The Hachi Family: +1 Awareness

The Hachi were a small family of sharp witted samurai, led by the five matriarchs descended from

the founders of the Clan. Most dedicated their lives to the arts, and to their deeper meanins. They

were in their natural element in the hihest courts of !o"uan.

Hachi Courtier School

Althouh it was difficult to reali#e at times, the Hachi were truly passionate about the arts. They

saw the ability to create deeper meanin out of mundane means as the reatest s"ill of man"ind,

a"in to maic and a ift from the $ortunes. %ut this also meant they hated to see mediocrity,

considerin it an offense to the &ami and a stain on one's honor. As such, the Hachi became

merciless courtiers, travellin the courts of !o"uan to dispense their (udements, li"e maistrates

of the fine arts. This ave them sinificant political clout which, true to their Crane heritae, they

never hesitated to use to solidify their position in the )mpire.

!an" 1: The tin of the %ee

The first thin a %ee samurai learn is how to properly critici#e art, findin the smallest of flaws in

any wor". !are is the samurai who can measure up to their standards, but for those their reputation

is assured. 7ou ain a +8"9 bonus to all -ames: adane rolls, and to any Artisan or *erform rolls

Members of the Hachi $amily are a tihtly "nit roup, and althouh their activities often cause them

to be separated they "ept contact throuh e4tended correspondence. >sin the flowery lanuae of

the arts, the %ee were able to communicate information to one another, hidden even to those who

miht read their letters. %y writin a letter and succeedin at a Calliraphy;ntellience T< 89 roll,

the Hachi Courtier can re/uest information from another member of the $amily. The letter cannot

be fully understood by anyone who doesn't have access to this techni/ue ? the metaphors used are

uni/ue to the %ee Clan. The information usually pertains to the arts and fashion, such as upcominnew trends, the rise and decline of specific artists, or the location of performer roups. The

information can ta"e from one to four wee"s to come, but once obtained can provide a +="9 one

time bonus on a roll related to it, such as reviewin a piece of art related to the new trend or

obtainin favors throuh showcasin a popular artist.

!an" @: hatter the )o

At this ran", the Hachi courtier learns how to completely destroy the confidence of a samurai based

on his wor"s or representation. %y succeedin at a roll of the appropriate artisan or performance

s"ill;Awareness, at a T< e/ual to the roll used to create the wor" or performance, the Hachi

Courtier can spend a oid point to activate this techni/ue. erbally pointin out the flaws of the performance or wor", and throuh it of the performer or artisan, causes him to suffer from a B8"9

penalty on all further social s"ill rolls the same day, and prevents him from spendin oid points on

social s"ill rolls.

!an" 2: %eyond the eil

The most senior members of the %ee Clan loo" for those rare displays of artistic s"ill which can be

considered perfect. $or those so attuned to the deeper meanin of the arts, such a siht can be a"in

to a temporary moment of enlihtenment, allowin them to see everythin around them more

clearly. >pon witnessin a wor" of art or performance accomplished with at least 2 raises, the Hachi

Courtier can roll the appropriate artisan or performance s"ill;oid, at a T< of 82. f successful the

Courtier recovers all spent oid points, and ains three e4tra oid points on top of his ma4imum.

Those three oid points disappear if not used by the end of the day, and this techni/ue cannot be

used more than once a day.

The Karasu Family: +1 tamina

haped by a touh e4istence as warriors and rued, inhospitable homelands, the &arasu were a

hardy people. Taciturn, and hardBwor"in warriors, they would fre/uently travel across the lenth of

the )mpire to find honourable employment as mercenaries, usually in service to one of the -reat

Clans. They reversed most of their profits to the %rotherhood of hinsei, content to live a life offruality and service.

Karasu Bushi School

The !aven Clan thouht that as samurai, war was their duty and if war wouldn't find them, then

would find war. <ot that they were chasin honor or lory, but they simply saw it as their role in the

world.

This didn't mean they couldn't positively impact the )mpire thouh, and by contributin to the

%rotherhood of hinsei, they souht to create a more harmonious empire, both in this world and the

ne4t. Trained in a wide variety of weapons, the !aven were danerous foes, for what they lac"ed in

refinement was made up by years of continued fihtin e4perience.

