Whoa, I'm not sure if it's because we've been busy making magazines all year, or whether it just seems to happen every. single. year. but 2013 has really flown by.
We've been rooting through our records and playlists to find some of our favourite tracks of the last year, and it seemswe've been super-lucky to have had many of our most-loved gracing the cover of our little magazine. If you've missed them, get on over to the site and give our playlist a listen.
It looks like 2014 is already lining up to be a stellar year; we've picked some of the acts that we're most looking forward to hearing more from, but in my head the list is pretty much infinite. So get your party hats ready, grab some tickets to one of London's many ridiculous New Year’s parties, and put the champagne on ice.
We'll see you beauties again in February.

“Some of the squares were really offended by ‘Gone Feral’” Holden told us in June. Always good to know we ain’t square. That spiralling, disorientating start. That gradual, dizzying build. Halfway through, when it gets super-crazed; escalating higher and higher - ever more deranged - but never losing it. ‘Gone Feral’ freezes time, obscures everything that isn’t ‘Gone Feral’. It sounds furious. It sounds like it’s going to get you. It sounds like nothing else on earth. It’s absolutely, mind-blowingly incredible.

What’s your single of the year? The one you’ve listened to most? The one that instantly transports you to times and places you’ve heard it? The one that makes you want to hug and sing and dance with all your favourite people? The one, with those bits where everything whirls round, swirling out of control with gleeful effervescence that make you swirl and whirl round with it? The one that still makes your spine tingle every single time you hear it? Well...‘Bros’ does what every great pop song should do; it makes the world a better place for four minutes.

THE LONDON IN STEREO TRACKS OF THE YEAR
It’d be easy to pigeonhole Deptford Goth, easy to lump him in with any number of hoodie-up-nightbus-blues merchants. But this is different; an innately pop heart beats within these almost painfully personal tunes. No more so than on ‘Feel Real’ which we’ve crushed so hard on all year, regardless of time and place.
DEPTFORD GOTHFEEL REAL
There's something about DENA that just makes you want to be her best friend. Maybe it's the slightly awkward, offbeat stylings of Thin Rope, maybe it's her amazing Bulgarian- via-Berlin accent that fits the track perfectly, or maybe it's just that she makes really fun music. Whatever it is, this track still has us hooked.
DENATHIN ROPE
The moment Tennis really delivered on their promise:It’s the pacing that nails it, holding off from the chorus for just exactly the right amount of teasing time.Does it sound like Tennis have ever seen a mean street?Dude, it just doesn’t matter, this is pop music; perfect, dreamy, wonderfully realised, pop music.

Before 2013 had really had a chance to get going, a track appeared that wrestled the internet into submission. ‘Before I Ever Met You’ was about as close as it comes to the perfect 21st century breakup song: sultry, brooding, lyrically honest and painfully relatable, the track introduced another alluring chanteuse into the ever- expanding scene.
With little more than a name and a striking portrait to go by, LA’s BANKS had arrived, and this initial outing was quickly backed-up by a handful of equally beguiling tracks, oozing passion and a smoky mystique that projected her beyond peers.
However speaking to the young siren there is an endearing and relaxed contrast; “That’s what’s so funny! Everyone when they meet me says they always expect this dark little creature; I’m a bright little creature!” she says down the phone on her way to Shoreditch Town Hall – the venue for her captivating, sold out debut London show. There’s a gentle reproach at the implication that her work is perpetually pathetic; “I write happy songs now.I just write all types of songs, whatever I’m feeling. I’ll always have emotions; that’s the good thing about being a human!”
And it’s true of course; while tracks like ‘Warm Water’ don’t immediately appear “happy”, there is certainly an underlying feeling of optimism and hope to counterbalance the powerful darkness of ‘Fall Over’ and ‘Waiting Game’. Indeed drawing on these latter feelings is where her artistic journey began; “I guess it’s been developing my whole life. I started writing about
ten years ago when I was going through a really dark time and I just discovered this passion that overwhelmed me and became addicted to it.
It was a progression from there – I taught myself how to play piano and all these melodies came out and let all these little beasts in my mind out and made me feel at peace; it’s just been the biggest blessing to discover it.”
And she wasn’t the only one to become enamoured with the results of this passion: a worldwide tour with The Weeknd – a suitably carnal match – followed;“He’s amazing. He’s just a special person and he works so hard, I learnt a lot from him on tour.” On top of this, an exciting production team emerged that will see out the forthcoming album with BANKS;“I am pretty much sticking to that crew;I’ve maybe added a few more and there might be a cool collaboration in there, but I’ve been pretty much with Silva, SOHN and TEED [Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs]. I don’t feel like I’m done exploring my sound with them at all.”
As we approach that inevitable ‘Ones To Watch’ period, BANKS has to be someone the entire industry very justifiably has eyes on, but she’s taking it all in her stride;“It’s amazing. I’m just soaking everything in. My music is like my whole heart so if people connect with it and I get these positive responses, I can’t even describe the feeling that it gives me; I’m just floating through air at the moment.”

