Work experience with Vivienne Westwood awaits one student who won the national Professional Clothing Awards. Summer Gill, a HND student aged 21, beat all-comers to be selected as the overall contest winner with her airport ground crew outfit. Summer won £1000 and a six month placement.

Programme Leader Elisa Bratton said Summer and fellow student Holly Varney-Lonsdale were the centre of Press attention at the event demanding to know how Bedford College beat all the university entrants to the glittering prizes – for the second year running.

From the personal service of a small independent salon with one senior staff member and an apprentice, to multi-talented many-handed businesses, there is somewhere to suit all.

Top to toe, hair to pedicure, the hair and beauty business is booming and that requires new talent coming through each and every year.

The hot house for such exciting new stars is Brooks Training Salon and Spa on the High Street. Part of The Bedford College Group, the centre prepares trainees for the world of work – as well as offering cut price hair and beauty by the nearly and newly qualified.

Each year the trainees bring the High Street to a standstill as they parade from Brooks to the Bedford Corn Exchange for the annual Hair and Beauty Show attended by national company judges and local sponsors including Love Bedford, the band for Bedford businesses.

Here are some of the wonderful, and sometimes weird styles which show the breadth of imagination and creativity of the students.

Summer’s design was judged to best meet the needs of the selected job over 10 other finalists from respected BA fashion degree programmes including; Northampton, De Monfort, Manchester Fashion Institute, Letterkenny Institute (Ireland) and Faculdade de Aquitetura (Portugal).

Her fellow Bedford College HND student Holly Varney-Lonsdale, 19 of Kempston, also made it to the last six in the national competition with her firefighter kit design. Last year students from the Bedford College took 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes in the Personal, Protective, Equipment (PPE) category in the national Professional Clothing Awards, beating university students from across the UK. The course also took the prize for overall winning University. Said Director of the Arts Toby Clark said: “The success of this course demonstrates how the riverside Bedford College South Bank Arts Centre is a hothouse for talent across the arts. Our students can stay here and gain degrees, win places at the best art schools and universities, or step into great jobs.”

BEST IN BRITAINBedford College beat top fashion and textile universities across the UK in a national competition. More than 2,000 students nationwide entered The Bradford Textile Society awards but Sophie Penwright took first prize in the Clothworkers’ Company Award with a printed textile design suitable for both fashion and interior. Her work “Reimagined Safari” is now on display at the Dye House Gallery in Bradford.

Sophie, aged 19 from Kempston, won £300 and is planning to go on to the new BA Hons Degree at Bedford College with a view to becoming a fashion buyer. Elisa Bratton, Fashion and Textile Programme Leader said: “It is really exciting to see how the HND course here at Bedford College is providing students with the platform, opportunity and teaching expertise to compete on a national scale alongside the top BA institutions in fashion and textiles.”

Love Bedford helped to spread the word about the glamour and glitz of the town centre by promoting the Hair and Beauty show to 1,000s via an Instagram photo competition.

Bedford College is now a national award-winning Fashion and Textile art centre offering a full degree course. Students can progress from an HND on to a full arts degree at the South Bank Arts Centre, validated by the University of Northamptonshire.
