Background "Open Data" is a movement in government where various types of information ("datasets") are openly shared with the public and between City departments electronically through a central website. These datasets are typically provided by individ al City departments or through data sharing with other local government a g e n ci e s. Th r o u g h stand a rdize d e l ectroni c f o r m a ts, t h e d a t a se t i s o p enly shar e d o n l in e w it h in d iv id u al s, co m p an ie s, an d n on-p r of it s. The City of Lo s Angeles po t ential l y has a larg e v o lu m e o fd a tase t s that would b e useful t o it s sta k eholder s ( e.g. recr e a tion f a cil i ties, traffic data, crime statist i c s, b u dget a ry information, C ity services, etc.) In addition, this data is often combined with GIS (Geographic Information S ystem) maps to graphically show C ity information by geog r aph y ( e.g. d a y car e cente r sb y zi p code , lib r aries b y n e i g h b or h ood, et c.)
