to call HomeA ClaySpace

THE MEMBERS of ClaySpace are all travellers. They are on a creative ceramic journey. A journey directed by their love for the magic of clay and making beautiful things with their hands. Two years ago, this love for clay motivated a group of local ceramicists to create a cooperative. ClaySpace. So far ClaySpace has organised a number of exciting events, guest artist talks, exhibitions, and the building of a wood fired kiln. They have opened a retail outlet (next door to the Bookbarn at Lake Daylesford), and have plans for many more exciting events such as a ceramic conference, an annual ceramic encouragement award, and the creation of a skill list available for the community. However, due to an expensive and tight Daylesford rental market, ClaySpace hasn’t found an ideal home. (Studio/workshop/exhibition space). Ideally this space would be a place to share with the community, to meet and present artists talks, offer advice to beginners, and a space for exhibitions of ceramic work. If you know such a space please contact Petrus Spronk, on (03) 5348 3467, or on [email protected] next ClaySpace Artist Talk will feature Marina Pribaz, (Thursday, August 2, from 7pm at Daylesford Neighbourhood House, 13 Camp Street. Free entry for members, $5 non members.) Marina’s presentation is a satellite event for Craft Victoria’s Craft Cubed 2012 Festival, which runs during the month of August. Visit: craftvic.org.au for more details or phone Desiree on: 5423 9563.Petrus is hosting his own artist talk on Friday, October 5, at 7pm at the Neighbourhood House (Camp St, Daylesford).

There’s a Murmur ‘round Town(Three shows only)

All that Glitters......is not KylieIT HAS been 25 years (gulp… yes TWENTY FIVE years) since pop-ette Kylie Minogue and her spiral perm bounced out of Ramsay Street and into our lives doin’ the Locomotion. Ahh and they said it wouldn’t last. Along the way, Kyles has spawned many imitators, and one in particular stands out from the sequinned crowd. The 100% Kylie Show is the longest running and most successful Kylie tribute show on the planet. Lucy Holmes is Kylie’s most well known lookalike, and sparkling on stage with her backing dancers (including some of Kylie’s own) it’s mighty hard to tell the difference.100% Kylie will be 110% performing at The Palais (111 Main Road Hepburn Springs) Saturday, August 4, from 8:30pm. Tickets are $30 + booking fee, or $65 + booking fee (dinner and show, seated 6.30pm) For more information and bookings call: 5348 4849. Hotpants optional.

DAYLESFORD performance group Murmur Collective formed in 2008 to bring to town a contemporary and dynamic theatre experience. Murmur Collective returns to the stage for Words in Winter to present a dramatic reading of When the World Was Green: A Chef’s Fable, by Sam Shepard and Joseph Chaiken. Founding Murmur Collective members Ivor Bowen and Devon Taylor bring the reading to life with video, projections and lighting to add emphasis and drama. This intriguing and unsettling work presents a condemned man’s last thoughts as told to a journalist. Murmur Collective will perform the piece in the multi media room at Door 3, (East Street, Daylesford) nightly: Friday, August 3, till Sunday, August 5 at 7:30pm. Tickets are $15 or $12 concession, and available at the door. For more info go to: facebook.com/murmurcollective.

