ENTRE EL 16 I EL 25 DE MAIG DE 2013, TÉ LLOC L’ONZENA EDICIÓ DEL FESTIVAL, QUE S’HA CONSOLIDAT COM UNA DATA CLAU A NIVELL INTERNACIONAL PER ALS PROFESSIONALS I AMANTS DE LA VIDEOCREACIÓ CONTEMPORÀNIA, ELS FILMS D’ARTISTA I LA IMATGE EN MOVIMENT.

THE 11TH EDITION OF SCREEN FESTIVAL TAKES PLACE IN BARCELONA FROM 16TH TO 25TH MAY 2013. IT HAS CONSOLIDATED ITSELF AS THE ESSENTIAL INTERNATIONAL EVENT FOR PROFESSIONALS AND LOVERS OF ART PRACTICES RELATED TO VIDEO, FILM AND NEW MEDIA.


SCREENFESTIVAL

LA PROGRAMACIÓ DEL FESTIVAL, QUE INCLOU DIFERENTS COMISSARIS, ARTISTES I INSTITUCIONS, LOCALS I INTERNACIONALS, ES PRESENTA TANT EN ESPAIS INSTITUCIONALS COM EN GALERIES, CENTRES INDEPENDENTS, ASSOCIACIONS I BARS, ENTRE D’ALTRES. PROGRAMACIÓ L’SCREEN Festival 2013 s’estructura a partir de dos grans àmbits de treball. Sound & VisionAquest eix temàtic busca explorar els nombrosos creuaments de camins entre la videocreació i la música, emfatitzant les maneres en què es retroalimenten i el seu impacte en l’imaginari col·lectiu. Qüestiona també les relacions convencionals de subordinació del so respecte a allò visual. Des del punt de vista històric, han existit relacions fecundes entre les arts visuals i la música. Al llarg del segle XX, particularment des dels anys seixanta, les maneres, els comportaments i les iconografies de la música pop i els videoclips han estat presents en les pràctiques artístiques dels videocreadors contemporanis. Poetics & PoliticsL’aspecte polític forma part dels processos de videocreació

contemporanis, tant en relació amb elements de la dimensió sensible del subjecte com amb l’interès per inscriure i promoure noves subjectivitats. Moltes d’aquestes accions, intenten establir una veu de resistència davant les demandes funcionalistes del sistema econòmic i polític imperant; encarnen el desig de transformar les realitats contingents del present; exploren les diferents possibilitats del procés artístic; i utilitzen la video-creació com a eina per a l’emancipació dels subjectes. A més, com a novetat, incorpora tres rutes comissariades per agents convidats pel festival a pensar una programació especial: Equipo re, Estudio Nómada i Kika Nicolela.

THE FESTIVAL’S PROGRAMME, PRESENTED IN VARIOUS VENUES THROUGHOUT THE CITY, IS GENERATED BY INVITING INTERNATIONAL PLATFORMS, CURATORS AND INSTITUTIONS TO COLLABORATE WITH LOCAL ACTORS, EACH OF THEM INVOLVED AND PROACTIVE WITH REGARDS TO MOVING IMAGE. PROGRAMME SCREEN Festival 2013 is structured around two main themes. Sound & Vision This theme seeks to explore the numerous crossing lines between music and video, highlighting the mutual influences and the impact of these on the collective imagination. It also questions the conventional subordinate relationship of sound to image, which has

been enforced by hegemonic western culture. From the historical point of view, visual arts and music have maintained a fruitful relationship throughout the 20th century; since the 1960s in particular, the modes, attitudes, and iconography of pop music and music videos have been present in the artistic process of contemporary video creators. Poetics & Politics There is a strong political aspect in contemporary artistic practices which is linked both to the sensitive dimension of the subject and to the interest in registering and promoting new subjectivities. Many of these practices are trying to establish a voice of resistance to the functional demands of the dominant economic and political system. They embody the desire to transform our present realities while exploring new possibilities of art, and use video creation as a tool for the emancipation of the subject. Also, for the first time, the festival includes three curated routes by different curators: Equipo re, Estudio Nómada and Kika Nicolela, who have been invited to present a special programme.

