Low‐mow Kentucky Bluegrass Variety Performance for Fairways Researchers: Chicago District Golf Assoc. ‐ Derek Settle, Tim Sibicky, Nick DeVries Paragraph 1 by Peter Westfall, 2011 student intern, Purdue University
Goal: Evaluate Kentucky bluegrass variety performance under fairway conditions in Chicago. Location: Sunshine Course’s 3 Kentucky bluegrass fairway in play – Lemont, Illinois Background: Dr. Cale Bigelow, my turfgrass professor at Purdue, always told me that Kentucky Bluegrass (KBG) is the Cadillac of lawn grass in the Midwest, and when you’re buying a Cadillac what’s one of the most important details that you can choose? Color. Now, with all the advancements in turf cultivar research you can choose the color of your KBG just like you can choose the color of your Cadillac that sits in the driveway. Whether you’re looking for a nice dark green, almost blue or maybe a more yellow green for your golf course or home lawn, KBG has a color for you. For example, based on visual color data collected in mid‐June we found one cultivar worthy of a 9 and it was Moonbeam. Moonbeam was “…developed by Pure Seed Testing and tested as Y2K‐136. A cross between Midnight and Moonlight Kentucky bluegrasses, Moonbeam is an incredibly dark green bluegrass that is darker green than both its parents” (Rose Agri‐Seed Inc.). This explains its dark green, almost blue color. In contrast, we found Julia to be the lightest green with an average visual color rating of 4.3.
On fairways, Kentucky bluegrass offers value with less input compared to creeping bentgrass. For example, inputs of fungicides will be much lower for dollar spot (Sclerotinia homoeoecarpa). Additionally, Kentucky bluegrass has excellent resistance to brown patch (Rhizoctonia solani). However, vulnerabilities still exist such as poor green‐up ability in spring. Additionally, newer varieties must have resistance summer patch (Magnaporthe poae), a root disease associated summers that are both hot and wet – like 2010 and 2011.
Brief Material and Methods: A total of 52 varieties were seeded in 5 ft. by 10 ft. plots on 2 July, 2009 using a randomized complete block design with 3 replications. The trial’s proximity near a building reduces air movement and was selected to favor disease development. Hand seeding took place at a rate of 2 lbs per 1000 ft2. Plots were managed at a height of 0.75 inch, irrigated as needed, and fertilized annually with 2 lbs N per1000 sq. ft. Monthly data in 2011 included, visual quality, visual color, NDVI, herbicide tolerance, weed encroachment and spring green‐up.
