What the Pros like in Golf ballsGolfInG TIPs

Some pros like the Titleist Pro V1 golf ball for many reasons, the most important being that it was designed specifically with the pro in mind. It is the golf ball of choice for such pros as Mike Weir, Fred Funk, and David Toms.

This ball is described by the manufacturer as a soft ball with a 1.550” diameter core formulation. Other features include a speed-enhancing, spin controlling ionomer casing, with a 0.30” urethane cover, plus 392-count dimple coverage in an icosahedral or 20-faced design. The pros on the PGA circuit put tremendous energy into their explosive shots on the tee and fairway for days at a time, and need a ball like this to meet their standards.

Golf balls designed for the pros, such as the Titleist Pro V1, which has a soft, thin cover and costs about $60 for a dozen balls. Contrast that price with what you would be paying for a lesser ball, but one that could certainly be a good ball for your game, such as the Srixon HiSpin, priced about $15 per dozen, or the Maxfli A3 for about $25 per dozen.

If you’d like to know what the pros look for in a golf ball, keep in mind that the characteristics of all golf balls are strictly governed by the rules laid down by the U.S. Golf Association. It is these rules that determine maximum initial velocity, total distance, and all the other features advertised by manufacturers.

Years ago in the Golf Digest Schools, Bob Toski showed me a way to teach students how the weight distribution was distinctly different between the irons and the driver, dictated by the fact that the ball is on the ground for irons versus on a tee for the driver.

Bob, who advocated active feet throughout the swing, gave students the left-foot/right-toe drill for irons (the right foot up on it’s toe) and the right-foot/left-toe drill for the driver.

These drills put your body in the best position for swinging the club on the correct angle of approach to make solid contact. They also give you a feeling for how your eyes should look at the ball: With irons, look at the front of the ball; with the driver, look at the back. When you’re on the range, do each drill five times between regular swings.

flICK’s WoRDs of WIsDoMSpin is huge in many sports, but it’s paramount in golf. Hale Irwin told me that he always watched how his ball bounced after it hit the ground because that gave him an indication of the ball’s spin. It was more feedback than simply watching the ball in flight. If his drives bounced a little left upon landing, he was probably imparting a slight bit of hook spin, and vice versa. Sam Snead told me something similar: He paid close attention to how his shots landed and rolled, especially on the range.

On September 25, 1974, during the second round of the U.S. National Seniors Open Championship at the Winterwood course in Las Vegas, PGA Professional Mike Austin stepped up to the 450 yard, par four fifth hole. His playing partner that day was former PGA champion Chandler Harper. Harper, impressed with Austin’s length off the tee, urged him to really let one go. Austin’s drive landed within a yard of the green, then rolled 65 yards past the flag. Though he was aided by a 30 mile per hour tailwind,Austin drove the ball 515 yards, the greatest recorded drive in tournament history. His driver went to the hall of fame and his tee shot to the Guinness Book of World Records. He was 64 years old at the time.

We all yearn to achieve more distance off the tee. Many of us believe that, as women, we just don’t have the power to drive the ball as far as our male counterparts.Yet Michelle Wie, a 14 year old from Hawaii, is out-driving PGA professionals by 30 yards or more. How does Wie, or a 64 year old senior tour player, for that matter, manage to hit the ball so far?

Muscular power depends on the amount of energy available and the time taken to expend it. It is really about the amount of weight moved and the time involved to move it.

Why is this relevant to the golf swing? Simply put, you can and should move during your golf swing. You can and will hit the ball farther, with less effort, if you pivot properly. This movement, coupled with good hand action (release), will help you retain the accuracy you also need. Mike Austin, my teacher and dear friend of 15 years, has helped me to understand and use these principles. In this article, I am paying that knowledge forward.

It’s ok to move The modern golf swing seems to be all about rotation.Torque, twist, turn, X-factor—these are all buzz words that are commonly given as the answer to a powerful swing. I believe these things can create substantial

power, but done alone, can also cause injuries to the body. However, by allowing some lateral movement, golfers can reduce the stress on the back and joints, freeing up the chest and shoulders to turn. By shifting and turning together (movement/compound pivot), we can create both power and accuracy. Movement, after all, is natural, athletic and rhythmic: all characteristics we should strive for in our swings.

What about swaying? I can appreciate the concern about lateral movement in the swing. We have all been warned of the dangers of “swaying” instead of turning. However, if your swing is a result of a good kinetic chain (the muscle groups in the body working in a series or order of movement, together) and you utilize a compound pivot, I think you will come to believe in movement.