“I died a week ago.” As opening gambits go, SOHN’s was stunning. Released in 2012, “The Wheel” showcased the haunting clarity of his voice, juxtaposing it against clattering beats, deftly spliced vocal samples and the warm hum of analogue synths. Since then, he’s shared a string of superb solo tracks – plus brooding productions for BANKS and Kwabs –and established his own unique strain of electronic soul in the process.
Though the music’s poured forth freely, he’s been distinctly less generous with biographical information. For example, we still don’t know his real name. “Nobody does”, he smiles, proffering no answers. He will concede to being “born in South London”, however, and to playing in several “terrible bands” before ‘Kid A’ introduced him to electronic sounds. “It was really inspiring hearing an indie band create music from sounds that I had access to. Also, I’m a bit of a megalomaniac,” he laughs, “And I quickly realised it’sa lot easier to make the computer do what you want than it is people.”
Once solo, he established an unexpected following in Austria, so made a permanent move to Vienna in 2010. The impact on his songwriting was immediate: “I just relaxed. It was like my brain slowed down longenough to make music that was at peace with itself.”
And yet, from the introspection of‘The Wheel’ to the regret pervading ‘Lessons’, no matter how far SOHN’s voice soars, his words are always anchored by melancholy. So is it fair to describe his default setting as “dolorous”? “I form lyrics using the
sound of words. Of course, those words probably reflect subconscious, psychological concerns, but I never examine their meanings because I don’t want songs to become dishonest.”
This quest for artistic honesty is also the reason he’s operating under a pseudonym: “I don’t want my own insecurities or ego-trips filtering into the music. It’s weirdly therapeutic to throw the things I don’t need out of my head and allow the space to fill up. It’s like method acting to the point where there’s nothing else there anymore: I just want to let it destroy me.”
His debut album’s due in spring – through 4AD – and is apparently “80-90% finished”. Unsurprisingly, it’s self-produced, but SOHN still anticipates it raising eyebrows in other respects:“It’s more song-driven than people might expect. And I didn’t want to make an album that was too dark, or lacking air.An album’s like a big empty house: if you don’t open any windows it’s never going to feel fresh. On this album, the windows are wide open.”
What with further collaborations with BANKS and Kwabs already underway, and a trip to L.A. to produce “some big artists” scheduled, 2014’s shaping up to be a breakthrough year for SOHN.So where would he like to be in twelve months’ time? “I don’t know. I’m massively driven, but I don’t necessarily have a specific target. All I know is I’m gunning down this road and I’ll keep going ‘til I’ve gone far enough.”

Kelela Mizanekristos possesses a unique voice. The kind of voice that you’d say stops you right in your tracks if it wasn’t so beguilingly stealthy. As evidence, all you need to do is listen to ‘Bank Head,’ the breakout track from earlier this year. Her voice tiptoes over skittering drum beats moving between melancholic longing and unadulterated joy.Now she’s released her debut mixtape ‘Cut 4 Me’ which features an extended version of this track as well as revealing a singer with extraordinary promise.Actually, scratch promise – it showcases a singular talent; one headed for big things. As the only daughter of Ethiopian parents who had emigrated to the States in the 1970s, the idea of being at onceoutside and inside of things seems to permeate her ideas: of the familiar and the alien; attraction and resistance, clever and visceral.
And it’s that which helps to make her music so captivating. Working with a handful of producers who are part of Night Slugs and its American imprint, Fade to Mind, she’s created a sound that is part R&B, part future-electro. And it makes the mixtape an absolutely stunning listen.A mixtape which could easily be an album proper; it’s a 50-minute mixture of massive bass lines and serrated rhythms, as well as less-is-more sonics that give her vocals chance to shine. It makes you wonder what she could achieve in 2014. As adept at producing a club banger as much as a stripped back, heartbreaking ballad, hers is a voice that you’ll be hearing a lot more of.

