SLETTER SCHOOL REVIEW—Feedback
Nilma Primary school will be conducting the School Review this term. The school review is a process that all schools complete every four years. We will conduct a pre-review self evaluation of the previous four years work—School Strategic plan, Annual Implementation plan, School performance reports and any other relevant data/information. We are conducting surveys and interviews to gain feedback from students, parents and staff as well. We assess whether we have achieved our goals as well as build some new goals towards a new four year—School Strategic Plan (SSP). The plan will outline our new goals and key strategies to implement to work towards achieving the goals, with the focus is on improving student outcomes. The company we will be using to support us through the process will be RADii. Our school reviewer is Sharon Adams, and we have two peer principals of other primary schools, namely Julie Kennedy and Melissa Rock. Julie and Melissa will be challenge partners to support our Peer Review, by providing us with a different view of our school data and challenge our thinking so we can gain the best outcomes for students at Nilma.
During the next 2 weeks we will be asking all parents, teachers and students to:
1. Complete the RADII online survey and answer some questions. The information below is to allow the various respondents to access their surveys anonymously. Respondents should follow this procedure; (a) Go to http://surveys.school/surveys/schoolsurveys.aspx (b) Enter the relevant Survey ID as listed below. (c) Click SUBMIT. (d) Logoff to save and record the responses. Parent Survey ID: mut347
2. Complete the school based survey. - Parent Opinion Survey - Student Attitude to school survey
KidsMatter Interview Survey Thank you to our Chaplain, Anne Prime, who has been conducting these surveys with families. We have received 17 responses back so far, this is a positive response to the surveys and we thank you for your support and feedback. Anne will continue to work with families to complete the process for our review.
4. Student Family Interview Students will also bring home some questions to interview parents about Nilma today attached to the newsletter. What does our school do well? What could our school do better? What suggestions do you have for future improvements and/or considerations? What kind of school do we hope to be in five years, further on…?
WHOLE SCHOOL EXCURSION On Friday 28th July the whole school will participate in an excursion to Melbourne. Years F-2 will be visiting the Zoo and Years 3-6 will visit the Botanical Gardens. HOMEGROUP HAPPENINGS!
Following our Water topic Big Write, we spent some sessions analyzing our work, including highlighting all four areas of VCOP, deciding what level we are on, celebrating what we did well (2 stars) and setting goals (a wish). Here are some examples of students' two stars and a wish:
Zavier (2 Stars) I used a lot of punctuation, like capital letters and full stops; its a readable story. (Wish) To add more WOW words and openers.
Sheree
(2 Stars) I used a lot of WOW words for said and yelled; I did it a little different than the movie and I added a lot of expression.
(Wish) To put some more Sheree (me) in it, rather than
copying a movie & to put more detail than I have.
Ashton (2 Stars) I think I did well at not putting capital letters in the wrong spot; I did well at spelling. (Wish) To use more punctuation.
Mikayla (2 Stars) I edited my punctuation; I've put my b and d around
the right way.
(Wish) More WOW words, but correct use.
Savannah (2 Stars) I used lots of WOW words; I wrote a lot more than normal. (Wish) It needs to make more sense.
This term our whole numeracy focus is ‘measurement’. This week the students in Mrs Evans measurement group were working on ‘length’. Students were measuring objects in the classroom using informal units such as hand spans, cubes and popsicle sticks. Students learnt about ‘estimation’ by making a measured guess about the length of an object before they measured it. Students then measured objects and recorded their correct length. Everyone had lots of fun and were engaged in our learning activities.

KITCHEN GARDEN COOKING!
Wow! Kitchen Garden! We
made butter and lemonade
scones, they were so
good…because I made
them! I only had one
because they were so big
but my levels went high
big time! They were so
bad for me… but yummy! Deklan
Ring…
Ring….Ring!
That’s the bell,
and that means
we are having
Kitchen Garden.
So I line up for
cooking and Mrs
Hodge is at the door with a tub of hot soapy water for us to
wash our hands. There I was in the line waiting for my
turn to wash. Mrs Hodge told us the menu. “Today we are
going to be cooking pancakes. The
pancakes we are making are vegetable,
strawberry and plain pancakes. Also for
extra food we are making lemonade
scones and for on top we are making
our own butter with parsley and also
just some normal jam.”
Guess what? I got to cook the
vegetable pancakes! By Alice-Ann

This week we’ll spend more time looking at the third love language which is “quality time”. Last week I mentioned that the most important thing about quality time is simply the fact of our including our children. Learning to focus on them for half an hour or so each day (apart from meal time and chores). It’s a great time for doing active things together, but also gives us an opportunity to know our child/children better. As we spend time with our kids, a natural result is often good conversations about all sorts of things related to our lives. If you can do this from early stages in their lives you will be helping them in the long term (teenage years and early adult hood). Sharing of thoughts and feelings is the fabric of which life is made. You might say as a Dad “Yeh, but that’s not me – I just can’t chat”. Or, “It’s easier to do that with the girls but not so easy for the boys.” So here are some ideas if you’re stuck. If you’re looking for a particular spanner, ask your boy (or girl) to help you look. Pick up one or two other sorts and explain the differences. [You may have one of Grandpa’s ancient tools on the bench - this is an opportunity to share his story] Keep looking together. -look at your child’s face as s/he talks with you -make an outdoor Christmas decoration from an old pallet left out in the industrial area – a free standing pine tree shape is fun and can be changed with a coat of paint and a bauble each season. Ever been to Bunnings and experienced that special sense of ‘now where to next’ as an adult? Share it with your kids. If you’re not too broke you could get a BBQ sausage on bread. It’s even fun to share one between you both. (Your teaching them how to make do, share and problem solve.) He’ll probably do the same thing when he’s a dad. Take it in turns to put your child to bed. Set up a little ritual - find something to be thankful for ( this ends the day on a good note), -ruffle a head, -do an exaggerated ‘tuck in’ and lift the edge of the mattress a few times as you tuck, -end with a ditty “Nite, nite, don’t let the bed bugs bite’ or “Do you reckon you’ll be more handsome in the morning after a good sleep?” and see what the response is. (as they get older it’ll be cheekier and then when they’re in their teens catch them by surprise by doing it again when they least expect it – they’ll pretend that its’ ‘boring’ but underneath they’ll smile). These times are the stuff of life that affirms and values your relationship so make the most of them and have a great weekend.. Anne Prime (Chaplain)

THURSDAY 7th SEPTEMBER!
COMMUNITY NOTICES Mrs Evans is looking for a family to adopt and care for her two rabbits, Felix and Tulip. Felix is a 4 year old Netherland Dwarf and Tulip is a 1 year old Mini Lop. Felix and Tulip need a new home/s due to Mrs Evans moving to a large property with other animals that unfortunately are scaring the rabbits too much. Pet rabbits need a safe and caring environment where they are lovingly cared for. Mrs Evans is very sad to part with her rabbits, but would rather they live their lives in a safe and happy home where they are not scared. Felix and Tulip will come with a little portable cage, but the new carers will need to have a secure rabbit pen/cage where the rabbits can move around, stretch and graze. The rabbits eat rabbit seed, carrots, leafy greens and rabbit treats. Small pets will interact well with the rabbits, however large dogs will not. If you are a family who would love two little rabbits (both de-sexed, vaccinated and healthy) please come and see Mrs Evans.
