Guhring offers many Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) applied coatings for metal cutting, wear resistance, forming, anti-corrosion and even decorative applications. When Guhring introduced TiN coating to cutting tools with the first PVD coated HSS drill, we revolutionized the industry. Since then, Guhring’s R&D department has continually led the way in developing new coatings to meet the ever-changing demands of manufacturers.

Guhring’s new nano-FIREX® coating is a variation of the popular FIREX® coating for universal applications. Like FIREX®, this new coating is a TiAlN based multi-layer coating that imparts extreme

wear and heat resistance. Similar to FIREX®, nano-FIREX® can be used in a wide range of applications, which is unlike many niche coatings that work well in a narrow band of materials or operations. The exciting difference with nano-FIREX® lies in the layering structure of the coating. The new nano-FIREX® coating is applied with a completely new process, a micro thin-film coating PVD gradient layering process that produces a completely new coating structure. Although the final thickness of the nano-FIREX® is similar to FIREX® (3 to 5 microns), the micro thin-film gradient structure improves the wear resistance characteristics of the coating and can extend tool life in many applications.