At the core of Forrests' “ambient” debut EP 'Wilder' beats a nihilistic heart.A driving force whose electronic impulses push analogue blood through digital veins, the band's field recordings scraping at otherwise pristine surfaces with a life affirming inexactitude.Every detail can be felt as it passes just below the consistently woozy surface. Senses heightened, a pupil-dilating expanse unfolds, melding broad cinematic strokes with post-rock thrills.A throbbing cerebral sonic palette finally emerges, one that exists somewhere between the raw devastation of Fuck Buttons and the delicate microcosms of Boards of Canada. Experimenting with lo-fi homemade instruments, unnerving off-season holiday homes, shipping crate containers and snowball snare drums it seems fair to say though that
Paul O’Reilly and Owen O’Mahon, the Dublin duo behind Forrests, are more than just the sum of their parts.Accompanied by the likes of Ryan Vail, Mmoths and Unknown, Forrests find themselves amidst a flurry of exciting electronic music to make its way across the Irish Sea. And like many of them, O’Reilly and O’Mahon are keeping a watchful gaze on the privacy of their project - shying away from revealing too much about their roots or their future - but with a creative calibre of this depth, you can rest assured we'll be alerting you to the moment we hear more.

There’s something about Scandinavia. Beneath the shiny veneer of perfect smiles and sensible infrastructure, there’s a certain melancholy that seems to plague the natives. Perhaps it’s those long winters that swallow up daylight and threaten to plunge even the cheeriest into a desperate pit of seasonal depression, but whatever it is has a lot to answer for - not least the phenomenon of Stockholm’s booming pop scene, one which has grown in recent years into a veritable, ahem, smörgåsbord of talent.
“I eat my dinner in my bathtub/then I go to sex clubs/watching freaky people gettin’ it on,” were the first words uttered by Tove Nilsson on her breakthrough ‘Habits’, an anthem for the drinking-oneself-into-oblivion stage of a failed relationship. Coupled with last year’s ‘Love Ballad’, we witnessed one hell of a promising introduction; confident in its Withnail & I-levels of bleak lyrical humour, backed by dark synths and crisp beats, delivered with a voice of such power that so many of her fellow patriots seem to share. In her most recent offering, ‘Out Of Mind’, any suggestion that Tove Lo lacked the substance required to propel her into the big leagues was entirely banished.
It’ll come as little surprise to fans of Robyn, Niki and the Dove and, particularly, recent blog-favourite Faye that Tove Lo shares their city, for this blend of smart, melodic, atmospheric and sorrowful brilliance has become synonymous with the Swedish capital - and in 2014, Tove Lo is on course to become the latest representative of what’s arguably the most important country in pop music today.

