2. JUST LIKE THAT: The first-place Dodgers tonight continue a five-
game road trip (1-0) with the middle contest of a three-game set with
the San Diego Padres. After tomorrow’s series finale, the Dodgers
head to Arlington for a two-game Interleague series with the Texas
Rangers of the American League West.
The Dodgers are 7-3 against the Padres this season and have
won three of four at PETCO Park this year. Since Don
Mattingly took over as manager in 2011, Los Angeles is 26-
15 (.634) at PETCO Park. The rivalry has been pretty one-
sided since 2011:
Most Wins vs. Single Opponent, Since 2011
Nationals vs. Mets 55-26 .679
Braves vs. Marlins 55-28 .663
Dodgers vs. Padres 54-30 .643 SOURCE: STATS, LLC
Los Angeles has the Majors’ second-best winning percentage
at .590, behind only the Cardinals (.656, 40-21). The
Dodgers have won four consecutive games and are looking
for their first five-game winning streak since May 7-12.
Last night, the Dodgers improved to 13-7 in the first game of
a series, which is the best mark in the National League.
LUCKY NUMBER SEVEN?: Dodger starter Zack Greinke will
make his seventh attempt at a sixth victory tonight against San Diego.
In his previous six tries, Greinke has left the game with a lead or tied
on four occasions. The right-hander is 5-0 with a 1.53 ERA in 10-
career starts against the Padres, including 1-0 with a 0.87 ERA (2
ER/20.2 IP) in three starts this season. The Padres are one of only four
teams that have never beaten Greinke, with the others being the
Marlins (3-0), Giants (6-0) and Dodgers (2-0).
Greinke ranks among the NL’s best in ERA (1.92, 3rd
),
WHIP (0.95, T-1st), opponents’ batting average (.208, 3
rd)
and winning percentage (.833, 2nd
).
Since May 1, Dodger starters ranks second in the National
League with a 3.07 combined ERA (84 ER/246.0 IP) and,
overall, the rotation ranks fifth in the Majors with a 3.39
ERA (139 ER/369.1 IP).
(CAL) LEAGUE OF HIS OWN: Dodger right-hander Brandon
League made his second rehab appearance last night for Single-A
Rancho Cucamonga and tossed a scoreless eighth inning. League
allowed two singles and recorded one strikeout, making 22 pitches.
Fellow reliever Joel Peralta will pitch for Rancho tonight in
his second rehab outing. Scott Van Slyke will be the
designated hitter for Rancho Cucamonga tonight as he plays
in his first rehab game. Peralta has been out since late April
with right shoulder soreness and Van Slyke has missed the
last 13 games with mid-back inflammation.
STEADY AS HE GOES: Andre Ethier is not on this year’s All-Star
ballot, but is certainly worthy of write-in support, ranking among NL
outfielders in batting average (.298, 6th), home runs (8, T-10
th), RBI
(26, T-11th), on-base percentage (.377, 6
th) and slugging percentage
(.522, 4th). After his home run on Monday, Ethier (153) is just one
homer away from tying Willie Davis (154) for ninth place on the all-
time Los Angeles home run list. He also ranks among the Los Angeles
leaders in games (1,332, 8th), hits (1,287, 7
th), doubles (287, 5
th) and
RBI (644, 5th).
Ethier leads active players in hits (149), home runs (22) and
RBI (85) in 156 career games against the Padres.
REMEMBER DOWN UNDER?: At the global Stadium Business
Awards earlier this month in Barcelona, the historic 2014 opening
series between the Dodgers and Diamondbacks was named Sports
Event of the Year. The Dodgers’ visit beat out the Super Bowl, the
World Cup, the Abu Dhabi Formula 1 Grand Prix, the J.P Morgan
squash tournament held inside New York’s Grand Central Station and
Day of Handball at Commerzbank.
START VOTING DODGERS NOW!: Major League Baseball
announced the latest National League All-Star balloting results
Tuesday and several Dodgers remain in the hunt for a starting nod via
fan-balloting, including first baseman Adrian Gonzalez (2nd
, behind
Paul Goldschmidt), second baseman Howie Kendrick (4th), catcher
Yasmani Grandal (5th) and outfielder Joc Pederson (11
th). The 2015
Esurance MLB All-Star Ballot, which is available exclusively online
for the first time via MLB.com, Dodgers.com and mobile devices, has
surpassed the 200-million vote mark with more than three weeks to go
before the ballot closes on Thursday, July 2 at 8:59 p.m.
Gonzalez, who went 1-for-4 with an RBI last night, has six
home runs in 10 games against the Padres this year, two shy
of the single-season Dodger record vs. San Diego:
Most HR by Dodger in a Single Season vs. Padres
1t. Jimmy Wynn 8 (1974)
1t. Darryl Strawberry 8 (1991)
3t. Pedro Guerrero 7 (1983)
3t. Gary Sheffield 7 (2001)
3t. Matt Kemp 7 (2012)
Gonzalez is batting .432 (16-for-37) with three doubles, six
home runs and 11 RBI in 10 games against San Diego this
year and has hit safely in 14 of his last 16 games vs. the
Padres dating to Aug. 29, 2014 (.391, 25-for-64). His .332
career batting average (73-for-220) in 57 games against San
Diego ranks as the fourth-best mark among active players:
Active Batting Leaders vs. San Diego
1. Carl Crawford .342 (52-for-152)
2. Ichiro Suzuki .337
3. Buster Posey .335
4. Adrian Gonzalez .332 (73-for-220)
Overall, he continues to lead the Majors in doubles (21) and
ranks among the NL’s best in average (.317, T-10th), on-base
percentage (.398, T-5th) and slugging percentage (.564, 6
th).
Kendrick drove in the winning run Wednesday and his seven
game-winning RBI lead the Dodgers and are tied for fifth in
the National League. Kendrick’s .365 batting average (19-
for-52) with runners in scoring position also leads the club.
Grandal ranks among NL catchers (min. 125 AB) in home
runs (6, 4th), batting average (.277, 6
th), on-base percentage
(.387, 2nd
) and slugging percentage (.454, 3rd
).
Pederson’s 17 home runs are tied for fourth in the NL and he
also ranks among the league’s best in walks (41, 3rd
), on-base
percentage (.382, 12th) and slugging percentage (.552, 7
th).
Yasiel Puig, a 2014 fan-elected All-Star starter, has gone 10-
for-18 (.556) with a homer, three doubles, four RBI and five
runs scored in five games since being reinstated from the DL
(left hamstring strain). Puig has hit safely in 12 of his last 13
games since April 10, batting .429 (21-for-49) in that span.
ALEX THE GREAT: Alex Guerrero’s pinch-hit RBI single in the
eighth inning last night gives him a Major League best eight RBI off
the bench. Guerrero also leads the big leagues with three pinch-hit
homers and overall is hitting .353 (6-for-17) off the bench.
