Riding eastward through the hills, Mar-shal Steve Larrimore turned and stared be-hind him for the tenth time that afternoon.Outlined against the setting sun were thethree riders who had been pursuing him allday.

Lounging in the saddle beside Steve,Roke Blandon grinned wickedly and tuggedmeaningfully at his ropes.

"Might as well untie me, and let me go,Marshol," sneered Roke. "Those are myboys back there. They'll never let you tokeme back to Carson City."

It was almost sunset and Steve was stilltwenty miles from Carson City, riding herdon Roke Blandon, the toughest gunslingerin the territory.

Blandon's gang was closing in. If theyhod their woy, Steve would never live longenough to see his prisoner face the murdercharge waiting for him bock In CorsonCity.

All they had to do was v/oit until night-falland then close in. With three guns to

his one, larrimore wouldn't have a prayer.Just then Steve spotted the shack nes-

tling in the hollow. Steve knew the place. Itbelonged to Dink Dover, an old prospec-tor. Dink was seldom home this time of theyear. Most likely he was out scouring thehills looking for a bonanza.

Steve spurred his horse into the shackyard. There was a lood of firewood dryingnot for from the house. It looked like oldDink was getting set for the winter.

"You aiming to fort up in here?"sneered Roke. "Why, the boards in thaishack wouldn't stop a pea-shooter."

Inside the shack he looked about him.The place was almost bare except for afew utensils, a coal-oil lamp on the tableand o tin of coal oil in the corner of theroom.

It was that five-gallon container of coaloil that gove Steve the big idea.

"All right, Roke, sit down on thai chair."Urged by Steve's gun, Roke sat down.

In an instant Sieve had him bound andgagged. Then the Marshal went to work.He grabbed the container of coal oil andheaded oul into the gathering night. He'dhove to work fast. Blandon's boys wouldbe there soon and he'd hove to be readyfor them. When Larrimore 's pursuers hit the yardof the prospector's shack the place waspitch dark. "We saw your horse, Larri-more," one of them shouted, "Come onout, or

At that Instant o dark shadow detacheditself from the woodpile and darted for theshock. It was Larrimore. Behind him thewoodpile, soaked with coal oil, flared upinto a huge bonfire.

For one long startled moment the threeoutlaws stared at the towering flames. That morrfenl was enough for Larrimore.

His guns spoke once, twice, and ye;again. His bullets disarmed Roke ; men,Blinded by the flame they never evenknew where the gunfire was coming fromuntil it was too late.

As he herded Roke's men into the shackSieve said, "All right, men, you werelonely for Roke. Now, I reckon you can'keep him company in the jail back "at Cor-son City."