There once was a town called Daylesford. An Ode.THE BEAUTY of this region has inspired generations of artists to create. Local artist Jodie Fergusson-Batte is no exception and has been busy in her studio, armed with brushes and paints creating her strikingly unique portraits for a special exhibition, ‘An Ode to Daylesford’. The exhibition will be held at Made Gallery (In the historic Raglan building, 1 Camp Street, Daylesford) Friday, August 3, to Sunday, August 26. Jodie’s recognisable works can often be spotted around town, (for example on the walls at the Farmers’ Arms and at Ego’s Culinaria, and indeed on the front cover of the magazine in your hands right now! – HA! Made you look)! You can also spot a Jodie original on the labels of her delicious range of hand blended boutique She-Tea teas, (which can be sipped at many local cafes, and purchased around the traps and online as well. For more info on She-Tea, go to: she-tea.com.au) As part of the ‘An Ode To Daylesford’ exhibition Jodie has invited local poets and wordsmiths to string together a few lines on our wee village. These literary odes to Daylesford will hang alongside Jodie’s works, creating a space that sums up the essence and magic of our special town. You are invited to experience the magic on opening night. Pop in from 6pm Friday, August 3, for glasses of superb local bubbles from Passing Clouds winery, and a preview of the exhibition. Meet the artist and maybe even sus her out about a commissioned piece! An Ode to Daylesford will be open each Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 10am till 5pm. Jodie is also offering tastings of fine local wines from Passing Clouds from 2 till 5pm each day. So you can read the musings of the locals whilst perusing the paintings, over a glass of outstanding local cool climate Sparkling Chardonnay or Pinot. And what could be more ‘Daylesford’ than that? For more information about the exhibition and Jodie’s works, call: 0409 039 263, email at: [email protected] or take a sneak preview of a couple of the pieces at: artbyjodie.com.

Each month your basket will overflow with the most delicious morsels, treats and fresh picked niceties from local farmers and producers of deliciousness. This month the market welcomes a new milk producer to the gang, Inglenook Dairy. Inglenook produces a range of luscious fresh milks, including an unhomogenised cream-top full cream milk – heaven! Peruse the producers and sample the stalls, Bickies, Brews, Breads and Beans. (The primary school is hosting their annual Book Fair on the same day – so be sure to add a book to the afore mentioned list of B things to buy). Beautiful. Tickets are $25 a head. BYO supper and drinks. Organise a table of ten, or more, just remember to wear your dancing shoes! The Book Ball will be held Saturday August 4, 8pm till midnight… when glass slippers will be lost, doormen will turn into mice and chariots into pumpkins. Phone: 5348 1625 for bookings.

Articles, Icicles, Literary featsand feasts - it’s Words in Winter2012 is the National Year of Reading. So if the only pages you’ve managed to turn this year are those of 50 Shades of Grey, it’s time to give your self some real literary lovin’ and immerse yourself in the annual Words In Winter festival. This year’s program (held thoughout Daylesford and surrounding villages) features scores of readings, workshops, signings, events, poetry, bards, plays, odes, songs and lyrics, authors, inspriation, and tall tales and true. There are events for kids, for those who love a yarn, for those who love a crossword, a dance, a game of scrabble. There are even Words in Winter events for those who love a bargain. The official opening will be held Friday, August 3, at the Old Hepburn Hotel (236 Main Road) in an evening of ‘Ballads, Bards and Bushwhackers’ (full details page 20).We are spoilt with some truly inspiring headlining writers heading our way: Lise Rodgers, Shaun Tan, Anne Gleeson, Kerry Greenwood, Ailsa Piper, Tor Roxburgh, Ken Haley, to name a few. These authors will be hosting discussions, workshops, signings and seminars to whet your appetite for knowledge and, yes… to have you yearning to read more. The ABC Open ‘Now and Then’ project is a unique workshop. Bring along a photo of your younger self, be photographed with ‘the Young You’ and write yourself a message. What would you tell a younger version of you? Buy the one way ticket? Listen in school? Don’t drink instant coffee? (Yep, that last one). The ‘Now and Then’ project will be held in Daylesford, Creswick and Clunes. The wonderful gala Book Ball is back (for full details see page 12), as is the Magic Lantern and Music show (from the Museum of Victoria). Of course, the local libraries are all over Words in Winter and are hosting The Clever Town Challenge at Clunes, Creswick, Daylesford, Maryborough, Newstead and Trentham Libraries. It’s town vs town in a battle for all out crossword supremacy! So if you’re not bad on a tricky trivia crossword, lend your knowledge to help your town to the glory of victory! The list of readings, events and workshops, could fill this wee mag, so to discover what else is on, read the full program at: daylesfordonline.com/wordsinwinter.

