Arthritis Ireland Longford Branch:

Arthritis is the single biggest cause of disability in Ireland. It affects almost 1 million people,

damaging joints, causing severe pain, stiffness, immobility and deformity.

Arthritis does not discriminate. It is a disease that can affect anyone from the newborn right

through to the elderly.

Arthritis takes away people’s dignity by preventing them from doing basic, everyday tasks – a

parent, for instance, who can no longer pick up their child; a father unable to hold down a job; a

child unable to play with their friends. That is the reality of arthritis.

Not surprisingly, therefore, arthritis can cause serious levels of depression and social isolation.

According to research conducted by Arthritis Ireland, 3 in 10 people with arthritis say they are sad

and depressed, and 4 in 10 admit that they sometimes find it hard to keep going and that their

arthritis is a constant worry for them.

Unfortunately, a large proportion of people living with arthritis also have at least one other

disease or condition. For example, three in ten people (29%) with arthritis will also have heart

disease. A similar number might also suffer from diabetes (32%). There are also links with

depression (22%), high cholesterol (20%), high blood pressure (19%) and many others. There are

more than 100 different types of arthritis, such as osteoarthritis and a range of inflammatory diseases like

rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, fibromyalgia and juvenile arthritis.

The aim of the Longford branch is to provide an opportunity for people with arthritis to meet

people just like themselves, to share experiences and problems, and to manage their pain,

inflammation and social isolation which is often associated with arthritis. Members of the group

get great support from one another allowing practical information, assistance and friendship.

There is currently no cure for arthritis but staff at the Longford branch organise public information

meetings on up to date treatments. Through their self-management courses and regular exercise

classes it is possible to effectively manage the symptoms of this condition.

Volunteers are always welcome to assist with this active group, to get involved with any of our

established activities or to help with new activities. There is a place for everyone in Arthritis

Ireland. You can tailor the level of your involvement to suit your availability

4. THE GATHERING IRELAND

2013/2014 saw the successful delivery of many Gathering Events throughout Ireland. 2015 also has a lot to offer over sea visitors. Listed below are just some events being held nationwide in March/ April:

Jameson Dublin International Film Festival - March 19th – 29th 2015

There will be more than 130 screenings at this year's Film Festival in Dublin, covering feature

length films, shorts, documentaries, animated movies and a good programme for kids.

Films are screened in Cinemas throughout the city, with most City Centre cinemas involved and a

number in suburban areas also. Most of the films shown during festival are Irish premieres, and

for some it will be their only public screening in Ireland.

Irish film, unsurprisingly, is an important part of the week’s programme.

The annual Volta Awards, called after Ireland’s first cinema, the Volta Picture Theatre in Dublin,

celebrates those who have made significant contributions to the world of film. Previous recipients

of The Volta include Gabriel Byrne, Daniel Day Lewis, Consolata Boyle, George Morrison, Paolo

Sorrentino and Thierry Fremaux.

There are a range of non-screening events on offer also, including very popular Q&A sessions,

public interviews, panel discussions. A quiz organized in association with Dublin City Libraries.

Cork Choral Festival - Wednesday, April 29th, 2015 to Sunday, May 3rd, 2015

Since its inception in 1954 the Cork Choral Festival has grown to become one of the most

important events in the amateur International Choral calendar with choirs travelling from all over

the world to take part in four days of keenly contested competition – and much socialising too!

The Mornington Singers

The festival includes gala concerts, schools concerts, national and international competition, fringe

concerts, many outdoor and public performances, a food fair, an extremely lively festival club and

many other events.

The premier event is the competition for the prestigious Fleischmann International Trophy, hotly

contested each year by some of the finest amateur international choirs. The standard in this

competition is very high – even being inviting to participate is seen as an accolade. These choirs

also perform in a range of additional festival activities throughout the week including fringe

concerts, church and informal performances, so there is plenty of opportunity to enjoy their

singing.

The National Competitions involves over 100 Adult, Youth and School choirs from all over Ireland –

in all there can be more than 5000 singers in the city for the week, so if you enjoy Choral music

this is an event not to miss.

For further information please click CORK INTERNATIONAL CHORAL FESTIVAL WEBSITE

Punchestown Racing Festival- Tuesday April 28th to Saturday May 2nd 2015

Very much a family affair (the local schools even take a day off so students can attend!)

