As we enter a new season full of family and celebration,

we keep with us the memory and legacy of Fran Udell. She

passed this summer at age 94, just a year after the passing

of her husband, Mayer. Fran was honored with heartfelt

outpourings of love, kindness and support from friends,

colleagues and customers alike. We wish to thank you all for

acknowledging her legacy as not only the cornerstone of the

London Jewelers family business, but as a woman devoted to the

well-being and prosperity of the entire Udell family.

She posessed a strength, fortitude and savvy that helped defi ne

the name and reputation of London Jewelers over the decades.

Her spirit will always remain at the core of the entire London

Jewelers family for generations to come and inspire us every day.

Welcome to our 2015 fall/winter issue of London Jewelers Magazine. In this issue you’ll fi nd two beautiful additions. First there’s our Special High Jewelry Section full of the crème-de-la-crème of our expansive jewelry collection. And as a special insert, we also present our new Watch Catalog featuring the latest timepieces from the most celebrated international brands in the watch industry.

As we look to the new year, we have something very exciting to share with you! In the coming months we will be introducing the much-anticipated, completely redesigned and vastly expanded London Jewelers Watch Salon & Loft in our Americana Manhasset fl agship destination. Everyone from the newest watch enthusiast to the most seasoned timepiece connoisseur will marvel at the sheer depth and

breadth of our collection. The Salon will be home to fully branded store-in-store experiences from Rolex, Patek Philippe and Cartier, and lined end-to-end with dedicated brand walls and case-lines from the absolute fi nest watch brands in the world. The fully remodeled, 5,500-sq.-ft. space will be meticulously appointed to

whet the appetite of the horologically inclined. When guests venture up the regal

stairs to the Loft, they’ll discover a completely

reimagined lounge and giftware salon complete

with an espresso bar, humidor and our new watch repair center.

CHANEL’s latest timepiece, the BOY•FRIENDwristwatch, puts a masculine face on femininity.

Handsome, chic and utterly self-confident, itmarks the passage of time in an elegant manner, whetherpaired with jeans and a T-shirt, a dress suit or an eveningoutfit.

Inspired by Mademoiselle Coco Chanel’s iconic gender-bending designs, the BOY•FRIEND is at once contemporaryand classic. Its shapely octagon silhouette pays homage tothe beveled-glass stopper of CHANEL’s legendary No. 5perfume bottle and to Paris’ celebrated Place Vendôme.

The BOY•FRIEND, available in medium and large sizes,is equipped with a small date counter at 6 o’clock and anumberless opaline dial with a fine guilloche finish.

It is available in 18K beige gold with or withoutdiamonds and in 18K white gold with diamonds. One style ismanual winding; the other features a quartz movement.

From its name and large, bold face to its semi-mattealligator strap, the BOY•FRIEND thinks nothing of shakingup traditional feminine watchmaking codes.

The BOY•FRIEND takes its couture cues from CHANEL’sfirst line of watches, which debuted in 1987, and its firstunisex sports watch, J12, which was introduced in 2000.

And it continues the fashion revolution started byMademoiselle Chanel, who is credited with liberatingwomen from the shackling silhouette of the corset byintroducing the form-flattering “little black dress” and theCHANEL suit.

Her first shop, which was dedicated to millinery, openedin Paris in 1910. Three years later, at her second boutique inDeauville, she introduced sportswear to the staid, stiflingwardrobes of women.

Through the decades, she continued to break barriers.In 1920, the CHANEL suit debuted; in 1921, she createdCHANEL No. 5, the fragrance that made her house worldfamous, and in 1924, at a time when it was all but taboo, sheintroduced her first line of makeup.

That same year, she used tweed, a traditionallymasculine fabric, in women’s suits. And in 1927, her daringCuir de Russie fragrance audaciously evoked equestrianallure and added notes of Virginia tobacco and leatherboots.

By the 1930s, Mademoiselle Chanel was creatingcostumes for Hollywood stars, and by the 1960s, stylesetters Jackie Kennedy, Liz Taylor, Jane Fonda and GraceKelly were wearing her suits and two-tone sling-back shoeswhile carrying her hands-free quilted purses.

It is within this context that the BOY•FRIEND passes thetime, never too quickly or too slowly but at just the righttempo to make its own style statement.

The Zip necklace, a witty yet refined masterpiece ofingenuity, has remained an iconic signature of famedFrench jeweler Van Cleef & Arpels since the conception of

its original design in the 1930s.It was the Duchess of Windsor, a woman of profound beauty

and royal taste, who suggested in 1938 that Renée Puissant, theMaison’s artistic director and daughter of co-founder Alfred VanCleef, create a jewel that drew inspiration from an everydayobject: the zip fastener.