You can teach an Old Hepnew tricksTHE OLD Hepburn Hotel is home to many a legend. From the outstanding espresso martinis (quality tested by well... us, …um, strictly for research purposes only), to the pub menu the locals love, to the legends the four walls could tell, the Old Hep, as we affectionately know her, is a classic country pub that, quite simply, delivers the goods. For years now, the Old Hepburn Hotel (236 Main Road, Hepburn Springs) has opened the stage to anyone with a tune or something to share. Performance Night is another local legend, and is moving to Friday nights (from Friday, August 3). The very first Performance Night at the new time will be a cracker, when Words in Winter launches with ‘Ballads, Bards and Bushwhackers’. Budding Banjos, Henrys and bush balladeers are invited to take to the mic to perform bush ballads, sing a tune, or recite a favourite poem or yarn you’ve heard along the way. There is limited stage time for this event. To book your time call Nel Staite on: 0437 628 911. The bushwhacking starts at 7pm. Entry to this event is free. For more info about what’s on at the Old Hepburn Hotel, the pub menu and gig guide go to: oldhepburnhotel.com.au or phone: 5348 2207.

More than justa Trivial Pursuit

iClunes 2.0(we love our shiny new book town)NOW that Clunes has racked up super-duper official International Book Town status it’s pulling no punches at Words in Winter this month and showcasing some pretty spekky WIW events. On Sunday, August 12, Clunes plays host to their first ever annual book sale. There’ll be thousands of books on sale from the booksellers of Clunes, priced from $1 to $5. (Back up the ute! Hello!! There are bargains to be had!!) The sale is on from 10am at various Clunes bookshops. For most of the day there will be live music throughout the town, and a sausage sizzle and Devonshire tea at the RSL, (30 Fraser Street) (…Well if you’re loading the ute full of books, you’re going to need some sustenance!) 9:30am-2pm. And once you’ve perused the books and scoffed the scones, a bit of music and poetry could be in order. Roll up to the Nash (The National Hotel, 35 Fraser Street) from 3pm (entry: gold coin donation) where poets and musicians from near and far will take to the open mic to entertain us all over a pot of something cold and beery. Cheers to you Clunes, our beautiful bookish friend.

Who won the 2003 Melbourne Cup? Who won the 2012 Academy Award for best actress? Name three colours on Norway’s flag. Ahh trivia, it fills up our senses like a night in the (…um what was it again*?) Trivia nights bring out the crazed competitor, and the vaults of useless information trapped inside us all. The Daylesford Community Brass Band is hosting a trivia night, Friday, August 17, to raise funds in their 150th year. Rally together your know-it-all mates, and book a table. There’ll be great prizes on offer, and of course the glory of victory up for grabs. (Nothing trivial about that). Hepburn Springs Golf Club (Golf Links Drive) 7:30-10:30pm. Tickets $10, BYO food and drinks. For tickets and info call Shani 0409 954 712. *Answer: Forest – ‘John Denver’. Shhh… don’t tell anyone we knew that!

Literally Literaryin Clunes

Grooves, Grammar, and Wild African AnimalsTHINK QUICK! What’s the collective noun for a herd of zebras? It’s a dazzle. (How great is that?)Local band ZebraHeard weren’t talking collectively when they named their band, they were aiming more along the lines of ‘Listen to what Zebra Heard’… (a-ha! The name of the new album! …See what we did there?).ZebraHeard launch their new album at Horvat’s Wine Bar (Shop 6, Howe Street Daylesford) Saturday, August 18, from 9pm. Check out their unique fusion of futuristic soul grooves, with a bit of electro boogie afro-funk, some spoken word (from Zebra himself) and sweet harmonies thrown in there to boot. (We hear they’re dazzling on stage too... sorry...). For more info on the band go to: zebraheard.com.au or call the venue on: 5348 2333.As always entry to Horvat’s is free.

