President’s Message from Patrice Mire

Hello Everyone!

WOW! It is really hard to believe that another school year has come and gone!! With our summer vacation now upon us, it is time to relax, renew, and revitalize!! This is also a time to reflect on the past school year and begin making plans for the next.

At the April LSTA Board meeting, the final touches were made to our next round of FREE regional workshops: “DOKtoring Your Assessments.” Teachers will learn how to utilize Webb's Depth of Knowledge and Hess's Cognitive Rigor matrix to evaluate science assessment items and to determine the complexity of science tasks. Details for the workshop in your region can be found on the LSTA web site (http://www.lsta.info/free-summer-regional-lsta-workshops-doktoring-your-assessments/) and on our Facebook page. To secure funds for instructional materials, teachers must often depend on their skills as a grant writer. Every regular classroom mathematics and science public/charter school teacher is

eligible to write an annual proposal for the state legislated Quality Science and Mathematics (QSM) funds. To assist in the application process, LSTA and LATM will be offering regional QSM Grant Writing Workshops sponsored by the QSM Council. These workshops will be designed to assist teachers and district staff who provide guidance to teachers who wish to submit proposals to QSM and the other programs available to educators by improving the quality of applications. It will support a Q&A period directly focused on the content area of the teacher and allow for small group exchanges on possible problems of earlier submissions and/or assistance in developing proposals for a 2018 QSM submission. 2018 QSM Proposals for non-consumable mathematics and science materials and equipment will be due September 10, 2018. Participants will be able to bring copies of earlier submissions or ideas for proposed 2018 QSM projects. Stay tuned for workshops to be offered near you. I want to remind everyone that it is time to submit proposals for 1-hour concurrent sessions for the 2018 LATM/LSTA Joint Conference. Concurrent session will be conducted on TUESDAY and/or WEDNESDAY, October 23rd and 24th, 2018. Proposals must be submitted via the online form by August 6, 2018. The Lead Presenter and Co-presenter(s) listed in this proposal must be registered for the conference. Registration should be completed by the Early Bird Deadline. To complete the submission form CLICK HERE or visit https://goo.gl/forms/MFQKg45ztI6AqG9a2. If there are any concerns or questions about this process, please contact Tricia Miller and Trisha Fos, [email protected].

Do you know an outstanding formal or informal science educator that you feel needs recognition for the outstanding work they do? Do you need assistance in attending the 2018 LATM/LSTA Joint Conference in Shreveport? Then, please check out our web site for a list and description of awards with the links to the nomination forms and a link to apply for a travel grant! Please take time to read through the newsletter. It contains plenty of information for educators (ex. awards, conferences, workshops, and other professional development opportunities) along with great opportunities for our students. Yours in SCIENCE EDUCATION,

Sun Belt Science of Baseball Youth Clinic

The Sun Belt Conference and Science of Sport are excited to continue our mission of bringing STEM principles to the young people of Louisiana (and all across the world!) through the sports they love!

Lafayette area teachers and students were invited to participate in Science of Baseball events on the campus of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Students, ranging in age from late elementary to early high school, took to the field for a STEM Field Trip where they learned how to measure their strike zone, determine the perfect angle to hit a home run, calculate their fielding percentage, and discover other STEM principles in the game of baseball. 50+ young people spent time learning a

few Science of Baseball lessons, then testing their skills with some on-field projects and even watched the Ragin' Cajuns put all those concepts to play in that evening's game.

Teachers also joined in on the fun by taking part in a professional development workshop! They were provided with the Sun Belt Conference Science of Baseball curriculum, a teacher's bin full of resources and materials to accompany the projects in the lessons and also a 3 hour training on how to best implement the curriculum into their own classrooms. Thanks to the College Football Playoff Foundation, over 20 teachers also got some extra

swag before watching the tournament game that night.

The Lafayette Parish School System would like to thank the students, faculty, and staff for a job well done in sustaining our district recycling initiative during the 2017-2018 school year. LPSS has 30 sites currently contributing to the recycling stream keeping approximately 10.5 tons per month of paper and plastics out of the waste stream. Reports show LPSS recycled more than 83.5 tons from September through April of this year. Southside High School and Prairie Elementary lead the way for the district utilizing two recycling containers at each campus. Principal Cayce Booher said, “Setting up a recycling program on Prairie's campus was a great way to teach students about the environment and how what they do impacts it. It has also helped promote leadership skills as we have a team of students who spearhead recycling on our campus.” LPSS is the single largest commercial recycling customer for Waste Management in Acadiana and has increased recycling more than 18% since September of 2017. Congratulations to the following Lafayette Parish students for placing in the Louisiana Literary Rally in the named Science disciplines:

Mission 13 is open to school districts serving grades 5-12, informal education organizations and 2- and 4-year colleges. Interested communities must inquire about the program no later than June 15, 2018. An important consideration - the expectation is that a team of educators in a participating community will engage typically 300 students, for a pre-college initiative, or 30-40 students for an undergraduate initiative, over 9 weeks of experiment design and proposal writing spanning September through November 2018. Students across the community are separated into teams of 3-5 students, each team designing and proposing a microgravity experiment, and making the case for why their experiment should be selected for flight to ISS. The Student Spaceflight Experiments Program (SSEP) provides a fully authentic research competition as a STEM Project Based Learning experience. Launch of the Mission

13 flight experiments is currently projected for Spring 2019.

Teacher Institute for Evolutionary Science (TIES)

The purpose of the Teacher Institute for Evolutionary Science (TIES) is to familiarize interested science teachers with the concepts of natural selection, common ancestry, and diversity in order for them to confidently cover the topics in their classrooms and fulfill their curriculum requirements. TIES introduces teachers to the most important points of evolution and natural selection with a focus on the amazing advances of genetics. The success of TIES depends upon providing ready-to-use resources that teachers can begin to use immediately. Participating teachers or student teachers leave our workshops with presentation slides, labs, guided reading assignments, an exam, and a valuable resource list for their lesson plans. TIES is funded by the Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science which is a subsidiary of the Center for Inquiry. School Districts wanting to in-service or provide professional development for their teachers can contact me to set up a workshop. The full workshop usually runs about 3 hours and includes content knowledge presentation on genetics and evolution, lab simulation and explanations and a walk through of the web page were they can access lots of free, high quality information, presentations, tests, labs, and activities. Here is a link to the website for your perusal: https://richarddawkins.net/ties/ If you are interested in becoming a member of this amazing Professional Learning Community as a teacher or scientist, please take a minute to sign up on the website. If you don’t want to participate, you can still feel free to take what resources you want and use them in your classroom. Everything that we have is FREE! You can also follow us on Facebook @RDFRSTIES and Twitter @rdfrsTIES. The links are also on our website.
