If we have three rods with the same stiffness value butwith three different action curves, the rod with a TC curvewill be perceived as faster than the other two. When weput together these two values (rod tempo and actioncurve) to describe a rod we also sometimes add either aminus- or a plus-sign. This is due to variations in stiffnessbetween rods within the same rod tempo interval.

Let’s say you are looking for a 5-weight 9 foot rod:

Yellow Line 590-3 /M/FCThe M means that the rod have a moderate or mediumtempo, nearly in the middle of the range. FC indicatesthat the rod have a long and deep action curve – FullAction Curve. A smooth and comfortable rod that loadseasily.

Multi 590-4 /M+/MCM+ inidcates that the rod have a moderate or mediumtempo that i closer to the next step in tempo, which isMF. The action curve is MC, meaning it has a MediumAction Curve. This rod will be perceived as fairly soft butsince the actioncurve is steeper than the previous YellowLine rod it sums up to be faster.

Evotec 590-3 /MF/MCMF means that the rod have a medium fast temporoughly in the middle of the range. The action curve isMC meaning it have a medium action curve. A rod thatmany will preceive as very moderate with medium valuesstraight through but in relation to the previous rod, Multi590-4, it is somewhat faster in tempo with nearly thesame curve.

Multi PWR 590-3 MF+/MCMF+ indicates a medium tempo just below the next stepin tempo, which is F. The action curve is MC i.e. a me-dium action curve. The rod will be perceived as relativelyfast, for some it can feel a bit stiff and in comparison withthe previous rod, Evotec 590-3, this is one notch fasterwhile bending roughly the same way. A rod with powerbut not as stiff as the stiffest ones.

Evotec 590-3 /F/TCF means that the rod have a fast tempo roughly in themiddle of the range. With a TC action curve it has a ”tip-pish” action curve – Tip Action Curve. This is a rod that,by many, feels relatively stiff and fast. If we compare it tothe other four it is the stiffest and fastest rod and if youuse the same line and casting tempo as when you castwith the Yellow Line not much will happen with a rod likethis. For this rod to bend you need speed when cast-ing. Rods with these values are not particularly suited for”gentle fishing”. This is a rod for those who can and liketo cast longer than their buddys.

To describe our rods we use two variables, rod tempoand action curve.

The rod tempo describes how fast and stiff a rod is:

• M=Medium. A rod with a medium tempo is per-ceived as softer and more relaxed in tempo whencompared to MF and F.

• MF=Medium Fast. A rod with a medium fast tem-po is a bit more moderate in stiffness and tempo.

• F=Fast. A rod with a fast tempo is perceived as fastand stiff in relation to M and MF

The action curve describes how the rod bends whenloaded:

• FC=Full Curve. Rods with this curve have a longand deep action curve. ”Full Action Curve”.

• MC=Mid Curve. Rods with a medium action curve.”Medium Action Curve”.TC=Tip Curve.• Rods with hthis curve have a highaction angle in the tip. ”Tip Action Curve”.
