LONDON RECORDS
These consist of Izmir church registers deposited by Chaplains in 1995-8 to the Guildhall Library (subsequently transferred to the London Metropolitan Archives) for safe keep, as well
as consular and diplomatic records kept in the Public Records office in Kew, London.
It was considered important to review and transcribe at least part of the registers kept in Lon-
don, to allow wider access to readers in different countries and help build a picture of the his-
tory and development of the Levantine communities by cross referencing with other sources, including testimonies.
The Metropolitan Archives:
Document 1 (Ms 29744A) – Loose leaf
William Barker, son of Thomas & Sarah Barker of Bakewell in Derbyshire, born 31th
Jan 1739, was married in Smyrna to Thora Robin daughter of Giovanni Batista & Katerina Robin
(French subjects) born in Smyrna August 1739, by the Lutheran minister Christophoro
Guighilma Ludecke, according to the rites of the church of England, the 16th Oct 1763.
Children: Sarah / Thomas (x) / William / Gratia / John / Robert / George, 1764-1774
Some christened by Dutch minister B.Keun
Some christened by English minister B.Clendon
Flora the wife of William Barker died 16 Dec 1775
1776 remarried Dutch subject Elizabeth Mary Schnell who was born in Smyrna 1760, married
by B.Keun.
Children: Arthur Francis (x) / Richard / Marianna / James (x) / Mary / Edward / Peter (x) / Francis (x) / Frederick / Louisa / Samuel / Henry Richards / Benjamin, 1777-1797
Sworn to the truth of above, signed before me 1806
Also signed by André Slaars (resident 50 years), Robert Wilkinson (resident 34 years).
Done due to the ‘Consularian house fire’ 1797.
Notes:
1- It was obviously considered important to register William Barker’s marriages and children
following the destruction of records in the consulate (arson1f-p.39
) fire. This demonstrates his
eminence in the community at the time.
2- The x marks placed by some of the children I took to indicate they were already deceased.
Despite this mortality, Mr Barker was able to sire 15 children, a remarkable number even for that time. Similar productivity amongst early Levantines ensured the future viability and
spread of the community.
3- Assuming Robert Wilkinson is the same as that buried in Buca, he came to Izmir in 1772,
aged 21, and the tombstone informs us he was the Consul for Denmark, Sweden and US. As-
suming Andre Slaars is his name sake buried and marked as a merchant in the Dutch ceme-
tery, he came to Izmir in 1756 aged 17.
4- We are informed by Donald Simpson’s report that William Barker died the year the Le-
vant ‘Factory’ was dissolved, 1825, and that he was the oldest member of the company which he joined in 1759. Thus from calculating we know he joined the company aged 20 and died
aged 86. His tomb is not at Buca since this is before that cemetery was established, as is likely
to have been in the now non-existent ‘Caravan bridge’ cemetery.

