CREATIVE PHONICS: A GREAT CHOICE!
The goal of a good literacy program should be to teach students to become
fluent readers as well as able writers of the language. At the end of a
literacy program students should be able to read with comprehension at a
comfortable speed and decode (sound out) unfamiliar words when necessary.
In addition, they must be able to write using natural language with proper
spelling.
There are two strategies to learn to read and write:
• Top down
• Bottom up
Top Down is when you start with whole stories, then look at sentences,
separate words and finally look at the alphabet letters.
Bottom up is when you learn the phonics first – understanding the
relationship between the sounds of the language and the symbols that
represent each sound. Then go onto Letter Formation and Spelling. Making
words, sentences and stories.
In Bottom-Up strategies, students are also taught to write using correct
spelling. This way of teaching could be compared to building a house from the
foundation up, adding each piece to the next to create an entire structure.
There are advantages to both Top-Down and Bottom-Up methods. When using
Top-Down Strategies, the learners enjoy reading and listening to meaningful
stories and writing creatively on their own.
The advantages of using Bottom-Up Strategies are also significant. The
students master the writing system and understand how to decode and
pronounce words. Mastery in both fluency and writing is the goal - a
necessary achievement for any successful program.

Selecting a balanced literacy program that include four basic elements is
absolutely mandatory.
1. Reading whole stories of natural text.
2. Creative writing of whole texts and stories.
3. Letter formation and spelling.
4. Phonics Mastery.
The Top Down program starts with 1 and then 2, 3, and 4.
The Bottom Up method starts with 4 and then 3, 2, 1.
In languages that have an alphabet based on the sound system of the
language, mastery of the sound/symbol correspondences is the key that
unlocks the world of reading and writing. Research into successful early
literacy programs supports systematic instruction in phonics as the best
strategy for achieving the goal of reading competency.
In Creative Phonics, therefore, the teacher takes the learner step by step in
building a phonics foundation while providing exposure to whole stories and
creative writing. The strength of the Creative Phonics method lies in the fact
that it is a carefully designed phonics method that can be developed in any
language at the local level by local teachers without a formalized primer or
other expensive materials. What makes it so effective is that every language
is individually analyzed and the sequence of introduction to the sound/symbol
correspondences is determined by frequency and then by productivity (See
the Creative Phonics Manual).
Due to a carefully sequenced phonics introduction, the goal of moving quickly
to whole stories and creative writing is not only feasible, but assures that
what is read and written is based on what is known. The early stages in which
available known letters are restricted is very short due to the order in which
the letters are taught to the students. Meaningful words and phrases can be
produced within the first few lessons and stories after just a few weeks in
the course. Creative Phonics, therefore, is a responsible and balanced choice
when selecting a method to use to teach learners to read and write.

Creative Phonics works extremely well in languages with a simple or
transparent alphabet, like Tok Pisin. Many languages have a more complicated
system in which some of the sounds are represented by two or more letters
(ng, mbw).
In these languages, Creative Phonics is still a great choice because these
letter combinations are taught as a single unit. For this reason, the more
comprehensive term orthography is used instead of the term alphabet, which
is often thought of as a list of single letters, and the term phonogram is used
because multiple single letters can represent one sounds, for example /ng/).
That’s why we are talking about sounds and not the alphabet letters. Always
working from the known to the unknown.
If facing these particular challenges, of no books or resources available,
Creative Phonics provides the solutions because the only materials needed
for the activities are simple and readily available in most places in the world.
Many of the activities for the lessons can be done in the dirt or sand using a
stick for writing or with chalk and blackboards made from cardboard and
black paint. Handmade bamboo or reed pens and feather or quill pens can be
used with ink made from local materials. Chalk or charcoal even works well on
plain boards! Local materials such as feed bags, bark cloth, sticks and stones
can be substituted for expensive store bought goods.
Best of all, no fancy primers or graded readers are necessary. The only
requirements are:
1. An orthography that has been accepted by the people.
2. A few stories and texts written in the language
3. Some local and natural materials

SUMMARY
The goal of every literacy program is that the learner will become a fluent
reader who is able to read with comprehension everything available in print in
the language and is able to write well. When designing a good program, no
matter where the starting point which is dictated by the method being used,
each of the four parts of literacy will find its way into the curriculum:
1. Reading whole stories of natural text.
2. Creative writing of whole texts and stories.
3. Phonics mastery.
4. Letter formation and spelling.
Due to the fact that numbers 3 and 4 above have been shown through
research to be an effective approach for attaining literacy competency , the
Creative Phonics method begins by building a firm foundation in the mastery
of the relationship between the smallest written parts of the language and
the important sounds in the language. Reading whole stories to the learners,
particularly ones that have been written by the learners themselves, and
allowing them to write creatively, quickly become part of the program due to
the fact that the most frequent and most productive sound/symbol
combinations are introduced first.
Literacy programs in languages with a well-designed orthography in which the
sound/symbol relationship is simple and consistent, will discover that Creative
Phonics works exceptionally well. Even when the orthography is more
challenging, Creative Phonics provides the teacher with a system that
provides clarity and structure. Finally, when resources both in materials and
funding are limited for a literacy program, Creative Phonics is certainly the
logical choice of methodology.

Six Stages of Learning to Read
1. Phonemic awareness. You have to teach students to be aware of the
phonemes of their language. They must learn to hear them in words, split
words up into phonemes, join phonemes together into words.
2. Letter-Phoneme connection. You have to teach that each letter has a
sound. (Watch out - the name of the letter is not the same as the sound of
the letter. Letter names are not very helpful for teaching how to read. Teach
them later.)
3. Blending Letter/Phonemes into words. You have to teach how to join the
letters and their sounds into words. VERY VERY IMPORTANT STAGE!
4. Word-Meaning connection. You have to teach that when you read a word,
that word has a meaning. It is not just a collection of sounds.
5. Blending words into sentences. You have to teach about punctuation, that
commas and fullstops help you to read sentences.
6. Sentence-Meaning connection for stories. You have to show that a
sentence is meaningful and interesting, and might be part of a story.
