NEW
SLETTER WELCOME BACK
Welcome back to the new term everyone! We hope you all had a well-earned break and students are back refreshed for another term of learning. This will be another busy term with students rehearsing and preparing for our 2015 production of “Kids in Camelot” to be held on Thursday 10th September.
MS SUTHERLAND’S ADVENTURES Ms Sutherland and Paul are currently travelling in Turkey experiencing the history, culture and food of the country. They have made a visit to Gallipoli to explore the peninsula and reflect on events there 100 years ago. Some photos forwarded back to school show they are managing to have a good time. REPORTING TO PARENTS ON STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT—PARENT TEACHER DISCUSSIONS, STUDENT REPORTS AND LEARNING PORTFOLIOS Thank you to all the families who came to have discussions with staff about your child’s learning achievements and areas for focus for this term. These discussions were well attended and reinforce the shared partnership between school and home. Could parents please return the student portfolios this week. These portfolios will be used for the second semester. Please don’t forget to write some comments about your child’s learning on the comments page! CAR PARK Just a reminder for parents and students to take care and drive slowly at drop of and pick up times please. Parents and students to only cross the car park at the crossing, using the new steps, otherwise walk on the pathways around the outside of car park. Thank you. SCHOOL GROUNDS WORKS
During the first week of the school holidays, Trevor & David from Mad Cat Constructions rebuilt the retaining
wall in the car park and also installed steps at the crossing and made an area for the waste bin. A great improvement!
Premier’s Reading Challenge Our Premier’s Reading Challenge is now well underway. Students in grade F-2 will be reading and sharing the books in class. For year 3-6 students the challenge is to read 15 books independently. Our expectation is that all students will be prepared to participate and accept the challenge. This requires from the older students self-discipline, a willingness to accept responsibility and a preparedness to take on and manage the challenge by themselves . Those who complete it will have demonstrated the REAL@Nilma values and shown a very responsible attitude to their learning! Year 3-6 students can use this reading as part of their LAUGH home reading. Congratulations to Daniel Axford (yr4 Blue) who has joined Kiara and Ella Perry in completing the Challenge independently. Well done!
STAFFING TERM 3 Annette Sutherland is on Long Service Leave for the first 4 weeks of term 3. During Annette’s absence Kerry Williams will be Acting Principal. Claire O’Brien will teach in the Blue Homegroup during this time. Leanne Hodge will be on leave for the first 4 weeks of term 3, Sharon Faulds will replace Leanne during this time.
WARRAGUL SWAP MEET—FUNDRAISER A huge THANK YOU to Nicki Kimm for her organisation and coordination of the Warragul Swap Meet fundraiser for NPS. The team raised an impressive $750 for the school! Thank you to Phil, Danielle & Jade Mammolito, Amanda Buckler, Jason, Ashton & Shakira Kimm; Alex & Piper Bundle, Michael Kindermann, Rodney Cogo, and Belinda & Cameron Smythe for their help with the catering during the morning and assisting with setting and packing up. Money raised will go towards school programs. This was a fantastic effort from the Parents & Families of Nilma who provide valuable support to the school with fundraising. We encourage all parents ( and friends) to become involved and support them in their fundraising efforts.

HOMEGROUP HAPPENINGS!
Holidays
On the holidays Anthony, Dad and I
went to Pakenham to see our Aunty and
Uncle. It wasn’t much of a day but
Anthony had a glove and kept throwing
it at me. It was so annoying! Other than
that we watched TV. While I was
watching TV I had a delicious hot
chocolate. After that it was time to go
home in the rainy cold weather. By the time we had
left it was around dinner time so we decided to go to
a restaurant. It was called La Porchetta. We had a
small garlic pizza for the entrée, it was nice and hot.
For the main course we had a yummy large half
Hawaiian and half the lot pizza. For dessert Anthony
and I shared a chocolate mousse. My dad had a
sticky date pudding. It looked so much better than
ours I just wanted to grab the plate and scoff it
down. I got some anyway. Then it was time to go.

Exciting Times!
On the holidays I stayed with my
brother in Melbourne and his wife
and two kids. They’re 2 and 3 years
old.
When we went into their back yard
the 3 years old turned on the hose
and wet me, so I had to change
clothes.
At night when the kids went to bed, their mum
and I watched ‘Mall Cop 1’ and ‘Mall Cop 2’.
On the second week my friend came over and we
had a sleepover and ate KFC for dinner.

The Holidays
One morning my brother and I played the X-box.
We sat in the lounge. We had a good time.
One day I had pizza, I took a piece of bacon off
and I saw cheese so I touched it and I hurt
myself.

KIDS IN CAMELOT
SYNOPSIS
Tristan, a confident, resourceful ( but slightly impatient) boy from our time, wakes up in the year 528 AD, in
Camelot. He is viewed with suspicion by Merlin, who fears competition from a foreign wizard, but, through his
resourcefulness (pretending to take away the sun during an eclipse) Tristan becomes ‘Boss’ of Camelot and sets
about modernising the country and bringing a ‘new order’ to medieval England. But he does not listen to the
locals and not all his decisions are appropriate. Accidentally insulting Sir Sagramore, he is commanded to
undertake a quest to become a Knight and then face a joust with the champion Sagramore. Again, through
ingenuity, he wins. But the peasants do not approve of his unusual methods…and his new empire is beginning to
crumble. He must leave Camelot and allow history to take its course.

CHAPLAINS’ CHAT Welcome back! I don’t know about you, but this break for me has been delightful; meeting up with family and cousins, even a 99th birthday party (no not mine). Our topic today ‘Clear communication’ is a goal to strive for in every area of life. Work becomes improved if we know exactly what is expected of us. Our relationships are enhanced if we can be open and honest with each other. Our children will become more motivated if we are able to fully communicate with them in a language they understand. The following strategies will help:
When you have made a decision ensure that the standards are clear and the limits and boundaries are fully understood.
Provide your rationale for the decision and allow your children to understand the reasons for your decision. If appropriate allow your son/daughter to have input into the decision and for them to feel heard and valued. This level of open communication encourages them to take a high level of responsibility for their actions to the point where they are able to regulate themselves.
Ensure that both parents agree to the decision and don’t fall into the trap of being played against each other …’but Mom said ...’ Be consistent. Your word should be your bond. It is also wise to be consistent over time too – not swaying from week to week. In all your decisions it is good to acknowledge your child’s feelings and needs and, whenever practical, to offer them alternatives and choices, without becoming too permissive. Helping your child with their homework requires a slightly different approach to communication. By that I mean don’t give them the answers! In this case it is best to give hints or prompts and encourage them to think it through for themselves. When they succeed then clearly communicate your joy at their abilities. Solid verbal encouragement will always produce a good feeling inside your child and that will reap benefits for them both individually and well into their future. Enjoy your weekend and miss everything but the scenery as you travel. Anne