It took Van Cleef & Arpels’ master jewelers over a decade tosee the piece through to realization. The first Zip necklace,created in 1950, featured round and baguette-cut diamonds setin platinum. It was a technological tour de force, serving the dualpurpose of being both beautiful jewelry and a fully functionalzipper. The Zip necklace is also notable for its transformability.Certain variations can be zipped fully closed, converting fromnecklace to bracelet.

For decades to follow, the design of the Zip necklace wouldbe revisited, but always remained true to its original form. TheZip Antique Sunflower Emeraude, a contemporary variation ofthe Zip necklace, features emeralds, diamonds, onyx and pearlsset in 18K white gold.

With the creation of every Zip necklace, the Maison drawsinspiration from the world of couture as a discrete homage tothe city of its origins. The Zip Couture Houppe necklace featuresnearly 1,400 diamonds set in 18K white gold. A remarkably fluidpiece, its stones emulate a ribbon of diamonds, which can beworn traditionally toward the front, or draping down the back.

Captain Mark Kelly earned the entire nation’s admiration on January 8, 2011when his wife, Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, was shot in anassassination attempt in Tucson, Arizona. He stood by her side through

her difficult recovery, and the couple eventually co-founded Americans forResponsible Solutions, which encourages our country’s leaders to stand up forlaws that make communities safer from gun violence.

But that day wasn’t the first time Kelly had made the news, or the first timeAmericans had reason to be proud of this remarkable man.

The 51-year-old New Jersey native is a heavily decorated U.S. Naval aviatorwho flew nearly 40 missions during Operation Desert Storm. Moreover, for 15years, he was one of this country’s most revered astronauts. He has spent morethan 50 days in space, and has visited the International Space Station on fourseparate occasions.

Intriguingly, Mark isn’t the only member of the Kelly family to have left ourplanet; his identical twin brother, Scott, is also an astronaut, making the twomen the only siblings who have ever traveled in space.

So it’s not all that suprising that the Kellys have proved to be theperfect subjects for NASA’s groundbreaking “Twins Study,” which willhelp scientists learn more about humans’ adjustment to time in space,which will hopefully lead to more complex deep-space missions in thenear future.

Mark is serving as the “control subject,” which allows him to stay on theground, while Scott is spending an entire year aboard the International SpaceStation along with a Russian cosmonaut. Both brothers will undergo the sameexperiments, which will concern such subjects as the impact of the radiation inspace on a person’s genes, the impact of zero gravity on the ocular nerve, andthe impact of space flight on human cognition. The fact that they have identicalDNA is an invaluable element of what researchers will discover.

This study is literally the chance of a lifetime for NASA, as well as for theKelly brothers.

Few people understand the importance of the “big finish” as well as Scott Pruett does!

To begin, Pruett has been racing cars for over 30years, winning nearly 100 professional races in his storiedcareer, including five Grand-Am championships and threeTrans-Am championships. But the 55-year-old Roseville,California native is more than just a wizard behind thewheel.

He and his wife Judy have authored a series of popularchildren’s books, including Rookie Racer and Twelve LittleRace Cars, although their three children, Lauren, Cameron,and Taylor, are no longer the target audience.

Their greatest achievement to date, however, may be thecreation of Pruett Vineyard, the winery that Scott and Judybegan at their breathtakingly beautiful home in Auburn,California less than a decade ago: This couple clearly knowshow to turn their passion into success.

Scott’s interest in the earth comes naturally; hisgrandfather was a farmer, and his father did farming beforeturning his attention to aerospace. Auburn has been an areafor winemaking ever since the Gold Rush. And Scott is a truehands-on vintner, even originally clearing the three acres heuses himself, and doing his own planting.

Still, the Pruetts were smart enough to hire wine expertBrian Mox as a consultant. And many of the Pruetts’ wines,such as their 2012 Championship Cuvee, have earned top-level scores from Wine Spectator. (It received 96 points, thehighest-rated '12 syrah from California.) The vineyard alsoproduces sought-after syrahs and cabernet sauvignons, someof which are actually named after their children.

For the conception of the Clé de Cartier, the challenge was deceptively

simple: to create a perfect circle. To do so, any sharp edges were eliminated, the

bezel was gently rounded and the horns were tapered.

The collection features the company’s caliber 1847 MC, the brand-new Cartier

Manufacture movement; the name refers to the date of the creation of Maison

Cartier. Its automatic dual-direction winding mechanism gets its robust stability

from a specially conceived lever system and boasts a 42-hour power reserve.

But what is equally unusual about the collection is that Cartier has

practically reinvented its signature sapphire crown. The jewel is now inserted so

that it remains flush to the metal surrounding it, providing a variation on a classic

look. To reset the time and date, the crown is twisted, a motion that recalls the

traditional turning of a key to wind up a clock. In fact, the collection takes its title

from Clé, which is the French word for key and is a nod to its turnkey movement.

