"Starting Again"

What do you think is the nature of God? Does God know and

see everything we say and do?

In John 21:1-19 is the story about the disciples after Jesus'

resurrection. They were still hiding in a house for fear of being

arrested as one of Jesus' disciples — even after Mary told them

she had seen Christ alive. They were struggling with what to

believe. Was Jesus dead or was he alive? And then Jesus

suddenly appeared before them and they were shocked and filled

with joy. He also appeared before them eight days later when he

said to Thomas who doubted he was alive, "Put your finger here,

and see my hands, and put out your hand, and place it in my side;

do not be faithless, but believing."

It is interesting to me that after Jesus appeared to the disciples

a second time that they are still hiding in a house. What were they

waiting for? What were they expecting to happen? Apparently

bored with waiting Peter said to the other disciples, "I don't know

about you, but I'm going fishing!" Peter was thinking about

returning to his old job as though nothing has changed. It was like

he was saying, “There's nothing else to do, so I might as well go

back to fishing." But just before this 21st chapter in John, Jesus

gave the disciples clear instructions. He said, "As the Father has

sent me, even so I send you." (John 20: 21) Had Peter and the

other disciples forgotten that? Apparently that's what happened

because what did they do? They went fishing — and caught

nothing at all.

Then just as a new day was dawning one of the disciples saw

someone standing on the shore with a fire going. The stranger

asked the men, "Have you caught anything?" They answered

3

him, "No." The stranger replied, "Put your net down on the other

side of the boat, and you will find some." So they did as the

stranger told them to do and the quantity of fish they caught was

unbelievable. That's when John said to Peter, "It's the Lord!"

Realizing the stranger was Jesus, Peter jumped out of the boat

and swam to shore. Maybe as he swam to shore he feared Jesus

would be angry with him because none of them were doing what

Jesus told them to do. Expecting to be reprimanded by Jesus,

imagine the disciple's shock when he questioned Peter and asked

him, "Do you love me?" It was after Peter's response, "Yes Lord,

you know that I love you" that Jesus then gave the men food to eat

and said, "Tend my sheep. Feed my sheep."

Now here's the lesson for us. Jesus will always discover us

doing things we shouldn't be doing and doing exactly the opposite

of what he taught us. Holding grudges, discriminating against

people, judging people, ignoring the poor, fearing illness and death.

But with Jesus there is forgiveness. As he did to the disciples on

the shore, Jesus will feed us so that even in the mundane,

predictable routine of our lives we can start out again, resurrected

and thankful. Amen.
