Mrs Desforges (our LRC Manager) was very proud

to present Nathan in Year 7 Anderson his certificate

congratulating him on reading over 2 million words

since starting at Longfield Academy.

He has read 33 books across various genres to

achieve this with an average score of 94.8% and

earning 322.5 points using Accelerated Reader by

Renaissance Learning.

Well done Nathan!

Congratulations to Nathan!

GOLDEN TICKETS Last year Longfield introduced the ‘Golden Ticket Scheme’ for Year

11 students. It took off so well we have decided to run it again this

year.

Golden tickets are issued when a student goes above and beyond

in their efforts to ensure they are prepared for their exams,

whether that be completing some extra work in class, attending a

revision session or completing exam practise.

337 tickets were received by 119 different students

Congratulations to Ellie Sedgwick for receiving 8 golden tickets. Total tickets per college:

Solutions for the Planet

Science

On Monday 8th January Longfield Academy

were visited by Solutions for the Planet.

This organisation goes into secondary

schools and helps the students learn about

sustainability and entrepreneurship, with

the use of science, technology, engineering

and maths. Our year 7 and 8 students

worked with a number of year 6 children

from different primary schools.

“Solutions for the planet was an amazing experience, it really taught us

about business and entrepreneurship through the subject of science.”

“When the organisation comes to your school, you do the big ideas day

which is a day when you work in groups to try and create a solution for

the world's problems.”

Solutions for the Planet is a great way of learning about our world and its

problems.

Overall Solutions for the Planet was a very fun experience where we

learnt a lot of interesting facts.

Tomorrow’s Engineers

On Thursday 25th January we were visited by Tomorrow’s

Engineers and Learn by Design to talk to us about engineering.

The students had a lot of fun while learning about renewable

energy. It was great to see the students using Science, Maths

and design skills.

Firstly, we looked at different types of engineering and how

they can be used in everyday life.

We then talked about renewable and non-renewable energy

resources and how different types of non-renewable energy

are best for different countries due to their climate and where

they are based geographically.

It was then time to test our skills by wiring up electric cars and

charging them to see how far they could go. We charged them

to different volts and measured how far they would go. We

then plotted it on graphs and made a prediction we could test.

The best group was the one to get their prediction right. It was

a fun lesson and we learned a lot about engineering.

Written by Emily Robinson and Max Whatley ( Year 7)

Did you know that wind

is the best form of energy

for the UK, but Sweden

use wind, solar and hy-

droelectricity?

e Longfield Sleeping Beauty Performance

Once again, the Expressive Arts departments were very proud to present this year’s pantomime ‘Sleeping Beauty’... Eventually! Despite the performance being postponed. Students have continued to work with diligence and professionalism, and the result was a performance that was funny, clever and that really showed off their talents for the stage.

Leading the cast as our titular character was year 8 Hollie Pendrigh, assisted by

fellow year 8s, ‘Kitty’ (Shania Durling), Prince Orlando (Alfie Lewis) and year 9 Sasha Humphreys as Fairy Godmother ‘Fairy Peaceful.’ Standing beside them were King and Queen of Wollycombe and Billy the Butler (Kieran Carr), working together to defeat the evil Carabosse (Olivia Williams) and her feline side-kick, Spindleshanks.

All in all, this was the youngest cast we have ever had! You would never have

guessed, however, that for a large number of our cast, this was their first time on stage. Back stage, the students were nothing but professional and calm - if only the same could be said of the staff! The students even took control of some of the choreography, headed by year 11s Lauren Hunt and Hope Noordally, who pushed the students to perfection.

We had villagers, cats, fairies and zombies (of course), all of them worked

together to create a performance that banished the January Blues.

Our next show will be a musical to be performed in the Summer term. More information about auditions to follow.

Longfield Rotary Young Chef

The Rotary club of Darenth Valley held their annual young chef competition at Longfield Academy on the December 13th.

This was an early heat of the Rotary International Competition, covering the whole of Great Britain and Ireland. The judges, (Rotarians Josie Morgan and Ricky Pristernik) were impressed by the high standard of the three course lunches, delivered by three students.

James Bishop of New Ash Green was declared the winner. He then went on to the Rotary District Finals in Maidstone on the 27th January and excelled in winning that heat too. He will now go on to the Regional Young Chef Competition held in Morden.

Many congratulations James, and a well done to all the chefs that took part, it was a tough competition.

Year 10

It is with great pleasure to announce that Addaction’s ‘Mind and Body’ programme is going

to be delivered to Year 10 students.

The early intervention programme explores a range of strategies to help participants better

manage their emotions and anxieties and looks to promote positive communication with

others.

An independent evaluation completed by the University of Bath in 2017 evidenced positive

improvements in participant’s emotional wellbeing and reductions in a range of risk-taking

behaviours including self-harm.

The programme is voluntary and young people do not have to take part if they do not wish

to. The schedule for sessions has been designed to minimise disruption to core subjects.

Students who would benefit from the intervention are identified after taking part in an

anonymous survey.

If we have any significant concerns regarding your child’s wellbeing or safety, we will con-

tact you directly and the school will be notified if appropriate.

If you have any questions about the programme, please contact the office on

01795 500 882.

Salha Abdulgialil in year 13 at Longfield Academy, got published in the 7-8 edition of The Scholar after submitting an essay originally written as part of a Uni Pathways course through The Brilliant Club. In the essay, Salha argued and explained why she would not go to space if she was given the opportunity, but would rather help engineers and researchers on the ground make space travel safer for others. Salha's work was rated as excellent by the review panel and is one of the first Uni Pathways articles to be published in The Scholar. The essay was one of only 44 essays selected from hundreds of submis-sions from all over UK for the academic year of 2016-2017.

The journal is free to download from http://www.thebrilliantclub.org/news-and-views/the-scholar/ for anyone that would like to read the excellent essay.