This is Not a Love Song traça una genealogia de les relacions entre videocreació i música pop , des dels seixanta fins a l’actualitat, posant l’èmfasi en els moments en què es van retroalimentar i moure entre l’experimentació, la utopia o la incorrecció política. El projecte es divideix en dues seccions: Pop i videocreació, amb més de trenta peces destacades de la història del videoart i el

cinema experimental des dels seixanta fins al 2013; i Música per als teus ulls. Arts visuals i estètica del videoclip, un recorregut per la història del videoclip on es revisen les trajectòries dels realitzadors més significatius dels últims quaranta anys.

This is Not a Love Song sets out to trace the genealogy of the relations between pop music and video-creation from the 1960s to today, putting emphasis on those moments in which there was feedback between the two manifestations as they explored the field of experiment, utopia and political incorrectness. The project is divided into two sections: Pop and video-

creation, which includes more than 30 significant works in the history of video art and experimental film from the 60s to 2013; and Music for your eyes. Visual arts and the aesthetics of the videoclip, a journey through the history of the music video of the last 40 years.

TWIN relata el procés del projecte Twin Tastes & Tongues que Screen Projects va comissionar a Miralda per al Pavelló de Barcelona de la 9ª Biennal de Shanghai, inaugurada l’octubre de 2012. Partint del fet que Barcelona i Shanghai són ciutats agermanades, TWIN explora els imaginaris,els rituals, les polítiques i les tradicions de cada lloc a través del menjar. El resultat és una cartografia visual des d’on sorgeixen similituds, diferències i processos agermanats i globals.

TWIN is an exhibition portraying the work process of Miralda’s Twin Taste & Tongues project for the Barcelona Pavilion for the 9th Shanghai Biennale which opened in October 2012. Taking the fact that Barcelona and Shanghai are twin cities as a departing point, TWIN is an exploration of both cities’ imaginaries, traditions, rituals and politics through its food culture and eating habits, resulting in a visual cartography through which similarities, differences and globalization twinning processes are further explored.

L’objectiu d’aquest projecte és crear un diàleg entre els vídeos d’art contemporani i la

iconografia romànica. La videoprojecció de Bertrand Gadenne anomenada La bulle (La bombolla) funciona com un símbol filosòfic de l’individu i del món actual. Matthew Day-Jackson retrata, en forma de loop, l’explosió de les dues primeres bombes nuclears. Sven Johne captura una coral d’homes cantant un rèquiem per una visita guiada turística. Després de la seva mort, els seus amics es pregunten per aquesta pèrdua: és justícia celestial o un càstig?

The aim of this project is to create a dialogue between contemporary art videos and

the romanesque iconography. Bertrand Gadenne’s video-projection titled La bulle works as a philosophical symbol of the Self and the World today. Matthew Day-Jackson depicts the first two nuclear bombs never endlessly falling. Sven Jöhne’s video depicts a choir of men singing a Requiem for a touristic guide tour. After his death, his twelve colleagues questioned themselves about the reasons of this loss: was it celestial justice or a punishment?

L’exposició és un homenatge a un dels autors més importants de la història del cinema i explica, per primera vegada, les arrels culturals, estètiques i tècniques de Méliès, demostrant que els inicis del seu món es troben als orígens del cinema: ombres animades, llanterna màgica, fantasmagòria, crono-fotografia, il·lusionisme, màgia i fantasia. El ritme de la mostra està marcat per projeccions, aparells cinematogràfics en

funcionament i objectes únics -de la Cinémathèque Française-, com la primera càmera de Méliès o el vestuari original de Viatge a la lluna.

The exhibition, based on one of the most important artists in the history of cinema, explains Méliès’ cultural, aesthetic and technical roots, and shows how the origins of his world are found in the origins of cinema: animated shadows, magic lantern, phantasmagoria, chronophotography, illusion, magic and fantasy. The rhythm of the exhibition is set by projections, operating cinematographic apparatus and unique items such as Méliès’ first camera and original costumes from Trip to the Moon. The objects belong to the Cinémathèque Française.