The swing center is a point located in the upper spine around which the upper body rotates as you swing the club. If this center point remains in a steady position with the least possible movement, you will maintain clubhead speed, and your contact with the ball will improve. In order to keep the swing center still, we must learn to maintain the balanced forward tilt of our spine (until well after the hit is complete) while we allow the lower spine to tilt left and right in the lateral direction.

This lateral motion is vital. It shifts the weight from one foot to the other, getting the body weight behind the golf ball on the backswing, and allows us to use our legs and trunk muscles more efficiently.

The compound pivot A good pivot is a compound action: a

shift-turn-shift-turn sequence. Many times, it can seem like an expert player is only turning, because this pivot sequence is happening in such a small amount of space. Upon closer examination, you will see that the most efficient swings incorporate a two-legged balanced start, shifting to a one-legged, balanced top swing position to a one-legged, balanced finish position. Basically, you are creating a right side “pole” or axis that frees the left side to turn behind the golf ball (imagine a swinging gate). This not only gives more time for the club to get to the top of the back-swing, it also permits a good chest and shoulder turn.

Get a running start As it is in the backswing, the forward swing is simply a weight shift, this time from the right foot to the left foot, with a turn through to a balanced fin-ish.This includes an assertive “drive” or “kick” with your right leg to shift the weight to your left and to get a “running start” at the golf ball, creating

optimal clubhead speed. In almost all sports that involve throwing or striking, the athlete makes a “running start” of sorts. Not only does this legwork provide additional club speed in the golf swing, but it also gives you the benefit of maintaining your balance as your arms swing forward.

The head may move some during this motion, but it should not move in such a way that the movement resembles a metronome. In fact, the quieter you can keep your swing center, the better contact you’ll make. When only the hips turn, your head will likely sway. If you tilt your hips up and down as you turn turn, you will have completed the compound pivot and be in an ideal position to throw the club at the ball, around a circle, with your hands. Imagine a softball pitch and throw the clubhead in an underhand motion with the right hand as you unfold your right elbow. Doing this creates magnificent clubhead speed, utilizing the full effects of gravity. To throw, you must move, step and throw.

A balanced setup sets the stage for an athletic swing. A right side “pole” frees the left side to turn behind the ball.

less pain, more gain Students who learn to swing a golf club by learning to pivot first are on their way to an efficient and consistent golf swing. These things, coupled with less strain and pain in the body, have convinced my students that this is the way to go. Movement is allowed in the golf swing. Learn to pivot and hit the ball like an athlete!

a neW HoPe foR CanCeRFew things strike terror into the hearts of men and women more than the dreaded diagnosis of cancer. A disease once considered to be the plague of the elderly, cancer shows no mercy when selecting its victims. It is now also the leading cause of death in children.

The war against cancer has been going on for years with billions of dollars being spent in search of its cure. While the cure has not yet been discovered, discriminating patients, unwilling to accept the traditional brutal cancer treatments, can find healthier alternatives to the conventional three modalities: surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. While these treatments have been effective in killing cancer cells, they often have devastating side effects including disfigurement, nausea, hair loss, impotence, incontinence, destruction of the immune system and premature aging and death. Far lesser known but FDA and HCFA approved since 1984, Hyperthermia became the 4th Cancer modality in 1985.

The term Hyperthermia comes from the Greek word HYPER (“to raise”) and THERME (“to heat”). Its roots go back to 5,000 B.C. when Egyptian doctors treated tumors with heat. For years, scientists have known that cancer cells are more sensitive to heat than normal cells, and that high temperatures cause cancer cells to break down. After decades of dedicated work, devoted medical professionals could finally provide a cohesive body of clinical research and testing that allowed hyperthermia to gain legal status as an approved medical procedure by the FDA and be covered by most insurance carriers.

Taking the treatment’s cue from Nature, which uses fever as the primary healing measure for the human body, medical professionals researched and helped to initiate the specialized machinery and tools to apply heat to the diseased areas without harming healthy tissue.

When combined with low-dose-radiation, Hyperthermia increases the blood flow to the tumor. This raises the oxygen levels and enables the radiation to dramatically improve the response rates. Published medical literature/statistics indicate that when cancer is treated with radiation alone, the improvement rates were only 33 %. When combined with hyperthermia the beneficial response accelerated to 67%, making the treatment more than twice as effective.