Notes:
Cross referencing with the cemetery based list reveals the following:
1- Errors made transcribing poorly legible tombstones can be corrected with this list assuming this list to be accurate; e.g. no 56, cemetery Erna, here Emma Winterhalter.
2- Some names here are not visible on the ground in the cemetery, as some have been buried in other cemeteries, as indicated in the register and here highlighted in orange.
Though minor this will help to reconstruct the burials in the now non-existent ceme-
tery of Caravan Bridge. Other names highlighted in grey appear to be buried here and were either not marked with a headstone or the ravages of time have since erased it.
Many of these ‘invisibles’ seem to be ‘outsiders’ to the community, thus with no close
relatives around to pay for a tomb.
3- Possibly the most mysterious ‘outsider’ recorded in the register was the German,
Karl Kockler, a 79 year old man who died in the last year of World War II. Despite be-
ing a Christian attested by the fact that the ceremony was officiated by the chaplain A.J.Westcott, he was buried in the Turkish Moslem cemetery ‘near Buca’, possibly the
one still in use on the outskirts of the district. Being German or an ‘outsider’ cannot be
6
enough reason for this ‘punishment’. However clues are insufficient, the feelings run-
ning high in the last year of the war could be a factor, though at his age it is unlikely he was involved in espionage. The word ‘concentration’ seems to make no sense, there
was no internment of German nationals in Turkey, and at his age it seems unlikely he
was connected with the Nazi concentration camps. However the word seems to have
been ‘weighed’ and used accordingly as the entry in the register first half writes it, then scribbles it, then writes it in full.
4- Of the two British soldiers who died during the Second World War, in 1944, Sadler died in Afyon, supporting Al Simes recollection of joint use of that base with Turkish
forces. The Buca based soldier, Wenholme, was possibly based in the former Catholic
seminary as it was used for a time as army barracks, as recalled by Antoine Karakulak. The Turkish army position, though still not acknowledged, seemed to have been far
from strictly neutral, though probably limited to intelligence sharing.
5- The diligence of the upkeep of the registers seems to vary with the various chap-
lains, with S.W.H.Bird detailing addresses which offer us the means to match the pre-
sent houses (once the address has been correlated to the modern numbers), with their
former occupants. Later chaplains were at times quite sloppy; entry no 94 was only re-corded with her first name, as Carmen, but correlating name and date with cemetery
survey shows this to be a Giraud. Another indication of sloppiness is the fact that there
have been many (50) burials in the Bornova cemetery not recorded in the register (~40%), the listing:
1929 Pudovich Gregorie, 1931 Pierre Charles de Senn, 1933 Charles Henry Wilkin, 1934 Fernand de Cramer, Herve Pierre Reggio, 1935 Beatrice G. Keun,, 1936 Charles B. Maltass,
Sophie Crespi, 1937 Arthur W. Drake, 1940 Barrington A. Tristram, 1942 Adela Joly, 1943
Peter Petro P. Krivenko, Christian Denotovitch, 1949 Frederick de Cramer, John Hanson,
Carlo Molinari, 1950 Christine Wilkinson, 1951 Richard de Cramer, 1957 Milfred Maud Pet-ter, Anastasia Nostidimes, Anthony E. Edwards, 1958 Richard Ward English, 1959 Donald
Whittall, 1960 S.W.Rawlin, Anna Mary Cramer, 1963 Mary Elizabeth Abraham, R.O.
Stower, Thetis Mattheys, 1964 Marie Isabelle Giraud, 1965 Llewellyn Abraham, 1966 Made-line Wilkinson, Grace Joly, Ruth Madeline Giraud, James Lee Carver, 1967 Linda Keun, Ivy
Balliani, Magdalene Blanche Whittall, Edward H. Joly, 1969 James R. Giraud, 1970 Amy
Joly, Jennie Mason, Jeanne de Senn, 1975 Henrietta Mary Wood, 1989 Max Steinbuchel,
1993 Martha Toase, Joyce Edith Mary Andrew, Christopher Paul Panas, 1994 Pipsy Mark-ovich, 1995 Philip Berwick Thompson, 1996 Eldon James Giraud.
5- The register is no3 for Bornova, the preceeding 2 having been destroyed in the upheavals of 1922. The cemetery also suffered major damage at this time, thus the picture pre 1922 is
far from complete.

Notes:
13
1- The Maine was the principal vessel (a hospital ship) on which the refugees from the 1922
fire were taken to the island of Malta. 2- The listing shows the profession of the German archaeologist George Weber as a teacher,
possibly how he financed his digs.
3- Many of the children seem to have one of their middle names same as surnames (#39
Forbes, #40 Griffith, #49 Rees, #56B Blackler, #122 Whittall etc) in the community. This seems point to mothers giving their offspring her maiden name as a middle name.
We have confirmation of these instances where the maiden name is stated, eg (#58 Grif-
fitt, #69 Fercken, and #88, #92 Blackler). 4- The modern names for Adelia (#29), Adrianople (#52) and Angora (#66) are Antalya,
Edirne and Ankara respectively; the presence of consulates in these relatively minor
towns, points to the strategic importance the British foreign office deemed Turkey to be worth.
5- The location of abode outside town is a good indicator of the profession of the individual
even if not indicated. Thus Sokia (Söke) - #33, Nazli (Nazilli) - #60 were a centre of liq-
uorice processing by McAndrews and Forbes co, Aidin #25 and Saraykoy #39 were sta-tions along the ORC line. #84, #87 – Azizieh and #91 Nazli in the profession entry
openly state the railway significance of these outposts.
6- One of the unknowns the list has thrown up is the company known as the ‘British Eastern agency’ for which Arthur Heginbotham worked for at least between 1899 and 1904, ac-
tivities of which I know nothing about.
7- The above listing shows the same couples baptising their newest child, indicating the size of some of the families. The table below shows those couples with 3 or more baptisms
(not necessarily synonymous with the number of children they had or survived infancy)

name

8- From information supplied by Willem Daniels, Oscar Geoffrey de Jongh (#138) died in 1943 (aged 26) while serving with the Free Dutch Forces, ‘Princess Irene Brigade’ and
was selected by the RAF to serve as a pilot officer. His place of death in official records
is given as Norwell Woodhouse in Nottinghamshire. 9- Again with information from W. Daniels, the correct spelling for Marjory (Rees) #54, is
Margery, and similarly should be Dorothy (birth certificate and personal preference) #57,
not Dorothea (de Jongh) as referred to her in the list. 10- We see from the entry of the 1932 baptism that the father, Walter Pengelley was still in
Buca at the time, before he went to Africa to farm as recollected by Mr Edward de
Jongh.

