“Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanks- giving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all under- standing, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” — Philippians 4:4-7 Dear brothers and sisters in Christ! What is the busiest time of the year? I suspect many of us might have the same answer: Christmas! It seems like there is always more to do in the weeks leading up to the holiday. There is always another gift to buy or another event to attend. The streets become crowded with cars flocking to the mall. We travel to visit family or prepare our homes to receive guests ourselves. All of these things are wonderful, but they can also bring stress along with them. Christmas is a busy time. The weeks before Christmas are the season of Advent for the church, and it brings us a different message. Advent is about slowing down and simply sitting in the presence of God. In church, we will be hearing readings like this passage from Philippi- ans. Paul, the author, suggests a different way of living and thinking. Paul calls us to live in a spirit of prayer and thanksgiving. God will guard our hearts and minds. We might even find God bringing peace in the face of our most stressful moments. And all of this is a cause for joy! “Rejoice in the Lord always,” Paul writes. The word for “rejoice” in the original Greek of the New Testament is chairo. It sug- gests a calm happiness or well-being. This is the joy of the Lord. Perhaps we should take the time to meditate on Paul’s words in the weeks leading up to Christmas. Take a mo- ment to rest, even if it is only for a few minutes, to lift up a word of rejoicing and thanks- giving to God. Who are the people in your life that you are thankful for during this season? Where have you seen God’s blessings? As we approach the celebration of our Savior’s birth, may we carve out places in all the busy-ness to hold gratitude in our hearts. Peace, Pastor Sonja I saw this Cinquain poem that was written by a group in a church last year and I wanted to share it with you. We Welcome Interim Pastor Paul Trenne! I am Pastor Paul Trenne and I am going to serve with you during the interim process. I have served with congregations in Wadena, Baudette, and Grand Forks. This past year I served in my first interim call at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Park River, ND.

I was born and raised in Alexandria, MN, was graduated from Concordia College, Moorhead, and went to seminary at Luther Northwestern, St. Paul. I am married to Pastor Karen Young Trenne who served with Our Savior’s as associate pastor with Pastor Bob Toso in 2001-2002. She is now pastor at Fisher and Bygland Lutheran churches. We have two children, Ben, a junior at Augustana University, Sioux Falls, SD; and Rachel, a freshman at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, Phil-adelphia, PA. We also have a spoiled dog, Taffy, and cat, Harry Potter.

When I am not busy with work, paying bills, mowing grass, moving snow, or walking the dog, you will find me devouring news, reading, hunting, and fishing. You should also know I love sports: Twins, Vikings, Wild, Timberwolves, and Lynx. Karen and I are enjoying UND football and women’s hockey this fall too.

It is my goal to help you prepare for your next Senior Pastor. I look forward to our time together. God Bless!

“As a community of women created in the im-age of God, called to discipleship in Jesus

Christ, and empowered by the Holy Spirit, we commit ourselves to grow in faith, affirm our gifts, support one another in our callings, en-

gage in ministry and action, and promote heal-ing and wholeness in the church, the

society, and the world.” (Mission and Purpose, WELCA)

Join us for these upcoming events: Thank Offering envelopes have been sent

out! All the money sent in for the Thank Of-fering will be given to the National office for support of Lutheran World Relief’s na-tional and international missions. Please consider giving in this way, and return your donations to the church office by Decem-ber 15.

The General Meeting for WELCA will be December 4 at 2pm. Please join us as we welcome speaker Timothy Denney! Enjoy music by the Grateful Hearts as well as an array of holiday treats. All women of Our Savior’s are welcome! We are in need of new members, so please join us for this fun event!

The ‘New’ Circle will begin meeting on the second Thursday of each month! Please join us on Thursday, December 8 @ 6:30pm at Stacy Schlieman’s house. We will share in caring conversation, Bible study and treats!

The WELCA Board is in need of several po-sitions: President, Vice President, Secre-tary, Mission Growth, Assistant Mission Growth, and Assistant Mission Community. We meet the 3rd Tuesday of each month, and we have a few other activities to do throughout the year. At this time, we only have three members going into the next year, and that is not enough people to run the program. LADIES, please prayerfully consider joining our group!

Circles—Please send an update of your groups to the church office. The WELCA Circle booklets will be ready at the end of December.

Youth News & Upcoming Events Ken Dessellier & Kaley Johnson, Youth Directors [email protected] or (218)773-8449 All are invited to participate in upcoming youth events. There’s something for every age group and all are welcome so bring your friends!

The Youth need your help! Have you ever looked into your closets to find a game for you and your friend, only to find it was missing pieces? Well, currently the youth can relate to this. Over the years, many board games have had pieces go missing, to never be seen again. As a result, a few of the games had to be tossed or be used to help make other games complete. If you would like to help us out, we are looking for any types of board games. They don’t have to be new. If you would like to donate a gently used game, we would greatly appreciate it! Thank you!

A Message of Gratitude & Appreciation from Kaley Over the past year and a half of being a youth director, I have been blessed with incredi-ble experiences and relationships. From all the events with the youth leadership team and youth groups ever week; to summer activities, an unforgettable hike on the camping trip, and coming together with all ages to play games and eat meals together—it has been an amazing journey. After weeks of prayer and conversation, I have decided to resign from this position at the end of this month. My last day will be December 22. This congregation has always been, and will continue to be, a wonderful community and home for me. Though I will be stepping down from this position, I will be sticking around and still active in our congregation. My prayers and support for Ken, the youth, the staff, and the entire con-gregation will continue as I move forward. I have especially been luck to lead alongside Ken and do this ministry together. I am beyond grateful for all of the support and encour-agement throughout this chapter. To everyone who has been a part of my journey, thank you from the depths of my heart! God’s love is shown through relationships and care for each other that we express each day in this space and throughout the community—let’s keep that going!

God’s peace and blessings, Kaley Johnson