Kathryn-Leigh Beckwith aka Kitty (formerly Kitty Pryde) first surfaced in 2012, with the brattish yet refreshing 'Okay Cupid'. It seemed like that would be it, destined to appear in numerous “Where Are They Now?” columns. But at the beginning of 2013 she released EP 'Daisy Rage', and suddenly everyone was forced to reevaluate her brand of ambient pop-culture-heavy hip-hop. People started taking her seriously. With debut LP 'Flowerviolence' due in 2014, she might just surprise you.Jack McKenna
Confessional records aren't always stacked with bangers, but George Cassavetes borrows equally from epic-pop bombastics and slick RnB slow jams on debut EP ‘Faded’.Calling on famous pals, Friends' Samantha Urbani and her beau Dev Hynes on the gorgeous titular piece, George sets a new bar for tear-smudged storytelling. Another jewel in London electronic imprint Greco-Roman's glittering crown, vocalist Tirzah paired up with revered producer Micachu on debut EP 'I'm Not Dancing' this year. By the time ‘Song For A Granular Piano’s wafted pianos usher out William Doyle’s softened, looped and layered croon for the final time, any cynicism surrounding his transition from indie-rock frontman to progressive electronic don,
Following a series of publicity-stunts-masquerading- as-art (intentional no-shows, posting false rumours about themselves online, et al), it seemed almost possible that the heady wave of delirium propelling noise-rap troupe Death Grips could be coming to an end. Then, in however
much time it takes to upload an entire album onto a file-sharing website, we're suddenly blown out of the water again.‘Government Plates’, Death Grips' third (and yet again another free) album, may see the group treading the same ground as its predecessors, but when the music, and all surrounding it, is this exhilarating and raw, it's impossible to care about anything else. Luke Morgan Britton
East India Youth, has been wholly dispersed. Performing alongside egocentric 'pubby' guitar bands precipitated a retreat into the bedroom, intent on completing his three-year opus‘Total Strife Forever’. Doyle’s full-length debut is an elegant medley of styles and genres, a culmination of his precision approach and penchant for juxtaposition. From focal point 'Heaven How Long', with its bobbing, weaving bass blips, analog synth swells and incessant snare, to the ambient Eno-inspired ebb and flow of 'Total Strife Forever III', Doyle executes each plunging, coalescent mini-epic with a disarmingly light touch. Although the first two tracks offer little in the way of warmth, that’s soon rectified on 'Dripping Down'.A pin-wheeling firework punctuated by blood-pumping, exotic percussion; it rattles along at express train pace, towing Doyle’s curt, coiffed choirboy vocal along to a climax of hymnal “umming” and “ahhing”.It's an album of Spirograph motorik grooves and rocket-booster Korg thrums, of plucked strings and lilting church organs which sway like neon sea anemones. Human, touching, yet somehow transcendent, and spacey: a world away from appeasing the lager-swilling lads of a previous life. Dan Carson

In the year of bombast, where major label marketing campaign budgets became a talking point in their own right, the quiet Bandcamp release is King and presently it's Mutual Benefit who occupy the understated throne. The work of Brooklyn via Ohio/Austin/Boston man
Jordan Lee, ‘Love's Crushing Diamond’ is an altogether languid affair whose short 33 minute running time prevents it from sprawling too far afield. Possessing a rare warmth and a wonderfully organic instrumental core, over seven tracks his delicate voice weaves a misty eyed impression of roads travelled, losses felt and experiences shared.Lauren Down

Drenched in reverb, filtered through sketchy radio waves, full of skittering vocals and boasting vivacious and vicious melodies, ‘Cursing The Sea’ is an album that stamps, skews and slices its way through jagged dimensions. Devilish tongues on first single ‘Heartbeats’ fizz along over contorted strings and the drag of the guitar, the serrated riffage that cuts through the hazy
vocals and metronomic bass beats on ‘Ships’ jolts like a crashing wave, and ‘Sister’ takes deliberate urging over a hammer beat to pleasingly assassinate the ear. Rich and dark, fragments of experiences and minds of the Dublin five-piece blur to create an entity shifting, transient and vibrant. As the title suggests the album is equal parts powerful and soothing, unified and adrift, unknown but familiar - and spectacular. Francesca Baker

Side projects rarely overshadow the main work, and while Broken Bells can provide a different direction from the sometimes repetitive nature of The Shins, hopefully there's no reason to worry that it'll employ Mercer full-time. Burton's behind-the-scenes contribution can
be harshly overlooked, but only because his influence is constantly drowned out by Mercer's sour whining.Ranging from the completely inspired to the amazingly tired, ‘After The Disco’ will have fans tearing their hair out and then desperately trying to glue it back onto their head, before tearing it out all over again. Jack McKenna