Punchestown Racing Festival is one of Ireland’s most enjoyable, friendly and well attended racing

occasions.

There will be music and entertainment, there are ample restaurants and bars to cater for the

crowds and the racing is always excellent.

The Punchestown Festival is one of the highlights of the racing calendar in Ireland and marks the

end of the National Hunt season both in Ireland and the UK. Every Irish trainer likes to round off

the season with a good outing here, and an increasing number of trainers from the UK are sending

their horses to Punchestown too, making for excellent racing.

The main events are the Champion Chase, the Gold Cup and the Champion Hurdle but all races are

hotly contested as old scores from the previous month’s Cheltenham Festival are settled.

RTE All Ireland Drama Festival 2015- Thursday, April 30th, 2015 to Saturday, May 9th, 2015

One of Europe’s largest amateur theatre festivals this hotly contested battle between drama

groups from all over Ireland invariably stages some terrific productions, many of them reaching

the standard of any professional company.

Nine groups, who have qualified from a series of 35 regional heats, each perform a three-act play

in the final. All performances are open to the public and are very well attended, so book your

tickets in advance! Many professional actors and playwrights cut their teeth in Athlone, including

John B. Keane who’s play Sive had its debut at the festival.

With hundreds of actors, their supporters and regular theatre lovers in town for the duration of

the event, Athlone is a lively spot and there are many fringe events going on, including street

theatre, art exhibitions, workshops and events for young people.

If you enjoy theatre this is a great festival to visit – not only will you see some terrific productions

but it is a very friendly event and it’s easy to get to meet and know Irish people with similar

interests to yours.

New government Agri-Food plans welcomed by Environmental Pillar

The Environmental Pillar welcomes the decision of the Minister Simon Coveney to make the new agri-food strategy a government initiative rather than an industry led plan.

The Environmental Pillar, which represents 28 national environmental NGOs, welcomes the announcement of a committee to prepare the new strategy and the tendering of an environmental analysis of the plan.

We also look forward to further engagement between the committee and the environmental sector on this important national plan, in order to ensure that the Rio Principles of Sustainable Development, balancing the Environmental, Social and Economic components are adhered to.

“We are delighted that the direction of our agriculture sector will no longer be determined by the industry-led initiative, Food Harvest 2020. We welcome a concerted effort from DAFM to create a strategy for the sector that is government led. This is an opportunity to really lay sustainable foundations for our agri sector, at a critical time,” said Cillian Lohan, spokesperson for the Environmental Pillar.

“In the context of our economic recovery and job creation the focus of this strategy needs to be on long term sustainability. Our competitive advantage, as Minister Coveney points out, is our high quality, “green” agri-produce. Incorporating the value of the ecosystem services that underpin these outputs is a critical challenge for this new strategy. There is no reason why we can’t produce high quality food while protecting and enhancing our environment.

“We look forward to engaging with the writing of the strategy from the outset. All interested citizens should take the time to input into this new strategy. Minister Coveney is providing the public with a chance to assert their democratic right and contribute their views while the strategy is being formed. If you put any food in your mouth today, then this affects you. We are quick to complain about government making decisions behind closed doors and without consultation, let’s not let this opportunity to input into such an important sector pass any of us by.”

Yesterday the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Simon Coveney, announced his plans for a new agri-food strategy up to 2025.

This strategy will be developed by a Committee of leading figures from the agri-food sector and other stakeholders.

The aim of the plan will be to maximize the contribution of the sector to economic growth, job creation and environmental sustainability over the next decade.

The Minister said that he expected the new Strategy to be published in July 2015. He also announced that Mr. John Moloney is to chair the Strategy Committee

Minister Coveney also opened a public consultation on the Strategy, with submissions invited from both organisations and individuals.

The Minister also announced the opening of tenders for an environmental analysis of the 2025 agri-food strategy including an Appropriate Assessment and a Strategic Environment Assessment

Action Plan for Jobs, Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation The Action Plan for Jobs is a whole-of-Government initiative under which all Government Departments and Agencies work together to deliver on the agreed action points for each year. The Action Plan for Job's Five Strategic Ambitions are:

1. To support 100,000 additional jobs by 2016 2. To get Ireland back to a top-five ranking in international competitiveness 3. To stimulate the domestic economy and generate employment in locally traded sector 4. To build an indigenous engine of growth that drives up the export market share of Irish

The Department of Social Protection will host the annual Social Inclusion Forum on 25th March

2015. The Social Inclusion Forum is part of the institutional framework put in place by the

Government to support the development of the National Action Plan for Social Inclusion 2007-

2016 (NAPinclusion).