!an" 1: 5inds of 5ar

A youn &arasu bushi learns that there are many ways to wae war, but li"e many thins in lifethey are an illusion, and are in fact all one. 7ou ain +1"9 to all your attac" rolls, reardless of what

weapon you are usin. This also applies to unarmed and raned attac"s.

always be on uard, and to stri"e hard once the fiht beins. 7ou ain +8"9 to all rolls to avoid

bein surprised. $urthermore, you can add +8"9 to your first damae roll in each fiht, reardless of

what weapon you are usin, or even if unarmed or usin improvised or raned weapons.

!an" =: The !aven's 5ins

At this point the !aven beins to better understand how all moves flow into a sinle one, and is able

to attac" his enemies from many directions at once. 7ou can attac" as a simple action when usin

one of your school s"ills, includin "yu(utsu and (iu(utsu.

!an" @: The $ortunes' %lessin

5hile mercenaries, the !aven believe they are doin their duty by wain wars for the other Clans

in service to the )mpire. This faith carries them throuh many battles, enablin them to push

themselves further than other samurai would. 7ou can reduce all your wound penalties by anamount e/ual to your 0ore: Theoloy s"ill ran".

!an" 2: <o More 0iht

This danerous and cruel techni/ue has been said to have been told to &arasu himself by a mon",

who had abandoned the blade after usin it only once. t allows a !aven samurai to slice at his

opponent's eyes, causin blindness and e4cruciatin pain. To activate it, the &arasu bushi must first

spend a oid point, then succeed on an attac" roll with three raises. f successful, the taret is

blinded for the reminder of the combat. Additionally, unless the taret succeeds at a T< 89

5illpower they are unable to fiht, and are considered to be at the Down wound ran" until they

receive some help. 5ith five raises, instead of three, the taret permanently ac/uires the %linddisadvantae, and the T< of the 5illpower to remain standin is now T<=9. At the -M's

discretion, usae of this techni/ue can cause an honor loss if inappropriate, such as in a first blood

5hen the mysterious man only "nown as iro#ame recruited followers for his Clan, there didn't

seem to be much those samurai had in common. %ut soon it became apparent that the har" samurai

were all brilliant "illers, if totally devoid of any empathy. Thus the iro#ame /uic"ly athered adanerous reputation, which often prevented retribution for their debauched habits.

The Jirozame Bushi School

5hile his oriins remained a mystery for all, iro#ame seemed to have received e4tensive trainin

in both "en(utsu and iai(utsu, and passed those talents on to his followers. The oriinal iro#ame

samurai were often talented warriors themselves, and honed their s"ills by EraidinF villaes outside

their own territory, somewhat li"e leitimi#ed bandits. Those samurai brave enouh to face them

found the har" to be obsessed with the demise of their opponents, with no concerns for their own

safety. 5hile s"illed with the "atana and in duels, the iro#ame particularly en(oyed usin the noB

5hile many schools cover topics such as first blood duellin and how to disable an opponent

!an" 2: Death Comes

The iro#ame's disdain for life e4tends both to themselves and their enemies. Those who fully

embrace their philosophy are capable of launchin near suicidal assaults, almost always resultin in

death ? of one fihter or the other. 7ou can activate this techni/ue before initiative is rolled for a

However, your armor T< is reduced to 2 for the entire first round of the fiht. This techni/ue cannot

The Hitokage Shugenja School

5hen he started to orani#e his Clan, Hito"ae refused to adopt the traditional model which other

shuen(a school employ. nstead of focusin on one area of maic or a specific element, Hito"ae

encourae his students to diversify themselves, and to learn the basics of all elements. 5ithout the

resources of the *hoeni4 Clan, this proved difficult, but Hito"ae eventually found a balanced

The Hotaru Family: +1 *erception

The Hotaru $amily was always a small one, even for a Minor Clan, as the Clan Champions were

always careful not to overta4 the resources of their small *rovince. However, this was more than

enouh for them to "eep viil over the coast, and for a few individuals to lend their services as

maistrates, scouts or uards in the )mpire.

