With a population of 12 000 inhabitants, Lons is among the first ten towns in the French Department of Pyrénées Atlantiques. It spreads over a particularly large area (90 km of public roads), and has a mixed habitat of estates and protected green areas. Lons inhabitants benefit from numerous infrastructures: sports centre, swimming pool, multimedia library, 3 school complexes with over 900 pupils, two community centres, a music school, a school of theatre, a day-care centre…

ChaLLeNge

Lons town council has undertaken an environmental project and feels strongly about encouraging and spreading the use of emails. Besides allowing the council to decrease its paper costs, emails also provide Lons inhabitants with a fast and direct link to the local authorities. Furthermore, an efficient messaging server is essential to the running of the local authorities who require different email boxes for different business applications such as:

• Electronic document management (dematerialization of invoices, sending by email to the appropriate departments).• Holiday charts.

There is also the need for an efficient running of mobility: 10% of the staff in Lons town council presently work full-time with an iPhone.

After testing several solutions which turned out to be either too costly and complex to administer, or just not complete, our customer chose MDaemon Messaging Server (Pro) for:

• its ease of administration and its global cost,• its ease of use with its webmail interface (WorldClient) which allows users to access their emails wherever they are,• its mobile device management (MDM) features.

The users also appreciated the top performance of MDaemon, its good finish, and the compatibility of its webmail interface with either Windows, Mac or Linux.

arChiteCture

MDaemon is hosted on a dedicated server located in the council’s computer room. Remote sites (7 in total) are interlinked through high speed optical fibre with Lons town council and benefit from a permanent access to MDaemon. Presently, 86 MDaemon accounts are configured; among which 6 are iPhone users connected via ActiveSync for MDaemon.