Take a few steps back before listening to Jamie Stewart take a sledgehammer to the songbook of Nina Simone, because he blasts away the soulful veneer of these eleven tunes to reveal their dark core as his quivering baritone forges them into something supremely troubling and eerie. Forgiving his rather similar approach to each song, he nails it on ‘Just Say I Love Him’ by capturing Simone’s own troubled intensity as freaky sax legend Tim Berne lays down a searing, soaring accompaniment.By putting his voice so close in the mix, Stewart channels an uneasy claustrophobia that forces you to clutch at his everylast word.Geoff Cowart
XIU XIUNINA Graveface //December 3rd
Bored with the “despicable” English language, Dan Bejar sat down and recorded a few songs penned by Sr
Chinnaro; a group whose major contribution outside of Spain extends solely to, uh, this. It’s not that the linguistic change makes it inaccessible as such, but that without the emotional depth Bejar’s witty, surreal words usually provide his Destroyer handle, the onus is on the music itself. Herein lies its downfall, the charming bossa rhythms and delicate percussion bordering on deathly dull. While mostly chugging along cheerfully in its inoffensive, Devendra Banhart-lite schtick, a few choice moments such as the crunchy guitar of ‘El Rito’ rescue an otherwise forgettable release. Translated from Italian as “light-dark”, ‘Chiaroscuro’ is a pretty excellent description for I Break Horses’ second studio
effort (“Really bloody good” would have beenmore apt, but that’s probably better placed on posters, right?).
Swapping the shoegaze guitar textures of ‘Hearts’ for a combination of sparkling synths and more malevolent, industrial sounds, Maria Lindén’s created a series of densely-layered electronic collages that range rhythmically from the frenetic glitter-pop of ‘Faith’ to the stately throb of ‘We Burn’. Imagine School Of Seven Bells making eyes at Depeche Mode, with Lindén’s glacial coo acting as glue. Like I said, really bloody good.

Switching out, for the most part, guitars in favour of synths, former Grammatics frontman Owen Brinley has made a remarkably deft progression for this new project. His knack for a deviant hook and off-kilter key change remain the backbone of Department M's sound
though, as does that distinctive falsetto that quivers nimbly across these eight tracks. As under his previous guise, the best bits invariably come when he keeps one hand firmly on the reigns of experimentation, as on the excellent pitch freakery of 'pHARMACY' or the Tears For Fears-via-Dalston Superstore stutter of 'The Second Prize'. It's both a bold evolution and a confidentfirst step. Nate Rockwell

Peggy Sue have always stood in the shadows of label mates First Aid Kit. Granted their music isn’t as easily accessible as the Swedish duo’s, but by giving them the time their music exclusively requires you can come away feeling wholesomely rewarded. Now clocking up their
fourth full-length studio release, ‘Choir Of Echoes’ matches their trend of consistently outdoing their former effort. Retaining their exquisite harmonies the trio from Brighton have added wonderful crystalline, dream-like guitars that make tracks like ‘Esme’ and ‘Idle’ flourish and feel beautifully natural. This is the album we knew Peggy Sue had in them, their best yet, and one that can only do them wonders. Matthew French

Presumably, someone influential once sat Mogwai down and told them: “Find something you’re good at, and stick with it.” For years this worked well, but ‘Rave Tapes’, as with 2011’s ‘Hardcore Will Never Die…’, fails to break the sonic conventions that once marked them
out as such a significant force in the world of post-rock. At its worst, it’s compositionally uninspired and flatly produced, yet when the cinematic Mogwai of ‘Les Revenants’ shines through in the urgent drumming on ‘Remurdered’ and the superb climax of ‘Deesh’, and when the soft vocals get their outing on ‘Blues Hour’, it’s hard to stay mad at a thing of such beauty.Jack Urwin

Keeping a rendezvous is hard. These phones, with their tiny maps, make me frown at street corners with my head bowed over a glass screen, wiping the rain off, disappointed with myself, people swerving past my blindness. Five years. I get lost in this city. You pay bills, walk too fast, have an address, go to work on a bike, try to be kind. The second capital city in my life. They give and they take away. A message to meet at 3pm by the Pissarros - third room if you take the immediate doors in right hand corner - straight through the Degas. I'm there a few minutes after the hour and shed three layers - the low, industrial, Soviet-style heat is relentless in these old European monuments. The National Gallery entrance hall is a cliff overlooking a dead empire, staring down a stone grey landscape of formal avenues. With the right light, it's sublime.Inside, two English pictures and two French, and she's late but gorgeous and all:"Did I tell you I once skipped school with my sister to spend a whole afternoon at the Rothko retrospective at Palais de Tokyo?"It's raining or overcast in the Parisian scenes. The dark blue air stretching across Trafalgar square and down Whitehall drifts through them, like a cloud passing in front of two windows. But the English scenes; the crisp, pale orange winter days, that warm light on village lanes, these have no connection with London or with this evening. I keep staring. They remind me of something, far away from today, from tearing out the door this morning after her, from our hour long cycle home together in the December rain.