Additionally, Hyperthermia has been found to substantially reduce pain in the majority of patients with virtually no side effects. Effective treatable cancer sites that respond well to Hyperthermia include: breast cancer, inflammatory breast cancer (a deadly type which responds poorly to conventional therapies of surgery, chemotherapy or radiation), prostate cancer, head and neck cancer, base of the tongue cancer and other superficial tumors.

It is time to arm cancer patients with knowledge and to educate them on the various modes of treatment so that they know of this simple, non-toxic, painless procedure available to them that does not diminish their present-day-lifestyle or quality of life.

Tell me something most people don’t know about you. I am coming out with an ANNIKA wine label which will be a high-end Syrah in partnership with Wente Vineyards. We’ll start with a limited production of around 600 cases sold mostly directly to consumers in the first year. I am also coming out with an ANNIKA Fragrance in partnership with SA Fragrances. Both are due out by Mother’s Day next year.6. Who is the most frequently dialed person in your cell phone call log? Probably Mike, but if I’m with him I call the Academy and my employees to check in with them. I tray to Skype my parents and sister a few times a week from the road as well.7. What was your first job? Besides picking up golf balls on the range when I was a little girl, I worked at the Swedish PGA. I was 19 years old and I loved it! I answered the phones, helped with tournaments and did odd jobs. I created a work plan and spreadsheets that they hadn’t seen. When it came time for them to compensate me, I told them I wanted a “yardage wheel”. Back then, they didn’t have lasers to shoot distances, so you rolled the wheel to mark off courses.8. What do you usually eat for breakfast before your round? I have juice and tea, cereal, fruit, yogurt, toast, and maybe an omelet. I love breakfast!9. What is your favorite activity you do when you want to relax? I love being home. To me, the ultimate relaxation is being home with Mike, my three babies (cats), family and friends. That to me is a good as it gets.

PHIl MICKelson’sshort-Game Clinic

The happy golfer is the one who's getting better. Fortunately, there are many ways to boost your game, from practicing harder to making a swing change to finding the one tip that makes everything click. On the following pages we'll give you plenty to get happy about.

Leading the charge this year is Phil Mickelson. Phil has been a leading pro for many years, so he knows a thing or two about how we try to help golfers like you.

He's also pretty keen around the greens, so we asked him to reveal the short-game secrets that have made him a guy the other pros watch. Phil's coach. Butch Harmon, adds his favorite full-swing tips. Finally, we asked PGA Tour players to tell us how they improved in areas the stats said were holding them back. What worked for them might be just what you need. Remember you have to find the best route for you to improve your game. And be happy.

basIC ConCePTs CoMe fIRsTA solid game from 50 yards and in is all about following a small set of basic principles. Excel at them, and you'll be able to pull off almost any shot.

The first principle is what I call "hinge and hold." For crisp contact and good distance control on all greenside shots, hinge your wrists very early on the backswing and avoid swinging your lead arm back more than necessary. On the downswing, feel like you maintain the hinge, so your hands remain ahead of the clubhead for a descending strike.

bUTCH on ball PosITIonThe average golfer plays the ball too far forward with the driver. This causes the shoulders and hips to shift open, and the right arm to get too straight. From there, the player swings the club back steeply and to the outside. Plus, the backswing turn is restricted. To position the ball correctly with the driver, line it up with the breast logo on your shirt, or just inside your left heel.

KeeP THe HanDs MovInGAnother key principle is to accelerate your hands on the downswing and keep accelerating them toward the target until well after the ball is gone. Slowing your hands is a killer because it ruins your release, changes impact conditions and often causes you to hit the shot fat. A related concept is to maintain the loft

(continued from page 43)

of your wedge through impact and beyond, the face aimed at the sky for as long as possible. I want to keep the same clubface loft I established at address.

bUTCH on WeIGHT sHIfT & on GeTTInG baCKHere’s a good rule: Your weight should always move in the same direction as the club. When the club swings back, your weight moves back; when the club swings through, your weight moves through. Many amateurs hit the ball with their weight falling away from the target, which leads to contact behind the ball or cutting across it. Many golfers swing back too far, causing the arms to collapse. Your arm swing should stop when your body stops turning back; that’ll keep everything in sequence. If the arms overswing, they have to catch up later, and most golfers can’t do that consistently. Try this thought to avoid a long, loose backswing: Keep the hands away from the head at the top.

a 3-sTeP GUIDe To THe seTUPI’ve followed the same short-game setup formula for years, and I think it will help every player’s consistency:

(1) Align your feet and the clubface square to the target.