MELBOURNE author Kerry Greenwood is the creator of the wonderfully glamourous Phryne Fisher 1920s detective novels. Loaded with fashion, intrigue, mystery and a healthy dose of sass, most recently Phryne has graced the small screen in the popular ABC1 series: Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries. Words In Winter welcomes Kerry Greenwood to Clunes, Saturday, August 18, at a special book signing at We’re All About Books, (corner Fraser and Service Streets, from 4pm). Following this, join Kerry at the Clunes Town Hall (Bailey Street) 5:30-7:30pm, for an interesting insight into her life of words. Not only does she have her hands full with Phryne, Kerry has also written award winning children’s books, plays and six non-fiction works. Kerry will discuss writing, life, and everything in between. Sharing the CharcuterieLoveTHE MERE mention of the name ‘Piper Street Food Company’ gets the mouth watering. Kyneton’s Piper Street Food Co (89B Piper Street) was born when Damien Sandercock’s delicious hobby (creating elaborate terrines and French Charcuterie at home) was becoming a bit too expensive… so he decided to sell them. Bless his cotton socks for sharing the terrine love! And it’s more than just the locals singing the praises of his terrines, rillettes and French farmhouse deliciousness…Piper Street Food Co have just landed themselves a couple of very tasty awards. They picked up three Golds and two Silvers at the Royal Melbourne Fine Food Awards, and an Artisan award from Delicious Magazine’s Produce Awards. The artisan medallist award was in the Paddock category for their outstanding pork rillettes and wild rabbit terrine. Hoorah! The Delicious Produce Awards are kinda a big deal. Over 2000 entries are submitted across four categories and the national judges are Australian food royalty, (Maggie Beer, Alla Wolf-Tasker, Matt Moran, Cheong Liew, Philip Johnson and Valli Little) Take a bow Piper Street – (and get ready for our order!) Charcuterie is all about sharing. Terrines, rillettes, pates and parfaits are better with friends – and are created to be shared at picnics, pre-dinner, the races or anywhere really.Piper Street Food Co love to share, so they offer classes once a month to share the tricks involved in creating your own delicious charcuterie. The next charcuterie class will be held Wednesday, August 1, and their French Farmhouse class will be held Saturday, August 25. (Classes are held 10am – 1pm, numbers are limited). Piper Street can arrange private classes for groups, call them to find out more: 5422 3553. They’re open Monday to Friday 9am - 5pm, and Saturday, 9am - 1pm. For their full range and more information go to: piperstfoodco.com.

D.J. J.D.is in da wine bar

Romance is alive and wellin the Western UnionSEAN McMahon’s whirlwind summer romance with a 1930’s Kay parlour guitar turned out to be true love. Whilst travelling through California he fell head over heels with this classic beauty, and returned back to Melbourne, Kay on his arm. Inspired, he penned a collection of songs that would eventually become an album. With Alison Ferrier on violin and harmonies, and Tim Murphy on double bass, Western Union was born. With a little help from the ever excellent songwriter/guitarist Jeff Lang, the album Live at the Last Hotel was complete. Western Union are taking the romance on the road and touring the resulting heartfelt alt country tunes around South Oz and Victoria, including a show at Horvat’s Wine Bar (Shop 6, Howe Street, Daylesford) Friday, August 24. Entry is free. For more info go to: westernunionsongs.com.

HORVAT’S Wine Bar is an intimate little music venue in Daylesford (Shop 6, Howe Street) that fills every Friday, Saturday and Sunday night with live tunes and DJ sets from amazing local musos from two minutes down the road, to international guests who flew 22 hours to be here – bless em). Sunday sessions are pretty chilled until the DJ comes on at 10pm. Sunday, August 19, local DJ Jenni Daggers will fill the floor with a mix of funky breaks, with a salsa vibe and some afro dance. Jenni has been DJing since the vinyl days and has a Melbourne club and festival pedigree (including ChillOut, Earthcore, and Barmah Beats) and a music knowledge that would impress even Molly Meldrum, in fact, there’s every chance that Jenni’s sets have had him on the floor too. Free entry. More info: horvatwines.com.

