    Louvre Museum

    The Lauvre Museum is a historic

    monument and is one of the largestmuseums in the world. It is located

    in Paris in the antique royal palace

    of Louvre. The museum was

    inaugurated on the ends of the 18th

    century and it is the most important

    of France. Actually, it receives more

    than 8 millions of visitors a year.

    The Louvre Palace began like strength for Felipe II in the twelve century but was altered a lot of

    times during the middle age. Some kings, like Carlos V y Felipe II used the palace like royal

    residence and in this time their artistic collections accumulated. When the royal residence was

    transferred to Versalles Palace, the building would begin the process to transform in one of the

    most important museums in the world.

    By the middle of 18th

    century, it has several proposals to create a public gallery in 1747. During the

    France revolution the Louvre was transform in a public museum, in May of 1791. The Louvre was a

    place that joins all the monuments of the arts and science. So, the museum opened on 10 August

    1793, the first anniversary that the monarchy disappeared. In 1989 a glass pyramid was

    constructed.

    The collection in Louvre has about 300,000 works before to 1948 and exposed about 35,000. Thegreat collection was organized for themes, in different departments: Eastern antiquities, Egyptian,

    Greek, Roman and Etruscan antiquities, history of medieval Louvre and the Louvre, paintings,

    sculpture, art, graphic arts and art of Islam. Among the most important paintings are: La Gioconda

    by Leonardo da Vinci, Liberty Leading the People by Delacroix, The Wedding at Cana by Verons.

    Among the sculptures the most important works are: The Venus de Milo in ancient Greece, The

    seated scribe Ancient Egyptian, The Winged Victory by Samotracia in the Hellenistic period of

    ancient Greece.

    The Louvre is bigger and the art lovers could spend several days crossing it. If you want to make a

    general idea and see the principal works, it is necessary spend at least a complete morning for

    crossing the museum.