Ja Ja Ja is something of an institution for those of us with an insatiable appetite for all things Nordic and Scandinavian. A seemingly non-stop stream of imported musical gems regularly sell The Lexington out at their club night, so it comes as no surprise that the time is ripe for a full-on festival. The Roundhouse is bustling, this feels celebratory. Hell, there’s even an Icelandic burger stall, for those of us partial to the odd burger...The observation that this works almost purely because it’s Nordic is never far from our thoughts. The music is disparate and eclectic; there’s no other common thread than geography. But there’s a sense of cohesion, unity and, above all, fun that you simply can’t imagine working as well coming from any other region.
The queue for Sin Fang snakes round corridors, but rewards those that brave it with a glorious show of electropop magnificence.Postiljohnen deliver the live show we’ve been waiting for from them; all-out partyparty times prompting huge dancing scenes during their triumphant Friday night headline slot. NONONO have had a spectacular year and it’s reflected by the packed crowd in the main hall. Every moment feels like it matters, but ‘Pumpin Blood’, especially, is simply huge. One of the year’s great singles played to perfection. The Raveonettes had to cancel, but news that Shout Out Louds are the replacements means we shrug that off. There’s barely a band on the planet that have such a grasp of exquisite chiming indiepop. We’re just grateful that they, and the other acts here, happen to be from one very special place. “Are we okay”? Ruban Nielson, UMO’s timid frontman, enquires, surprisingly polite for a guy clutching fistfuls of beefy riffs. His quest for assurance is peculiar, but it does little to blunt the crowd’s enthusiastic response.
The Motown-flecked leanings of ‘How Can U Luv Me’, an acoustic rendition of ‘Swim And Sleep (Like A Shark)’ and the sublime ‘So Good At Being In Trouble’ are greeted like old friends, mopping up the disappointment lingering from Wampire’s lacklustre support. It is, however, a cover of CAN’s ‘Vitamin C’, flanked by Connan Mockasin, that leaves Camden, and I, within a sumptuous haze. Lee Wakefield

“Are you ready, London?” comes the yell. We think we’re ready, we yell back, we yell we’re ready. We’re not even close.MØ’s off the stage, MØ’s in the crowd, MØ’s absolutely everywhere, MØ’s destroying XOYO.This show is triumphant to an almost ridiculous degree. Energy levels, the likes of which the venue will have rarely seen, get the crowd dancing as one, caught up in this relentlessly euphoric performance. Older songs are greeted with rapturous enthusiasm, ‘XXX 88’ scorches our dancing feet whilst instant classic ‘Never Wanna Know’ gets us all swooning and forlorn. Dave Rowlinson

VINYL IS FOR LIFE, NOT JUST FOR CHRISTMAS...BY LUCIE GRACEThis December when you stroll past Rough Trade and look through the window at all the gorgeous LPs and cute little 45’s, cooing to your friends and loved ones as you point and ask “can we get that one?”, I implore you to stop and think: is vinyl really for you? It’s a huge commitment and you should know a few truths first. Once you dive in and decide to be an owner, there is no going back. You’ll become one of those insufferable people who claim they enjoy the crackling sound as a stylus passes yet another scratch. You will sacrifice hot dinners for weeks on end if it means winning that first Yeah Yeah Yeahs album on picture disk on eBay that has caught your eye. You will come to realise how expensive the upkeep of a good record collection is, as now you’ve got that first Yeah Yeah Yeahs record you’ll need everything else they’ve ever released. You will never want to move house ever again unless you have Arnold Schwarzenegger on hand to carry your crates. You will miss your records when you go on holiday as it’s just not the same with an iPod.You most certainly won’t ever emigrate or live abroad. You will be tied down, weighed down, ever searching for that limited edition Record Store Release Day that slipped through your fingers, for the rest of your life.I fucking love my record collection more than life itself but would I wish this on anyone else? I’m just not sure.