Què fer, mostra una selecció en tres episodis de la Col·lecció d’Art Contemporani de la Fundació “la Caixa” i té com objectiu qüestionar com l’art pot orientar-nos al món contemporani. Què fer, tercera part d’aquesta exhibició, mostra peces de vídeo i videoinstal·lacions de tres artistes rellevants en la producció artística contemporània. El recorregut de l’exposició està marcat per una videoinstal·lació en dos canals de Javier Téllez, una gravació de Bruce Nauman fent exercicis i balls al seu estudi i una videoinstal·lació de Janine Antoni.

Què fer, the third and last show of the cycle, presents a selection of video and video installation pieces by outstanding contemporary

The exhibition deals with the relationship of what we see, what we know and what becomes an image within the framework of the Egyptian Revolution. The video Cairo Times is a personal analysis of the use of images during the revolution. CROP is an experimental documentary that reveals the inside of the Al Ahram’s building - Egypt’s most influential state newspaper. We witness the proceedings inside the institution while we follow the story of a photo-journalist who gives a personal opinion on the use of the media by the old regime.

We recommend the exhibition Insomnia that brings together international artists who have explored film from the sixties to the present. The selected artists take an experimental approach to working with the properties of film, unfettered by the demands of the film industry. The works in the exhibition modify the conventions of cinema from three different perspectives: by analysing the convergence of photography and cinema, by modifying traditional forms of projection and creating new kinds of viewing spaces, and by renewing the models of film narrative.

The video Doomed by the artist Tracey Moffat is presented for the first time in Catalonia, as part of the Festival. The exhibition is a selection of videoart work by first class international artists, and shows aswell two pieces of contemporary sculpture. All works are part of the collection of the Foundation Sorigué showing for the first time a selection of his works in Barcelona. One of the artists is Bill Viola, considered one of the fathers of videoart.

Fiorenza Menini era per casualitat a Nova York l’11 de setembre de 2001 i va gravar imatges de l’atemptat en temps real. A diferència dels clixés realistes de la premsa, aquest document fílmic es distancia de la representació de la catàstrofe que tenim en

En canvi, a la peça Anti-terrorist Variety, de Chen Shaoxiong, un taulell d’escacs i dos vídeos evoquen un hipotètic atac sobre les dues torres més altes de Pequín i Shangai.

By chance, Fiorenza Menini was in New York on September 11,

2001, and was able to film the attacks in real time. This video document is very different to the broadcasted realistic videos of the catastrophe that we have in mind. A fixed shot is rogressively pervaded by a smoke cloud that slowly dissipates. Hence, contemplation replaces violence. Anti-terrorist Variety, by Chen Shaoxiong, shows a chess table together with two videos that allude to a hypothetical attack on the two highest towers in Beijing and Shanghai.

All of Us presents a diversity of personal approaches to various political themes. Some artists use visual metaphors to raise awareness; some, stress the

need to remember crucial events; others, directly provoke events with the aim to promote change. They deal with more than specific political issues. They raise another tricky question: which is the role of the artist in contemporary society? Is it a utopian (or pretentious) project to see art as an engine to change the fabric of our world? Or is it a necessity?

delle Esposizioni in Rome and the Martin Gropius Bau in Berlin, funded with support from the European Commission’s Culture Programme.To take an approach to Pasolini’s relationship with the city of Rome means simultaneously entering into all the aspects that composed it and defined it: friendship, literature, politics, love, sex and film.There is a Rome before and a Rome after Pasolini. His texts and his films created a new imaginary of the city of Rome. Pasolini was not happy with integrating the city as a backdrop to his novels and his films, but rather he “re-founded” Rome through literature and film.

Henry Hudson and His Son és un striptease sobre l’herència pare-fill. Federico alterna l’espai clínic, el dipòsit d’un museu, l’arxiu amateur i el paisatge romàntic; llocs de violència asèptica on situa la relació basada en el pupil·latge versus la supervivència. Vladimir x3 (El Grande) és una epopeia multiforme en la qual el narrador es multiplica, torçant els objectius heroics de la seva exploració. A Gallon of Monster Foam és,

segons l’artista, una peça de no-ficció on es dissecciona el caràcter antropòfag de l’ésser humà.