A fanTASMAgoricaljob opportunity

The Word Mine(no exploration licence required)TRADITIONALLY, August is Words in Winter time. However, there’s a renegade bunch of readers and writers in Castlemaine who celebrate words and books and literature and lyrics all year round! Castlemaine Word Mine hosts monthly readings on the last Wednesday of the month, at the Anglican Church Hall (corner Forest and Kennedy Streets). This month (Wednesday, August 29, from 8pm), you’re invited to meet and mingle with other local writers, and to read your work to a captive audience. And in August, the Word Mine welcomes guest speakers: Melbourne poet and sound performer Klare Lanson and much loved writer Anna Hedigan to the mic. BYO beverages, (they supply glasses – very thoughtful!), and a book you’ve finished with, to swap for another. Entry is by gold coin donation. For more info go to: castlemainewordmine.wordpress.com.

FOR DECADES families, friends, couples and groups have gathered, celebrated, relaxed and recharged at the picturesque Tasma House and Gardens, (Table Hill Road, Daylesford). Now Tasma House is entering a new phase in its life, and is looking for a very special person (or people) to work with them as a Producer in Residence. This gig is a six month residency as part of artsHub’s exciting new Hub Project. It’s the ultimate arty gig. Setting up and running a residential music and/or arts retreat program. (How good would that be!?) The plan is to have these retreats up and running Tuesdays-Thursdays throughout the residency. If you think this sounds like you, read all the details at artshub.com.au (go to What’s On/The Hub Project). Toot sweet inspired creative peeps - Entries close Friday, August 24. For more info on Tasma House go to: tasmahouse.com

Of Flowers and FerretsKyneton is DaffodeliciousAUGUST. We’re past half way folks! Just as July signals the equivalent monthy-annual-thing to Wednesday’s weekly hump day, August feels as if the long, oh-so-sweet slide to summer has begun. We’re sure we’re not just dreaming it, there’s an undeniable waft of spring in the air, (isn’t there?) Early blossom is teasing us with colour and fragrance, there are buds hanging off every twig in town just busting for those warm September rays to give them the okay to unfurl. But it’s the bulbs that have really thrown back the dormant winter doona on the garden beds ‘round town. Oh yes. It’s that time of year. Bring on the daffodils. From Thursday, August 30, to Sunday, September 9, Kyneton celebrates spring and everyone’s favourite bulb with the Kyneton Daffodil and Arts Festival. This year marks the 40th year of the festival and the program is more than just ooh-ing and ahh-ing over those happy trumpety-like blooms. It encompasses the arts, fabulous gardens (of course), flower shows, (um, of course, again) local providores and vignerons, a glittering old-time ball, and some good ol fashioned country hospitality and fun. Kyneton will be ablaze with the golden bulb, with no less than twenty two local gardens open for display. The arts program features a series of one act plays, literary events, buskers, and a variety spectacular, with many local and renown artists on the bill. But it wouldn’t be the Kyneton Daffodil and Arts Festival without a certain event that has the township counting down the days… The Annual Ferret Race. Yes, nothing says daffodils like ferret racing, and you can be sure the furry four legged fiends will have their cute(?) little game faces on before the big event. Game on moles… um, sorry… ferrets. For the full festival program, including dates, times and ticket details go to: kynetondaffodilarts.org.au or call: 5422 2282.

Movies, Mulled Wine...and I see a ray of SunshineJUST because August is the last month of winter, it doesn’t mean the Magic Sun Switch is flicked on September 1 and we all get sunburnt. Ohh no, we’ll be polar fleecing it up until the Spring Racing carnival ‘round here… (No beanies on Oaks Day, we promise). The winter leaves us longing for warmth, and the glorious Theatre Royal Castlemaine (30 Hargraves Street) delivers it by the glassful with Mulled Wine Wednesdays. (Thank you). They also serve Wednesday winter dinners for $10, and if you have a mulled wine too many, you can stay the night at the Backstage B&B, located just behind the silver screen. It’s tiny and toasty and oh-so-cosy. For what’s on at the Theatre Royal, Warm Wednesday Evenings, and The Backstage B&B, visit: theatreroyal.info or phone: 5472 1196.

