Pomp, Pageantry and Ceremonies in London
Buckingham Palace-the Queens official London
home, offers you an everyday famous show the cere-
mony of changing
guards .
Built for the Duke of
Buckingham in 1703,
the original house was
substantially remod-
eled over the years. In
1837, Queen Victoria
made Buckingham
Palace the Queens
home.
The Trooping the Colour
Ceremony in honour of the
Sovereigns birthday is one of
the most popular ceremonies in
London. The Troops, in full
dress uniforms, are from the
Household Cavalry and the
Guards Division. The route
from Buckingham Palace to
Horse Guards parade is deco-
rated with banners and flags
Modern London is a hybrid creature formed from
ancient cities of London and Westminster evolving
over the centuries into what is today a sprawling
metropolis comprising some 7500000 inhabitants in
an area of about 480 square meters.
London is at least two thousand years old and was
settled long before the first Roman invasion. Over
the centuries the City has jealously guarded itsindependence which has been recognized by a se-
ries of royal charters.
The medieval face of London was dramatically
changed by the Great Fire which broke out on 2 nd
of September 1666 in Pudding Lane and destroyed
over 13000 houses and 80 churches.
Despite the extensive development that has
changed Londons pre-war skyline almost beyond
recognition, the best of its administrative, commer-
cial and domestic building is more historical than
modern.
Many historical monu-
ments were built over the
centuries as a nations
tribute to their sovereign
or in the memory of wars
heroes.
Looking at a map the emerald
paths of Londons parks standout like islands in the very cen-
ter of its vast sea of streets and
buildings. Hyde Park, St. Jamess Park, Green
park and Regent Park are only some of the most
beautiful Londons parks.
No journey to London would be complete without a
visit to the British Museum, the largest and the
most important cultural center in the world, inau-
gurated in 1753 and opened to the public in 1759.
