We are significantly expanding our Conservation and Easements Program, with ongoing support from program partner Friends of the Wissahickon. FISCAL YEAR 2016based on audited statements

In spring 2016, we announced the launch of a major planning project for Chestnut Hill, in partnership with the Chestnut Hill Community Association. This Study will help manage residential conservation, preservation, and new development in the face of increasing development pressure, effectively protecting the distinctive character of Chestnut Hill into the future. Moving into summer 2016, we raised substantial project funding, identified a professional planning consultant, and began assembling a steering committee of local experts in areas ranging from economics to architecture to law.

We are significantly expanding our Conservation and Easements Program, with ongoing support from program partner Friends of the Wissahickon. We have been meeting with an ever-growing number of community members interested in making an easement donation to ensure the protection of their property's historical and/or environmental assets in perpetuity.

Sensitive restoration projects and innovative new construction bring Chestnut Hill into the future. Our first annual Great Houses Tour in May 2016 inspired hundreds of participants with how older homes and modern living can coexist beautifully.

We also helped homeowners empower themselves to treat their own property well with our new Ask the Experts Home & Garden Series, which we introduced in February 2016 and offer monthly with support from the Chestnut Hill Community Fund and businesses.

The Archives added 80 new items to the collection, serving the community with irreplaceable evidence of the rich history of the region. Archives volunteers worked 632 hours, so that the information held onsite and online is available to anyone, anywhere. The public made 5,000+ searches to the online database and accessed 22,000+ historical records.

We began the Archives' Building Documentation Project, which is now 90% completed, thanks in large part to three industrious summer interns. This project assures that there is a photograph and information for every building in Chestnut Hill, which people can view for reference, renovation, and many other purposes.

During the first quarter of 2016, we improved our communications by launching a monthly e-newsletter, designing an expanded range informational material, and redesigning our entire website.

Literally overnight in January 2016, the new owner of 30 West Chestnut Hill Avenue, a developer, destroyed the mature landscape and filed a demolition permit for this intact historic house. We responded with gusto, thwarting demolition, and continue to work with the developer and neighbors to move forward a preservation-and-development project that is historically and contextually sensitive.

In November 2015, we assisted the Philadelphia Cricket Club and the Woodward family as they negotiated an agreement to permanently conserve 37 acres of open space. As the nation’s first urban accredited land trust, the CH Conservancy has protected more than 130 acres of open space in the Wissahickon Watershed. This open space is critical for the protection of water quality and native flora and fauna.

We launched the first annual Chestnut Hill Architectural Hall of Fame in fall 2015, inviting the public to engage with Chestnut Hill’s extraordinary heritage spanning four centuries. Selected through 1,200 unique public votes, the top five in the inaugural year were the Thomas Mill Bridge, Gravers Lane Train Station, Wissahickon Inn, Margaret Esherick House, and Vanna Venturi House.

We began the big task of updating the National Register listing for the Chestnut Hill Historic District, which our organization originally produced in 1985. As the first step, over summer 2015 we enlisted Dr. David Breiner’s students in Philadelphia University’s College of Architecture to survey hundreds of “contributing” properties and document development changes and newly eligible properties.

In July 2015, following three years of effort, we added the landmark Chestnut Hill Fire Station (1894) to the Philadelphia Register of Historic Places, which means that it will be protected in perpetuity. This win was achieved with the support of a broad coalition including the Fire Department, city agencies, Chestnut Hill's Business District and Community Association, and many neighbors.
