad Creek, followed
by some shopping and dining sound?
As developments continue at Shelter Cove Towne
Centre, the island’s mid-island venue will soon
begin to look a little different.
Construction began in April on a joint venture
between Kroger Real Estate and Blanchard
& Calhoun Commercial to create the 42-acre
mixed-use development. The $74 million project,
completed in three phases, will include a Kroger
grocery store, retail stores, restaurants, gas
station, waterfront park and residential condos.
With phase one reshaping the mall into an upscale walking village, the shopping centre is anchored by Belk and
Kroger, along with retailers Jos. A. Bank Clothiers, GNC and future tenants, with completion scheduled for January, 2014.
Public opinion came into play last month as the centre partnered with crowd-sourcing online Popularise to learn
shoppers’ top choices. From top-pick Trader Joe’s to Pottery Barn, community response brought over 300 ideas and
3,500 votes within the first week.
Phase two’s five-acre waterfront park will connect with the island’s existing 12 mile-trail system as phase three
further shapes development with waterfront apartments along Broad Creek.

Firms such as Starbucks, Disney, Toyota and BMW succeed
because they’re innovative, not just because they’ve got great
business models.
By focusing on future needs and markets, these top
companies employ actions that result in innovation that
transform the market and set it apart from competitors.
“Innovation matters because it’s the only way to turn a corporate
strategy into real accomplishments,” according to Langdon

Give yourself room for a little agility and the ability to test a variety
of ideas. “Rather than committing to six-month marketing campaigns
on Facebook and Twitter, dedicate a small budget to run two-week

Hilton Head Shore Notes perform their annual concerts. From Broadway hits to jazz standards, not to mention gospel, rock, patriotic and country western, these musical veterans showcase the art of a cappella singing like no other. This feat brought them a first place win in the small chorus division in this year’s regional competition in Daytona, FL.
Led by Musical Director Beth Green, also known as “The Music Lady,” the 30-member group performs close, four-part harmony sung without accompaniment. A 14-year veteran of Sweet Adelines International, Green also serves as children’s music director for First Presbyterian Church and teaches in area schools.
With a vast repertoire of songs, you can enjoy the Hilton Head Shore Notes’ vocals throughout the year at various events. Their next appearance will be at the Hilton Head 350/50 celebration on October 5. They also feature award-winning women’s and men’s quartets as guest performers at their shows, so mark your calendars for their next show on March 1, at the Hilton Head Island High School’s Visual and Performing Arts Center.
As a chapter of Sweet Adelines International, they also give back to the community by donating a portion of show proceeds to various music programs including those at the Boys & Girls Club, Hope Haven Crisis Center, Hilton Head High School’s Out of the Blue Chorus, Hilton Head Elementary School’s music program, the Young Singer’s Foundation Scholarship Fund, Programs for Exceptional People, Memory Matters and the Children’s Center.
While their mission is to promote, preserve and enhance the harmonic tradition of women’s barbershop music, “We are more than just a hard-working a cappella ensemble; we are a family,” says Shore Notes member June Somers adding, “Our international motto sums it up perfectly: “Real Women, Real Harmony, Real Fun!”