Notes:
1. The striking preponderance of Smyrna abodes over Boujah shows the cemetery was not a place of rest just for the local Anglicans. It also shows the considerable popula-
tion that lived in Izmir at the time.
2. From entry 36 we see the Spence family were involved in the Church of Scotland
missionary centre in Alsancak and thus have a minimum date for its opening, giving it a minimum 50 years of operation before it was destroyed in the great fire.
3. Spelling as indicated as suspect with ‘sp’ entry for no:32 is Borell, as matched in the
cemetery survey. 4. The blank first named Cadoux (#50) must be Theodora as is the only one left in the
cemetery unmatched (dates agree).
5. Cross checking with the cemetery survey results revealed the following: For the period 1869-1879 no of burials:
Registry 49
Cemetery 59
Matches (vis.)18 (highlighted in grey) Invis matches 4 (highlighted in blue)
Total matches 22
The ‘visible’ matches are those with tombs visible today, the ‘invisibles’ are those recorded from the 1928 map entries (thus helping to fill the information gap there).
The high mismatch points to irregular registry keeping and many graves that were al-
ready invisible by 1928. Bearing in mind the above breakdown is only for a brief pe-riod of the cemetery, we can nevertheless tentatively surmise the true number of
burials must be about twice what was calculated (all categories) bringing the number
to between 600 and 700. The above register brought out many previously unknown
surnames including Hill, who could represent a predecessor of the influential Athens family.

Notes: 1- Despite the local government edict of 1934 preventing further burials in Caravan bridge
cemetery, it is apparent that as late as 1951 (re-interring of George Albon) it was used.
Thus unless other wise stated we can assume that all names on this list were buried in this cemetery at least until 1951, as it was the traditional ‘Smyrna Anglican cemetery’.
From this list we can surmise the persons buried there as there was no survey done of the
cemetery prior to its destruction ~1980. Those stated as buried as elsewhere have been
highlighted in orange and it is not clear why the Bornova burials should be in this regis-ter. From the Kate Carmanyalo record of 1920 we have a last fix on the existence of a
20
Buca Greek cemetery which was presumably destroyed as with other Orthodox cemeter-
ies a little after 1922. 2- From the ‘abode’ section we see Julie Rose who died at 1928 lived in Turan, tentatively
confirming the wealthy position the rose family had attained through their soap manufac-
turing business. It also gives us a minimum date prior to the abandonment of the settle-
ment, with the movement in of industry. 3- From the few addresses we have recorded by Ft Bird in the 1950s we see that the persons
were congregated within a small zone in the heart of Alsancak. It seems that ‘Gül sok’
continued to be used after the name changes, a road which bordered the former British embassy, (now Kızılay cad?). The Buca address of ‘Giovanna Mary Matilda Barker’ is
identical with that of H.V. Barff, pointing to being a close relation.
4- The two pairs of dead airmen of 1917 being killed on same days points to being in the same planes and possibly were the crew of the airmen Mr Edward de Jongh remembers
as belonging to the bombers operating from Imroz.
5- The records for the 8 British prisoners of war who presumably died mostly of disease is
illuminating as it shows present day Şirinyer was the location of a POW camp. There is no indication where these men were initially buried, there might be the possibility their
remains were later exhumed by the Commonwealth war graves commission as their
graves are now shown from the Internet as being in Baghdad. It is improbable the Turk-ish authorities would have gone to the trouble of transporting the bodies that distance.
The choice of gravesite may have been dictated to unite all former members of the Egypt
Expeditionary Force (E.E.F.) to which these men seem to belong to, who suffered a hu-miliating siege and surrender (29 April 1916) in Kut-al-Amara in southern Iraq against
Turkish forces. These prisoners are likely to have come from that debacle. More details
of that battle in www.1914-1918.net/meso_bat8.htm
Of the 8 war dead the Commonwealth war graves commission web site shows 4 matches, where only one, C. Barker, has a date of dead mismatch of only a day.

6- By cross checking with results of names of parents detailed on Commonwealth War
Graves commission site, we see Edith Amelia Rice who died in 1956 was the mother of
WWI dead Cecil Pierce. 7- Of the Buca community frequently referred in recollections is Harold Parkinson who
died 1951 and popularly known as ‘Parky’.
Document 5 (Ms 30581)
‘Photographs of St. John church’, is incorrect as they show the internal and external views of
Christ church, Crimean Memorial, Istanbul Anglican church. A correction note with a photo of the Alsancak church has been sent to the library authorities who have since promised to
relabel. The 1968 dated photos are interesting since they show the old internal layout of the
church before it was shut down and deconsecrated, without the present dividing panel be-
tween the chancel and the nave. The other differences to the present layout visible in the photo (1-4) is a banner under the rose window reading, ‘CHRIST IS RISEN ALLELUIA’,
wicker chairs, and no roof to the pulpit.
21
The Polaroid shot (3-4) of a graveyard appears to be a view of the Buca cemetery, taken
from the drive looking East showing some of the leaning tombstones along the SE wall, probably taken pre 1991.