Tierra Sin Males és un vídeo giratori, en espiral. Una gran esfera de vidre rodola amunt i avall sobre una llosa de fusta balancejada sobre un suport triangular. Clavada dins l’esfera hi ha una imatge d’un senyal de trànsit de l’autopista prop de la frontera entre Mèxic i els Estats Units, que alerta els conductors per evitar xocar amb els immigrants que creuen corrent en la seva fugida. La imatge es distorsiona amb el moviment pendular de l’esfera.

Tierra Sin Males is a spinning, spiraling and fracturing video piece. A large glass globe rolls tensely back and forth on a track over a central fulcrum. Embedded in the sphere is an image which is the reflection of a highway sign near the Mexico/US border warning drivers not to hit immigrants as they flee along the road. As the globe rolls up the track, tilting almost over the edge, it contorts and distorts the image inside.

L’èpica política i personal del Japanese Red Army s’explica en aquesta pel·lícula experimental a través de dos testimonis orals, May Shigenobu i Masao Adachi, que comparteixen una experiència revolucionària de 27 anys. El film explora trenta anys d’autoinvenció on el tema

recurrent és la qüestió de la imatge. En un format experimental, els relats dels dos testimonis es superposen a imatges fûkericon, filmades en Super 8 al paisatge contemporani de Tòquio i Beirut.

The political and personal epic of the Japanese Red Army is recounted in this experimental film through two oral testimonies, May Shigenobu and Masao Adachi who share a revolutionary experience of 27 years. The film explores thirty years of self-invention in which the recurring theme is the

question of image. Adopting an experimental documentary format, the accounts of the two testimonies overlay new fûkeiron images, filmed in Super 8 in the contemporary landscapes of Tokyo and Beirut.

The Radiant és una peça cinemàtica, comissionada al 2012 per dOCUMENTA (13), que explora les seqüeles del terratrèmol que va desencadenar el tsunami i va causar milers de morts i la fusió a la planta nuclear de Fukushima Daiichi, l’11 de Març del 2011. La peça, que compta amb la dificultat de representar les conseqüències d’una pluja radioactiva, ofereix una ullada a la forma i la presència d’una entitat oculta i a les seves manifestacions abstractes a través d’allò visual.

Commissioned as part of dOCUMENTA (13) in 2012, The Radiant explores the aftermath of March 11, 2011, when the Tohoku earthquake triggered a tsunami that killed many thousands and caused the partial meltdown of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. Burdened by the difficult task of representing the invisible aftermath of nuclear fallout, this cinematic document offers glimpses into the shape and presence of an unseen entity and its abstract manifestation through visual phenomena.

Mantis Religiosa és un vídeo que transcendeix a altres mons portant l’espectador vers un llenguatge visual pictòric,

cinematogràfic, i teatral mitjançant la dansa, la música i la recreació fictícia de l’univers de les mantis religioses. El fil conductor del vídeo és una nena perduda al desert, enmig de la nit que, després d’una trobada màgica amb una mantis religiosa, finalment es salva amb les danses i la música d’aquest elegant insecte. Praying Mantis is a video art that transcends to other worlds bringing the audience into a visual language of painting, video and theatrical art through the dance, music and the fictional recreation of the world of the praying mantis. The video art tells the story of a lost kid in the middle of the salt desert at night that after a magical encounter with a praying mantis will be saved with the dances and music of this elegant insect. Praying Mantis is the first work by Vision of the Dance.

L’exposició acull dues peces: Piece of Paper, de Daniel Schwarz, i Vanish, de Davide Cairo. La primera és un viatge a través d’escultures fetes de retalls de paper triangulars i de 40 kg de terra dins l’estudi de Fàbrica Benetton. Sobre les escultures s’hi projecten llums i visuals a ritme de Piece of Paper, d’Amon Tobin.

Vanish és un film experimental que recorre un trajecte, a través de la música i el vídeo, definit per una selecció d’objectes de l’entorn quotidià de l’artista.

