IN2MONTHS PUNK, SKATE
Why punk rock?It has the potential to bring immense free-dom and lessen disparity between people. I love the energy and passion that comes from punk rock.
Who are some of the first bands that got you into the genre?Green Day (Dookie album), The Offspring (Smash album), Gob, Another Joe, One Bad Pig, MXPX, Nerf Herder, Ace Troubleshooter, Dogwood … the Survival of the Fattest Compilation introduced us to bands like No Use For A Name, Lagwagon, Propaghandi, Strung Out and NOFX (this list could go for days).
Why Winnipeg?Love this city! The people are great, bands are fantastic and supportive, and all the people I love are here [including wives and children]. Hard to pack up and leave.
If music didn’t exist where would you be?[Scott] - I have been in bands since I was 13, If music didn’t exist I cant imagine what kind of trouble I’d have gotten into.
[Ray] - Honestly, I don’t know where I would be if music didn’t exist. I guess if it didn’t exist, we wouldn’t know what we’d be missing but if it was taken away from me, I would be a mess. It’s helped mold who I am today and through music, I’ve been able to make a ton of great friends both internation-ally and locally.
[Andy] - Without music I would lack all creativity.

TRIGGERSWhy punk rock?Well I know for me it’s what I grew up listen-ing to. Andrew and I have played in punk bands together since we were 15. I remem-ber playing community club shows with High Five Drive in high school and getting paid in HFD merch. Joel didn’t really play in punk bands growing up. I’m a sucker for thrash though and the rest of us have totally passed that off on him now too, which is awesome.
Who are some of the first bands that got you into the genre?Blink is one of the bands that influenced each of us when we picked up instruments as kids. More recently bands like Such Gold, the Menzingers, The Story So Far and Against Me!
Why Winnipeg?Well for starters, the music scene here is unparalleled. It also just so happens to be our home, and the home of our friends, families, and a hell of a lot of other awesome bands that have surfaced in the past few years. I mean sure, Winnipeg can suck when it’s -30, and your car doesn’t start or your bus doesn’t show up, and there’s 4 ft of snow on the ground and you can’t feel your face. But then you’ll somehow overcome the odds and make it to the Park Theatre for a Dead-beats show, and totally forget all of that other stuff immediately.
If music didn’t exist where would you be?Good question. We’ve all been playing in bands for so long it’s hard to imagine not having music as such a big part of our lives. Maybe we’d all have done better in school if music didn’t exist and we’d all be less broke? I’d for sure have more money and be way more bored.

Despite me having not heard of this band until recently, these guys have been around for a while. They manage to balance their band life with other priorities such as families, work and more band life, but they’ve been hiding under a rock for too long and now that they’re releasing an album they can’t hide anymore.
They are bringing back street and skate punk in a time when it’s much needed in the Winnipeg scene. We need more bands like them with less fashion and more action, figuratively that is of course; the way they dress I fully endorse. They create positive and intelligent punk rock and at the end of the day their goal isn’t so much the music as it is camaraderie and passion. There’s a consistent tempo and vibe through-out the album. It starts and ends strong and unified, though “Andronicus” is an interest-ing add to the album because it takes you to a pop-punk world that the rest of the album so clearly avoids. That being said the track is still great.
There is a definite influence of Propagandhi on this album, but I will never complain about that, no one can ever complain about that.
“Cause & Reflect” and “Fear the Unknown” are stand-out tracks for me as well as the lead off track “Monster”. It’s placement is spot on because it gets you in the right frame of mind as to what the next 35mins of your life will sound like.
You know when you hear people talking about bands that have been around a while and they’ve changed, or sold out, or whatever other bullshit people come up with these days? But you “like their older stuff” and “only listen to their first album”. That’s what this band sounds like…the timeless album people remember. Dookie, Smash, Pokinatcha. It’s fast, loud, and heavy and the fact that these guys have been at it for quite some time leads me to believe their sound won’t change too much.
Check out their album release at The Cavern on April 17. It’s a demand.

BOYS’ CLUBI was originally going to review their 2013 EP Dolores, but decided since I hadn’t heard Ginger Ale yet it made more sense to go in with fresh ears and no preconceived notions … other than wanting this album to sound just like Dolores.
Turns out this EP has quite a different vibe from the last one, mainly the tempo and his vocal delivery - It’s a bit slower, more melodic and feels a lot more sad. Lead singer Zac almost sounds like a different singer until he belts out with his lovable screams that give his voice more life and emotion, but there is very little screaming on this album and I want more!
It’s clear that these are sad songs, but not the kind of sad that makes you want to sit all alone in the basement bedroom of your parents house crying. They aren’t that type of emo. Though I do picture these songs being written in a college dorm by a really sad guy sometime in the late summer.
The way his lyrics flow over top the guitar melodies is very Jamie Rhoden of Title Fight-y, and that’s fuckin slick, right? And there is a very consistent overall vibe to this album that I appreciate, it has a way of sucking you right into his stories. It may not have been the Dolores I was hoping for, but it’s strong nonetheless and I really love his singing voice as much as his screams.
The tempo picks up towards the end of “Bloody Joe” and we hear a longer scream-ing sequence, but again not enough because the time you get into it, the song is over and they’re onto the next one.
I hope they put out another EP or full length and head back into the sound of Dolores because I see those songs sending off more energy live, but it’s nice to know these guys are well-rounded musicians who can write a solid emo tune.

WHY A ZINE?
WHY NOT?
If you’d like to contact me about being featured or reviewed for an upcoming issue please email me. Or if you just want to bitch and complain that’s cool too, I just won’t reply.
This zine began as a school project and instantly had me hooked. There are many outlets to drown yourself in music, arts and culture in the city, but I wanted to be picky and filter out all the crap I personally don’t care about. So what better way to do that than do it myself. I find out about cool stuff I want to know about and then I share my findings with you. Yeah I know there’s all sorts of cool music everywhere, but this zine is targeted to Winnipeg, MB punk and hardcore. I’m being specific because I can.
