L o v e W h e r e Y o u L i v eBristol’s Universities, Students’ Unions and partner agencies work with you as residents of this amazing city to create opportunities to get involved with the community and take responsibility for where you live.

For more information visit: www.lovewhereyoulivebristol.co.uk

Get to know your neighbours – you never know when you might need their help. Introduce yourself, say hello and maybe even share a slice of cake at a community welcome event.

Make a good first impression by keeping a tidy garden and ensuring that bins are brought in.

Make a difference and volunteer on one of hundreds of local projects across the city.

Please be considerate to those around you. Not everyone in your neighbourhood is a student and our beautiful period buildings were not built for modern noise. So, do your best to keep the volume down, let your neighbours know if you are planning to have friends over and, when in doubt, move the party to a free venue in town!

Support your community by attending a local residents’ group or neighbourhood forum, or become a Community Ambassador for the University of Bristol or Community Rep for UWESU.

Bristol is one of the safest places to live and work in the UK, because Bristolians look out for one another.

By taking a few simple steps, you can help to keep yourself and your property safe.

Always remember to lock your doors and windows when you go out – 1 in 5 burglars walk straight in through an open door or window.

Keep laptops, smartphones, keys and other valuables out of sight and register your valuables on www.immobilise.com. That way, if something is stolen, the police are far more likely to get it back for you.

You can download and install tracking software on laptops, phones and tablets. It helps catch burglars red-handed – and help you get your stuff back.

Only let people you trust into your home, if you feel unsafe call the police. If you are worried about the security of your home or need help setting your security alarm, talk to your landlord.

Page 5: Love Where You Live

Try not to walk home alone. Walk with friends, use public transport or get a licensed taxi from a designated taxi rank.

UBU have an agreement with VCars called the Taxi Safe scheme. If you don’t have any cash, you can order a taxi on 0117 925 2626 and leave your student card with the driver - you’ll need to collect your card and pay your fare at their office the next day.

If you feel unsafe, try taking out your headphones. This can help you to feel more aware of your surroundings.

Enjoy yourself responsibly and watch out for your friends. Remember to ask a friend to watch your drink if you need to make a phone call or use the bathroom.

Look after your friends and don’t let them make their own way home, especially if they’ve been drinking.

It is never your fault if someone commits violence against you. The only person responsible for violence is the perpetrator, no matter what you were wearing, who you were with, or what you were doing.

If you have been affected by violence in or outside your home and would like advice, visit www.lwylbristol.co.uk

K n o w Y o u r B i n s !Waste collection varies across the UK, this is how we do it in Bristol:

You should have four different waste containers in your home: a black box and a green box for recycling, a brown bin for compost and a landfill bin.

Recycling is collected once a week and non-recyclables once a fortnight - your collection day can be found here: www.bristol.gov.uk/collectiondayfinder

Recycling must be rinsed clean and sorted into sections within each container

Overflowing bins and waste left at the side of bins will not be collected, but if you recycle correctly this won’t be a problem – don’t panic you can order more boxes if needed.

Please put your bins out before 7am on the day of collection and remember to bring them back on to your property once emptied so that pushchairs and wheelchairs can safely use the pavements. No bin storage? Talk to your landlord.

Top Tip: write your house number on all of your bins so you know exactly which ones are yours.