As is true of every Cartier piece, the Clé de Cartier is a perfect pairing of

timeless style and modern Swiss technology.

MB&F’S WATCHES ALSO FUNCTION ASKINETIC ART OBJECTS.

Not all watch companies are createdequal.

The Geneva-based companyMB&F was founded by entrepreneurMaximilian Büsser (left), who spentseven years as managing director ofHarry Winston Rare Timepieces inGeneva. Over the past 10 years, hehas worked with some of the world’sleading independent, hyper-creativewatchmaking specialists (MB&Fstands for Maximilian Büsser &Friends) to develop radical limited-

edition watches, notably its unconventional Horological Machines andhistorically inspired Legacy Machines.

Büsser sees these timepieces as works of art, suitable for eithergender. “A painter, a sculptor or a photographer does not create art fora man or a woman. Art is mainly gender neutral,” he says. “At MB&F,we create kinetic art based on watchmaking, and it appeals towhomever it resonates with.”

The company’s first Horological Machine, the HM1, was unveiled in2007, and its sculpted, three-dimensional case and beautifully finishedengine set the standard for the series: the HM2, HM3, HM4, HM5, HM6and HMX. The HM4 Thunderbolt was named the Best Concept andDesign Watch at the 2010 Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Geneve, and theHM6 Space Pirate received the top prize at the international Red DotAwards in 2015.

In 2011, the company launched its round-cased Legacy Machinecollection, which was inspired by Büsser’s affinity for 18th- and 19th-century pocket watches.

“I asked myself: ‘What would have happened if I had been born in1867 instead of 1967?’ In the early 1900s, the first wristwatchesappeared, and I would want to create three-dimensional machines forthe wrist. But there are no Star Wars or fighter jets for my inspiration,”he says. “But I do have pocket watches, the Eiffel Tower and JulesVerne, so what might my more traditional machine look like? It has tobe round, and it has to be three-dimensional. Legacy Machine No. 1 wasmy answer.”

With its large, sedately oscillating balance, domed dials, historicalbridge design and classical fine finishing, the Legacy Machine No. 1carried home the Best Men’s Watch Prize and the Public Prize from the2012 Grand Prix.

MB&F showcases its Horological Machines in innovative art spacesin Geneva and Taipei: The M.A.D. (Mechanical Art Devices) Galleriesare a “captivating universe of kinetic art,” says Büsser. In thosegalleries, the timepieces are placed alongside carefully curated piecescommissioned from around the world.

He marvels that his simple idea to create kinetic machines thatgive time has morphed into a small company that makes not onlyHorological and Legacy Machines, but also concepts like clocks andmusic boxes for other mechanical artisans.

“Was that planned at the beginning?” he says. “No, not at all. So ourstory will be written as it flows. And I do not know where it goes. But Iam proud that we have written our own story and not followed anyoneelse’s.”

A former runway model, Atwood worked as head accessories designer of Versace and creativedirector of Bally before focusing on his own brand. We recently caught up with him to talkabout what and who inspires him to create his signature styles, as well as his greatestaccomplishment and his downtime pleasures.How did you come to be where you are now? Definitely a lot of perserverance and focus. I was always interested in fashion, but it wasn’tuntil I was hired by Gianni Versace to work in Milan that I really got my hands dirty andstarted designing shoes. I was hired at Versace to design Versus women’s wear withDonatella. Right after I was hired, Gianni asked me to design shoes for their haute coutureshow in Paris and that started it all. The rest is history.How would you describe your design style? Chic classics with a twist. It’s always about amazing color and never compromising whatyou believe in—and more importantly giving women what they want!Who do you design for? Women who aren’t afraid to feel or be sexy!What or who inspires you?Confident women constantly inspire me. I am also always inspired by music and theplaces I travel, because color is such an important part of my DNA. What’s in store for Brian Atwood looking toward the future?I am focusing on expanding my brand in other categories and keeping the aspirationalfactor, as well as reaching a broader customer base. What has been your proudest moment? I definitely think that winning a CFDA award was a major accomplishment because itcame from my industry peers. It’s almost like winning an Oscar if you are an actor. What is your greatest accomplishment to date? Every time I see a woman in my shoes it’s a great pleasure for me! That is the highest

compliment any designer can receive.If you could, what advice would your present-self give to your past-self whenyou were just starting your design career? When looking for a business partner, always trust your gut. It never lies. Lastly, what do you do to unwind and relax? I take a holiday on the Mediterranean, either Italy or Greece. If I’m at home in New York orMilan, then I do yoga and meditate.