Notes: 1. As with all Bornova registers, this covers the period post-1922, when all records
were lost in the looting of the church.
2. 12 out of the 20 marriages recorded show Bornova addresses for both partners,
demonstrating the close knit community, and the clear unimportance of other former Anglican neighbourhoods, for this period.
3. From entry no 8 we see, Godfrey Whittall with whom we have been ‘acquainted’
through Graham Lee’s research on the past of Çanakkale, had a son also a merchant in 1936, providing a minimum date before their emigration.
Document 7 (Ms 30782) – Church of St John, Smyrna - counterfoil of marriage certificate
book
The period covered is from 1920-1969, however many stubs have been left blank and many
are repeated 2 /3 times, probably for legal reasons. Some have been marked ‘consular copy’, eg. 1927 Cecil Warren & Macelle Topuz
Document 8 (Ms 30780) – Bornova baptisms (1924-94) Only 16 out of the total of 72 were transcribed, as they were deemed to show interesting in-
formation relating to abode or profession of father.

Notes:
1. The above selected list provides 3 family names for Turan, and one for Bayraklı,
both settlements comparatively sparsely populated by English speakers, and today of which very little is known. The Turan father’s professions having an industrial sound
to them, suggests they were employed by the early British industries in the area, such
as BP, that ironically eventually destroyed the habitability of this place ‘out of town’.
2. Like the early railways, British staff seemed to be involved in road building, at a later date, at least for the Black sea transit road (no 36).
3. The Levantines seemed to be involved in the Second World War effort despite living
in a neutral country, as shown by Douglas Whittall being employed by the ‘ministry of war transport’.

Note: There is a website detailing a ‘Composite Index’ of baptism, Marriage and burial re-
cords of the British Chapel of Smyrna – Turkey 1795-1832, a time period not recorded by me, but almost certainly transcribed from the Guildhall deposited registers. No information
about the person who compiled the web site is forthcoming, however there seems to be a
Malta link to that person’s interest from name associated web sites. There has been a prolif-eration of genealogical web sites with the Internet revolution, and not all compilers / web
publishers are necessarily related to ‘their’ lists. The web site content of
http://website.lineone.net/~stephaniebidmead/smyrna.htm is included here for extra informa-tion, though at present I cannot vouch for the accuracy of its content. Some spelling correc-
tions have been done, such as Dutilk, Bargigh changed to Dutilh, and Bargigli respectively.

Notes: 1- Despite the records above belonging to the British chapel of Smyrna, there is a substan-
tial proportion of ‘foreign’ nationals present who were clearly not related to British fami-
lies, but many undoubtedly had trade contacts. This shows that even in the early days the Smyrna Levantines formed a harmonious melting pot. A remarkable aspect of these non-
Anglo-Saxon names is the preponderance of Dutch names (Dutilh, Slaars, Sebold, Lan-
gensee, Hochepied, Van Lennep) pointing to the especially close relationship between
these two communities. 2- There are some interesting Maltese (or alleged) connections such as James Louis Gout
(married 1813) being ‘of Malta’. This probably represents a ‘way station’ where that
strategic British colony provided a home for many British nationals who may have spent up to a few generations there. Thus it is not surprising that some other British families
members have gone through Malta (Purdie, Maltass, Werry etc.).
3- Some family names seem to have died out shortly after this period, as not all the com-
munity stayed on till 1922. Thus we see George Boddington, the British Chancellor, pos-sibly the reason why this family first came, being buried in 1829. Other family names we
hear little or nothing of in later generations are Lee, Jones, Jackson, Hayes, Fisher and in
most cases, we lose the trail, and thus know very little about, apart from minor details such as ‘John Lee, merchant’.
4- We know from the Barbara Dobbins Istanbul Ferikoy American section cemetery listing
that William Noseworthy Churchill was buried in that cemetery in 1846. The listing gives us info as to his profession being ‘US government’, married to ‘Beatrice’ and being
the editor of a Turkish newspaper, confirmed and expanded upon by me in ‘Database
analysis’. It seems he lived for a time in Smyrna and married Beatrice daughter of Joseph
Belhomme, of Smyrna in 1824.