The exhibition presents two video pieces: Piece of Paper by Daniel Schwarz and Vanish by Davide Cairo. Piece of Paper is a journey traced by a setup of triangle-cut paper

sculptures, various pop-up sculptures and 40 kg of soil. Visuals and lights are projected on the sculptures reacting to Amon Tobin‘s track Piece of Paper. Vanish is an experimental journey through music and video that was defined by choosing mundane objects around the artists’ environment in order to build models and record visuals as well as sounds from them.

Nyamnyam is dedicated to explore and promote the relationship between different art forms and gastronomy,

and articulate new relationships and push forward new situations relating food to the social network. The work is presented as an investigation about the new discoveries on the fermentation food process by Louis Pasteur. Notes, images, quotes and videos are compared and contrasted in a way that its visuality is put to experiment.

terme una acció a partir de les filmacions realitzades a Shanghai, al voltant dels guetos de refugiats jueus en aquesta ciutat durant la Segona Guerra Mundial, i la cançó Nights of Shanghai, de 1940, fent una relectura in situ d’aquests materials històrics i permetent que esdevinguin contemporanis.

Ye Shanghai is a music-visual performance, a work of live cinema. The artist’s performance will be based on footage of Shanghai’s refugee ghettos during the Second World War, and the song Nights of Shanghai, from 1940. The artist will use this material to propose a reading in situ of these historical accounts in a contemporary setting.

La ruta proposa un recorregut per quatre formes actuals de “polítiques del cos”: la regulació de la immigració (Daniela Ortiz & Xose Quiroga); la visibilitat del cos seropositiu (Guillermo Moscoso); la presència del cos precari que evidencia un conflicte social (Pilar Quinteros); i els processos de gentrificació urbana (Virginie Manuel / PEI). Alguns dels

treballs incideixen de manera crítica en la configuració de la “ciutat” actual, entesa com un entramat de control biopolític. Hi participaran artistes i altres agents amb els quals entaular un diàleg.

This route proposes a journey through for contemporary forms of “body politics”: immigration regulation (Daniela Ortiz & Xose Quiroga); visibility of seropositive bodies (Guillermo Moscoso); the presence of the precarious body which states the social conflict (Pilar Quinteros); and the urban gentrification process (Virginie Manuel / PEI). Some of these works have a critical impact in the configuration of the current city, understood as a network of biopolitical control. The route will be followed by some artists and other agents that will hold a debate on these topics.

aquestes sessions, es presenten un conjunt de consignes visuals que expandeixen el camp d’allò polític fins a les entranyes.

War on the bodily territory, overpass its boarders, disrupt imposed orders, expurgate and vomit the corrupt education received as an obligation, read where we are and what we want, empower the body and carefully destroy the sexo-political normative regime. Amb l’objectiu d’oferir un recorregut pel Gòtic, un conjunt d’espais obren les portes per ensenyar videoart i videoinstal·lacions al voltant del tema Construïm la ciutat. Les obres giren entorn de la interacció entre la ciutat i els seus habitants -la migració, la urbanització, la construcció i la destrucció- que il·luminaran i transformaran el teixit històric de Barcelona. La ruta tindrà lloc dues vegades i començant a Estudio Nómada.

In a specific part of the historical Gòtic quarter, a group of neighboring spaces open their doors to show video art and video installations around the theme We Built this City. Works reflecting human-city interaction, migration, urbanization and construction/destruction will illuminate and transform the historic surface of the city. The route will take place twice and will depart from Estudio Nómada.

És una crítica lúdica, contundent i burlesca; un atac ferotge contra la

incongruència de la guerra. La música adquireix aquí un paper predominant amb un ampli repertori de cançons de la soldadesca i s’inclouen discursos i documents fotogràfics originals de la Primera Guerra Mundial. A més, si repassem el ventall d’actors, descobrirem noms que evoquen els ambients artístics que Antoni Miralda i Benet Rossell van freqüentar a París a principis dels anys setanta. This feature film was shot in Paris in 1974 and interpreted by Jaume Xifra and Pierre Restany. It is a fun, forceful and burlesque criticism, a fierce attack against the incongruity of war, in which the music takes on a prominent role with a wide repertoire of songs from the soldiery. It also includes speeches, original photos and documents from World War I.In the cast list, we find names of artists from the Parisian scene that Rossell and Miralda frequented in the early 70s.