The event provides a forum for wider public consultation and discussion on social inclusion issues

between officials from Government Departments, Community and Voluntary Organisations and

people experiencing poverty in relation to NAPinclusion. The Forum has ensured that people who

are directly affected by poverty and social exclusion and those who work with them have a voice

in the development of the policies that directly affect them, and in the ways that the policies are

implemented.

The theme of the 2015 Forum is social policy innovation for social inclusion and will include a

discussion on updating and extending NAPinclusion and workshops on social housing, migrant

poverty, prevention and early intervention services for children and youth exclusion. See draft

This will be matched by national funding to bring the total investment for the 2014-2020 European Social Fund for Ireland to €1.15 billion.

The European Social Fund will focus on getting people back into jobs and on creating opportunities for young people and disadvantaged groups. I'm confident that it can make a significant difference

Eurostat publishes figures on national minimum salaries in the EU

According to figures released this week by Eurostat, Ireland (€1,482) had the fifth highest monthly minimum wage in the EU as of 1 January 2015, after Luxembourg, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany. Monthly minimum wages in the EU range from €184 in Bulgaria to €1,923 per month in Luxembourg. Ireland and Greece are the only countries in the EU having a national minimum wage where the minimum wage has not risen since 2008. In Greece, the national minimum wage on 1 January 2015 was 14% lower than the 2008 figure.

When calculated in terms of purchasing power standards, the monthly minimum wage in Ireland was 6th highest in the EU at 1,238 on 1 January 2015 (up 10% from 1,126 in 2008). When adjusted for purchasing power standards, the monthly minimum wage in the EU ranged from 380 per month in Bulgaria to 1,561 in Luxembourg.

The monthly minimum wage for Ireland was calculated on the basis of (hourly rate x 39 hours x 52 weeks) / 12 months. The national minimum wage is €8.65 per hour.

EU Commission wants urgent action on energy markets

An overhaul of the electricity market, a tougher negotiation strategy with third country suppliers, 10% of European electricity passing through interconnectors, more EU funding for energy efficiency, a new renewables energy package: just some of the things the European Commission announced today (25/2/2015) in a new, more urgent approach to energy strategy.

Jean-Claude Juncker, Commission President, said "For too long, energy has been exempt from the fundamental freedoms of our Union. Current events show the stakes – as many Europeans fear they may not have the energy needed to heat their homes. I want the energy that underpins our economy to be resilient, reliable, secure and growingly renewable and sustainable."

Ireland is singled out as one of the countries which are insufficiently connected with the energy supply available in the rest of the EU (see graphic below). Ireland, along with countries like the UK,

Spain and Portugal, has yet to reach a target of 10% of electricity interconnector capacity, seen as the minimum amount to aim for by 2020.

And as one of the EU's most import-dependent countries, Ireland's economy is highly exposed to international energy markets for fossil fuels. In the EU overall, wholesale electricity prices are 30% higher in the EU than in the US, and wholesale gas prices 100% higher. Europe's Gas supply

The Commission now wants a tougher strategy for EU governments negotiating with third country suppliers of gas, in particular. The Commission wants more oversight of gas negotiations with third countries before contracts with non-EU countries are signed, rather than after. It also wants to move towards standard contract clauses that will avoid pressure to bend European rules.

This means the Commission will review the Intergovernmental Agreements Decision and propose some changes. The Commission will also push for more transparency in gas contracts and will ask for changes in the Security of Gas Supply Regulation.

