General Manager’s LetterDear Mirasol Members,

I hope you enjoyed a safe and happy holidayseason with your family!

Although there has been much speculation con-cerning the financial well-being of TaylorMorrison and parent company, Taylor Wimpeyin the U.K., I want to reassure you that theirchallenges have yet to harm Mirasol in any way. They have continued to support the growth and

improvements within the community and Club, and the Club team. Theyare very aware and understanding of member concerns, especially intoday’s troubled economy, but have acted in no manner that I foresee as athreat to your investment or quality of lifestyle at Mirasol. They are com-mitted to completing this community with the same integrity and qualitythat they began with.

During these difficult economic times, the Club is now, more than ever,in competition for your discretionary dollars, and we do appreciate yoursupport over the past few months. Although spending at the Club forfood and beverage, spa, and golf products and services increased by 8%from October 1-December 1 (when this letter was written), as comparedwith the same dates in 2007, we would be premature and possibly naiveto expect that this trend will continue in 2009. We are all evaluating ourown personal financial situation and spending habits, and I want toassure you that the Club is conscious of how the economy may be affect-ing your lifestyle. We will continue to focus on ways to add value to yourmembership.

On the back of this issue, you will see our 2008 and 2009 DepartmentalOperating Budget. At the time this issue went to press, I was unable topublish our actual results for 2008, so you will see 11 months of actuals(January-November) and one month of projected results (December). Asyou will see, we far exceeded our budgeted profit, largely due to the resaleincome that the Club retains from keeping 20% of each membership thatis resold. We had 60 resales in 2008, as compared to 46 in 2007, resultingin $1,100,000 in income for the Club. If you are interested in discussingthe Club’s finances, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Wishing you health and happiness.

Sincerely,

Matt Lambert, CCMGeneral [email protected]

Thursday, February 12, 2009To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf

In To the Lighthouse, Woolf sought to come to termswith her parents’ stifling Victorian marriage andevents of her own childhood, as well as to exploresuch feminist issues as the necessity, or even desir-ability, of marriage for women and the difficultiesfor women in pursuing a career in the arts. A strik-ing mix of autobiographical elements, philosophi-cal questions, and social concerns, To the Lighthouseis generally considered to be Woolf’s greatest fic-tional achievement.

Thursday, March 12, 2009The Crucible by Arthur Miller

The Crucible is set against the backdrop of the madwitch hunts of the Salem Witch Trials in the late17th century. It is about a town, after accusationsfrom a few girls, that begins a mad hunt for witchesthat did not exist. Many townspeople were hangedon charges of witchcraft. Miller brings out theabsurdity of the incident with the theme of truthand righteousness. The theme is conveyed throughthe struggles of Miller’s main character, John Proctor.

8 GOLF

From the Director of GolfGreetings! The staff and I hope everyone enjoyed a safe andhappy holiday season with your families.

The month of January golf activities include the Men’s ClubChampionship beginning on Friday, January 10 and concludingwith the overall and flight finals on Sunday, January 18; theLadies’ Guest Day on Tuesday, January 13; and the CouplesMember/Guest that takes place over the weekend of January 24and 25. As always, you may sign up for these events through theForeTees Tee Time System under Event Sign-up.

To assist you with your game, our group clinic program is in fullswing! We have clinics for beginners, intermediate, and advanced golfers segregatedinto groups for both men and women. We also have a mixed clinic for couples whowould like to learn together, or for singles that enjoy mixed golf or might be lookingfor a partner for the various mixed or couples events we have at the Club. All of theseclinics have a maximum 5:1 teacher to student ratio and are designed to assist in yourknowledge and enjoyment of the game. For further information, contact one of ourgolf professionals or visit ForeTees.

For our junior golfers, we have our Saturday Junior Clinics. This month’s clinics will have a different format and meeting time. For juniors ages 5-8, we will be meeting on Saturdays from 9:30 a.m.-10:30 a.m. For our older or more advanced juniors, ages 9-17, we will meet on Saturdays from 2:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m. The older juniors willbe further segregated by age. Both clinics will stress the fundamentals of the game, golfetiquette, and the rules, in addition to safety and, of course, fun! Our hope is that byscheduling the older children later in the day, it will encourage parent/child time onthe course after the clinic.

TIP OF THE MONTHThe following tip on how to deal with pressure while putting is one I received from Phil Mickelson’s coach, and short game guru, Dave Pelz. When you have a big puttand the pressure is on, try what Mr. Pelz teaches his students, both tour players andcountry club golfers. He calls it a putting ritual and here is how you implement theritual into your game. The ritual consists of going through your normal routine ofreading your putt and determining the proper speed and break of the putt. When youare all set and ready to start, your putting ritual begins. Count from one to five at arhythm that feels comfortable to you, while following a set routine with each number. As an example, my ritual starts on the number one with a tap of my putter on theground. On two, I look at the hole and if the putt has a lot of break, I look along theline of my putt. At the number three, I look back at my ball, followed by the numberfour, where I begin my backstroke. At the number five, I make contact with the ball.

If you analyze the ritual, you will see that it takes away the fear of a missed putt andclears your mind of any other thoughts except the ones you have already programmedyourself to think about – that being to make the putt. You should use this ritual on all your putts and not just the pressure putts. I hope this ritual helps and brings youmuch success and enjoyment!

See you on the links,

Terry McDowell

Golf CourseMaintenance NotesJanuary is the start to anew year and also oneof the coldest monthsof the year for SouthFlorida. AlthoughFlorida’s winter seasonis much milder com-pared to the rest of thecountry, we do experi-ence a slowdown or stoppage of turf-grass growth during this time of year.

The plant’s biology will allow vitalnutrients to be stored in the plant’scells to sustain itself during thisstressed time of cold temperatures. Also, during this time, we will experi-ence slower growth and, equallyimportant, lower sunlight intensitycaused by fewer hours of sunlight.Combine these two factors and the endresult is less photosynthetic activitythat will not allow the turfgrass torecover quickly from injuries. Heavytraffic patterns on both golf courseswill be more pronounced, and ballmarks and divots will need severalweeks to fully heal.

As temperatures warm back up to opti-mal growing conditions for Bermudagrass, this recovery process will returnto normal. We ask for your help andpatience during the winter months byrepairing ball marks and filling divots,as well as varying your traffic patternsthroughout the golf courses.

See you on the course,

Michael ThomasDirector of Golf Course Maintenance

Jason, 15, is a relative newcomer to the sport of tennis, but has begun to make his mark in the 16 and under division of theUSTA despite his limited playing experience. In his two mostrecent USTA tournaments, Jason made the consolation semifinalsand main draw semifinals. He also maintains a straight-A grade point average in theSuncoast International Baccalaureate magnet program, and hopes to join the tennisteam to further develop his tennis game. Great job, Jason!