Equipo re és una plataforma per a l’articulació de l’espai de l’art amb l’acció crítica; un dels seus àmbits d’intervenció són les “polítiques del cos”, enteses com la configuració de les formes de gestió biopolítica i les estratègies de resistència davant d’aquestes. El projecte es presenta a travers d’espais autogestionats del Poble Sec i del Raval Equipo re is a platform for the articulation of the art space and the critical action; one of their fields of intervention is “body politics”, understood as the configuration of the borders for bio political management and the resistant strategies that confront them. The project is presented through self-managed platforms in Raval and in Poble Sec.

LOOP STUDIES: ON COLLABORATION.UNIVERSITAT DE BARCELONA + LOOP EDUCATIONDavant el desmantellament sistemàtic i la redefinició de les polítiques públiques i davant dels canvis de paradigma al camp de la cultura, el context actual exigeix noves actituds en relació a la producció cultural.LOOP STUDIES presenta 3 dies de taules rodones i casos d’estudi al voltant de la pregunta What about collaboration? amb l’objectiu de treure a la llum nous horitzons de creació, producció i administració relacionats amb el concepte de col·laboració. LOOP STUDIES busca explorar, discutir, imaginar i conceptualitzar estratègies comunes (des de les pràctiques autogestionades fins a les institucions) i construir un espai de reflexió sobre metodologies ètiques en l’art, socialment sostenibles i políticament apropiades al context actual.

work paradigm in the field of culture; the current context requires new attitudes towards the cultural production.Firmly rooted in the question What about collaboration?, LOOP STUDIES presents 3 days of round tables and professional case studies, aiming to shine a light on new horizons of creation, production and administration built around the concept of collaboration. SDR SISTEMES DE REPRESENTACIÓSDR s’imparteix a l’Escola d’Arquitectura La Salle des del curs 1999-2000. SDR és un espai per construir coneixement a partir de la interrelació entre diverses matèries i disciplines: art i arquitectura, estètica i composició, disseny gràfic i comunicació visual, estudis visuals i representació, vídeo i espai.El coneixement es genera a partir de les activitats d’aprenentatge: representar i analitzar fotogràficament la ciutat, captar i representar l’espai urbà amb el vídeo. Artist Isabel María’s project The camera as writing in the audiovisual creation of Bill Viola (The Passing), Alan Berliner

(Nobody’s Business) and Agnès Varda (Les glaneurs et the glaneuse) investigates and analyzes the creative processes of each of these artists and their audiovisual languages from their own language. The result are three documentaries: Transit Times with Bill Viola, Some of everyone with Alan Berliner, and Gleaning a gleaner with Agnès Varda. The documentaries depict an approximation to the artists and their works, while portraying at the same time the human being through gestures and improvisation.

THE WORKSHOPS AT MINISCREEN ARE ALL ESPECIALLY DESIGNED FOR CHILDREN AND AIM TO ENHANCE THEIR CREATIVITY AND HELP THEM THINK IN NEW WAYS ABOUT WHAT ART IS AND HOW IT IS MADE.MINISCREEN 2013 WILL FOCUS ON SENSORIAL EXPERIENCES AND HOW WE CAN USE ALL OUR SENSES TO EXPERIENCE ART. que tenim nas. Les olors també viatgen per l’espai com la llum i el so. Fins i tot ens poden explicar històries. Una mà de contes et convida a pintar la teva olor preferida amb el taller de dibuix del seu web: una fruita, la teva habitació, la mare... De quin color és la seva olor?DO COLOURS HAVE SMELLS?(in collaboration with Una mà de contes)Cinema, television, computers… caught in technology; sometimes we forget we have a nose. Smells also travel through space, just like light and the sun, and they can also tell stories. Una mà de contes invites you to paint your favourite scent during their workshop: a piece of fruit, your room, your mother… what colour is their scent?

Es projectaran fotos de paisatges, objectes o espais sobre una tela que després es pintarà. Serà un exercici creatiu i educatiu. Els nens i nenes es podran endur les obres a casa!