Fáilte Ireland Launches Seventh EDEN Competition with Tourism and Local Gastronomy as This Year’s Theme

The search has begun to find the region in Ireland which has best used its local food potential to grow visitor numbers. Fáilte Ireland, is inviting entries for the EDEN competition, an EU project promoting sustainable tourism development models across the European Union, which is currently being held in 29 member states. Held every two years, EDEN focusses on a different aspect of tourism each time and this year’s theme is Tourism and Local Gastronomy with the winning destination to receive a promotional photo shoot to market itself as well as €5,000 towards highlighting its attractions. The winning entry will also represent Ireland at a ceremony/exhibition in Brussels later this year. Fáilte Ireland are now looking for Emerging tourism destinations in Ireland who have developed a specific tourism offering based on their local gastronomy that balances sustaining the local environment with the promotion of viable tourism. Eligible destinations will be those: • that are “small” or “emerging” or “off the beaten track” or “non-traditional” (with visitor numbers from low to very low in comparison with the national average); • shall offer authentic Tourism experiences; • that have a well-developed gastronomy that is characteristic of the region. The aim of the EDEN project is to draw attention to the value, diversity and shared characteristics of European tourist destinations and to promote destinations where economic growth is pursued in such a way as to ensure the social, cultural and environmental sustainability of tourism.

Commenting on the competition, John Mulcahy, Fáilte Ireland’s Head of Hospitality, said: “As an Island, Ireland has long been recognised for the beauty of its landscape and seascapes in addition for the warmth of its people. But in recent years, visitors are now coming for our food and drink offering also. Our clean seas and rich fertile soil result in having the best raw ingredients that are of critical importance to Ireland’s attractiveness to our tourists. “Throughout Ireland, the growth of food activities and attractions has regenerated local economies and communities. Therefore, I would encourage participation in initiatives, such as this European Destination of Excellence Competition, which can only but boost the profile of these destinations further.” Competition details are available here [Application Form] and at www.failteireland.ie or contact [email protected] for further details or your local regional tourism office. The closing date for entries is Wednesday April 8th 2015. Eligible destinations will be those where the visitor density is low; where the tourism product has been developed using local and regional food experiences as an asset while protecting the environment and meeting the needs of visitors and local residents; and where the tourism offer is managed in such a way as to ensure its social, cultural and environmental sustainability. Fáilte Ireland is appointing a panel of adjudicators to select the top destinations and the overall winner. The evaluation process will short-list the top three applications for on-site assessments during the week of Monday 11th May. This assessment will allow each applicant an opportunity to provide further evidence of their Tourism and Local Gastronomy destination of excellence. - See more at: http://www.failteireland.ie/News-Features/News-Library/Search-is-on-for-Region-with-best-use-of-food-pote#sthash.SrIxmqJo.dpuf

Gender Matter Workshops

As part of the Health Service Executive’s (HSE) commitment to addressing health inequalities, it has funded the National Women’s Council of Ireland (NWCI) to conduct a series of workshops with women and men to hear and document their experiences of health services in Ireland from a gender perspective. The output from the consultations will inform the development of health inequalities action arising from the forthcoming updating of the HSE Health Inequalities Framework and the forthcoming HSE Maternity Services Charter.

As gender has such a powerful impact on health and wellbeing outcomes and cuts across other forms of inequality such as poverty, economic disadvantage, disability, age, ethnicity or sexual orientation I am anxious that the views of women and men whose voices are largely absent from more mainstream discussions on health are included in this process.

SPORTS CAPITAL GRANT 2015

We note with interest the recent announcement from The Department of Tourism, Travel and

Sport (DTTAS) that some €40million will be made available in Sports Capital Grants in 2015 (details

and further information below).

It is our understanding that many clubs will be eagerly awaiting the opportunity to apply for this

assistance, given the need for a number to upgrade their facilities.

In some instances, there is an onus on groups to claim grants retrospectively, were this obligatory

here, many clubs may find it difficult to access such bridging finance from the main financial

institutions to pay contractors first, and subsequently claim the corresponding grant.

Likewise, a shortfall in access to project match funding may deter many of our most enthusiastic

clubs from realising their long held development ambitions.

UCIT (Ireland) Ltd. are a not-for-profit-taking, voluntary led and open membership based

organisation which specialises in the provision of Social Finance to community based

organisations. We have, over the last 15 years, invested in excess of €50million in more than 350

communities across the island. We are keen to ensure that a lack of access to loan finance is not

the deciding factor in the success or otherwise of such community projects, subject to a proven

repayment capacity being determined.

Noteworthy points on our service include:

1. No arrangement fees on term loans

5. Lending rates to date have not exceeded 6%