COMING home to a case of wine on the doorstep makes you feel partly extravagant, but mostly awesome... Coming home to a case of wine on the doorstep from Goodwill Wines makes you feel a bit like the above, but mostly akin to a saint. Goodwill Wines is a licensed fundraiser, and pledges 50% of the profit from the sale of their wines to a charity or non-profit organisation of your choice. Cheers to that we say! They source high quality boutique Australian wines, (no bulk cheap stuff… eww… cheers again) and sell it to you at decent prices. Once you’ve read through how it all works and chosen the charitable organisation you’ll pledge your donation to, (if in doubt, pick our local lovelies Hepburn Wildlife Shelter… go on, they really are saints)! Then all you have to do is make your choice of wine from some great big red vintages, classic blends, delish whites, and bubbles… and wait till the happy day the delivery man drops it off on your doormat… (And polish your halo… gosh it’s tough work being charitable). Here’s cheers to good health, to good vibes, to good will. It’s all good really. More info: goodwillwine.com.au

Brushing off Winter...with a Kolinsky Sable

Who doesn’t lovean afternoon on the tilesOKAY, admit it… you’re still playing Words With Friends (with randoms) while everyone else has already moved on from Draw Something. You know K=5, and the clatter of those little cream tiles tipping out of the box gives you a thrill. Unabashed Scrabblers: get your eyes in the dictionary. Words in Winter is hosting Scrabble games as part of the Australian Scrabble Players’ Association, Victorian Country Championships. Anyone of any age or skill level is invited to try to triple-word-score their way to glory. Saturday, August 4, 10am till 4pm, at Daylesford Bowling Club, (8 Camp Street). But if you prefer your Scrabble with wine, Welshman’s Reef Winery (Newstead-Maldon Rd, Welshman’s Reef) is hosting Scrabble afternoons every Sunday this month from 2pm, BYO lucky Scrabble set, or phone David to lock in a game. 0428 310 825. All events are F.R.E.E. (7 points).

WE REALISE it’s August… but let’s think forward three months to glorious November… An entire month dedicated to sunshine, horsies, warm bare skin and late sunsets… *sigh* - November also stars the annual Daylesford Rotarian Art Show. It was the most successful regional art show in Victoria last year, with 220 paintings displayed, and a quarter of works selling in four days... Nice one. Right, let’s snap you back to Winter. (sorry). The fog, frost and grey is a great time to hide out in your studio and whip up an entry for the show. Not only are there eight prizes on offer, it’s also a brilliant opportunity to get your work out there. So it’s time to brush off the brushes and unearth the easel, and get cracking on a masterpiece. (You’ve got three months, tick tock!) Entry is now open, for details, deadlines and forms contact Karen or Warren Moloney: 5348 1451, or [email protected].

r u r a l c o u t u r e

A colourful guide to the fabulously stylish and well designed life in Daylesford. BREATHE. RELAX. LAUGH. AND BREATHE AGAIN.

What’s Trending...Spa + BeautyTop 5 Spa Holiday trends of 2012

Country Massage in VogueI arrived at Leggatt House. The newest massage studio in town. Overlooking Daylesford Lake, Leggatt House was recently purchased by lifestyle enthusiast, artist and professional builder, Karen Waugh-Raphael. In the middle of restoring this historic country Manor, Karen has turned the front of house into a therapeutic Massage Studio.

Daylesford “Makeover Me”…Spa Hopping to fabulous!I floated out the door, waving goodbye to Andrea, Angela and Lisa, with promises of “I’ll write” and a handbag full with DayDay’s own miracle concoctions of body butter and moisturisers. Also some Jurlique Lavender shampoo and conditioner…they’re a wee summer holiday in Provence for your hair.

You’d think in such a precarious financial world that spa holidays would have fallen to the bottom of Must Have/Do lists. Quite the reverse actually.Holidays are trending as one of the treasured treats of stressed and weary recession survivors. Sort of like their “I Will Survive” remedy to heal past ills and lessen future pains.
