Human ActsHAN KANG TRANSLATOR: DEBORAH SMITH (GRANTA)

In the wake of a viciously sup-pressed student uprising, a boy searches for his friend’s corpse, a consciousness searches for its abandoned body, and a bru-talised country searches for a voice. In a sequence of inter-connected chapters the victims and the bereaved encounter censorship, denial, forgive-ness and the echoing agony of the original trauma. Human Acts is a universal book, utterly modern and profoundly time-less. Already a controversial bestseller and award-winning book in Korea, it confirms Han Kang as a writer of immense importance.

COOKING

The Heart Goes Last MARGARET ATWOOD (BLOOMSBURY)

HB $36.99This is typical Margaret Atwood speculative fiction (rather than science fiction!). Sometimes bizarre, sometimes exquisite, it goes over the top about three-quarters of the way through. The odd trajectory of the book might be explained by the cir-cumstances in which it was writ-ten. It was originally released as a serial on byliner.com. Atwood received feedback as she wrote and changed the course of the book accordingly. A recom-mend to Atwood fans, and lovers of the morbidly weird.