(2) Rotate the clubface open until you establish sufficient loft for the shot you’re playing. Remember to regrip the club after you open the face, so you don’t simply rotate your hands and “fake” the open clubface.

(3) Rotate your stance and upper body open until the face is aimed at the target and make your normal swing.

sHoRT PUTTs: THInK 25-75On shorter putts you must accelerate the putter through the ball and impart a smooth, true roll. Try to make your backstroke shorter than your follow-through. The stroke should break down as 25 percent back and 75 percent through, though it varies slightly depending on the length of the putt. As for obtaining a true roll, avoid hitting down on the ball or catching it on the upswing. You want the putterhead moving level, with the shaft angle at impact the same as it was at address.

stay on the links by Preventing Golf InjuriesGolfer’s, whether they are professionals, amateurs or weekend warriors, are all at risk for injury due to the stress placed on several parts of the body during the golf swing.

The most common golf injuries occur in the lower back, shoulders, elbows, wrists and hands, and are generally defined as either overuse or traumatic injuries.Professionals generally suffer injuries as a result of overuse, and amateursare often injured due to a lack of fitness and flexibility. Injuries may also arise from improper techniques, especially with swing mechanics or technical errors near impact.

One of the most common complaints amongst both professional and amateur golfers is low back pain. Lumbar pain can occur as a result of the powerful rotation and extension motion in the golf swing. These rotational stresses of the golf swing can place considerable pressure on the spine and muscles. Tight coiling of the upper body against the stable lower body leaves the golfer vulnerable to muscle injuries at the top of the swing, while excessive twisting with inadequate muscle support core muscle strength both contribute to increased forces on the facet joints of the spine, leading to degeneration over time.

The second leading golfing injury is to the elbow. One of the best ways to avoid elbow problems is to strengthen the forearm muscles and slow the swing so that there will be less shock in the arm when the ball is hit by the golfer. There are two types of elbow problems: medical and lateral epicondylitis. Lateral epicondylitis or tennis elbow is also the most common elbow problem in golfers. It occurs on the outside arm, whereas medial epicondylitis or golfer’s elbow occurs on the inside arm. Golfers who grip the club too tightly or who “smash” the ball are most likely to suffer this injury.

Other parts of the body that can be injured in golf are the wrists and hands. Because the golf swing concludes with the impact of the golf club and the ball a “shock” is generated. This “shock” is a result of the sudden loss of club head speed and puts a great strain on the wrists. Contact of the club face with the ground naturally occurs during the swing. A controlled swing removes just a bit of the turf, whereas a less controlled swing digs deeper into the ground, increasing the force of the “shock” transmitted to the wrists and hands. Wrist injuries can also result from excessive hand motion during the backswing and downswing.

Shoulder pain in golfers is usually caused by overuse rather than any specific component of the swing itself. The golf swing causes chronic wear and tear injuries to the muscles holding the shoulder inside its socket. Muscle and tendon tears heal and create scar tissue which can make movement

increasingly painful. The lead shoulder (left in a right handed golfer, right for the left handed golfer) is subjected to the most stress during the swing, so it is not uncommon for golfers to develop rotator cuff tears, or other problems in the shoulder blade suck as impingement or arthrosis (joint disease). There is some indication that most shoulder injuries are actually due to an excessive swing, and that in particular an exaggerated backswing is often the source of the problem.

Attention to proper swing technique, proper club fitting, and improved overall fitness can help the average golfer avoid these injuries. Seeking a golf professional is important in choosing golf equipment for your skill level and body-type, as well as analyzing and improving your swing technique if necessary.

Studies have shown that warm-up routines lasting more than 10 minutes tend to decrease the incidence of golf injury. Before you start playing, warm up your muscles with stretching exercises. Your back, shoulders and arm muscles especially need to loosen up and warm up before you take your first swing. Start out at the driving range and hit a few balls with your short irons to prepare before you head out on the green.

Golf injuries can easily become chronic as a result of continued activity, by not getting adequate rest or ignoring the early warning signs of an injury, To be successful at golf, you need functional strength, flexibility, endurance, coordination, finesse and timing. Consultation with a physical therapist can assist you with treating existing injuries and preventing new ones. A physical therapist will also develop an individualized exercise program that includes core strengthening, stretching, and strengthening all major muscle groups can also help you decrease your injury rate and increase your playing time.

Contact a physician who treats Joint Pain and Musculoskeletal conditions for an evaluation, treatment, and referral to a Physical Therapist so that you can get the most out of your golfing pleasure!