The Hotaru Bushi School

The techni/ues of the Hotaru bushi school were in lare part shaped by Hotaru 3shio, Hotaruainu's first yori"i. A ronin who had studied the blade for his whole life, 3shio relished the

opportunity to formali#e his style and teach it to a new eneration as part of a Minor Clan. 3shio

had a similar temper to the Clan founder's, and preferred observation to rushed attac"s. His

techni/ues focused on studyin the enemy's style, and adaptin to it, only stri"in when the time

was riht. Althouh not as aressive as other chools, the $irefly style of fihtin served the Clan

well in their various duties. ainu also contributed to the chool whenever he could, and it shows

anyone to interpret it as a sin of softness.

The Tanuki Bushi SchoolThe ma(ority of samurai thouht the Tanu"i were somewhere between lunatics and buffoons,

pointin to their lare consumption of alcohol and odd superstitions, such as never oin outside

without wearin a broad straw hat, or bowin to the tanu"i effiies at the entrance of their home

when comin in. A small minority thouht their e4plorations were bearin fruit thouh, and found

the hinomen $orest to be a somewhat safer place in their presence. The Tanu"i never seemed to

care much for any opinion, preferrin their forest e4peditions to discover more about the spirits

hidin there, and the parties they held after such trips. To protect themselves, they developed an odd

&incho is a man of refined tastes and considers himself a true e4pert on sa"e. After visitin many

sa"e houses across the entirety of !o"uan with his father, &incho the $ifth, &incho has come tothe escapable conclusion that !o"uan samurai are missin out on somethin truly sublime. Most

samurai only ever et to en(oy the reional blends of sa"e and miss out on some of life's most truly

However, rumors persist that some of the finest sa"e masters of the different clans, ranin from the

Crab, >nicorn, and Draon, have made pilrimaes to the establishment. f this is true, &incho is

The *eacoc" Clan

Thouh its humble foundations bean hundreds of years ao durin the rein of the 1Nth Hantei

)mperor, the proud and noble *eacoc" Clan has served every dynasty that has ever sat on the throne

clan ta"es very seriously and has lead to its near e4tinction more then a few times in tumultuous

history. Durin the corpion Clan Coup, the Clan Champion at the time &u(a"u Ha"anai died

aainst corpion conspirators while defendin the peacoc" pens in the mperial aviary "nown as

The !ihteous un. n response to this act of heroism, the corpion nearly slauhtered all the

peacoc"s. 0uc"ily Ha"anai's son, ochi had spirited away four pairs of the lovely birds durin the

confusion to preserve the interity of the family and clan. Thouht to have been destroyed by manydurin the Coup, the remnants of the Clan stayed in hidin throuhout the Clan 5ar and only

reappeared on the day of the coronation of Toturi . The empire re(oiced when &u(a"u ochi

appeared in the throneBroom with more then a do#en peacoc"s, those four he spirited away had been

/uite busy, and the *eacoc" Clan was reborn. t was durin the subse/uent $our 5inds aa that

the clan nearly faced e4tinction aain, when Daiotsu attac"ed and ra#ed 3tosan >chi and the

members of the clan struled to save the )mperors precious peacoc"s. The clan and the peacoc"s

manaed to survive this traedy only to have their ood name and deeds stripped from them when

the current Champion at the time, &u(a"u Tansei, drun"enly declared his love for Toturi Tsudao in

her presence while meetin her and her entourae in the House of the %lue Tanu"i after the

harrowin attac" on the former capital. This act was perceived as crude and illBtimed and Tsudao, in

her first act as )mpress, too" their clan status away. Thouh shamed, the former clan went into

hidin in the frines of the )mpire ta"in the pri#ed peacoc"s with them. t would not be until

decades later that the *eacoc" Clan would come into fame aain with the coronation of we"o .

The Clan presented the new )mpress and her dynasty with two olden peacoc"s, the rarest of the

rare, and cemented their loyalty to the new power on the throne and with that hopes of reinstatement

as a clan.
