“Every child is an artist, the problem is staying an artist when you grow up.”–Pablo Picasso

This is a sentiment that we try to bring to every book that we commission, design and steer through the creative process. This Fall marks our biggest ever list and, excitingly, very much our largest ever children’s list. From Marion Deuchars’ beautiful Let’s Make Some Great Art series, to Nina Chakrabarti’s Wonderful World of Fashion and Jason Ford’s superhero universe – we have always believed in the importance of producing design-led books and gifts for children. Whether it be encouraging the use of the paintbrush over the Playstation, or dreaming up and doodling fantastical cities – inspiring the next generation of artists, architects, and designers is perhaps one of the biggest challenges that we can hope to take on as a publisher; and one that ultimately frees in us the ever inventive imagination of the child.

The children’s books that we are proud to publish this season represent not only our uncompromising belief that children deserve leading design, production, and content, but also that they have a huge amount to teach us grown-ups about making beautiful things. Pierre the Maze Detective: The Search for the Maze Stone (p.3) takes us on a trip through an amazing world of underground cities, hot air balloons, tree-top towns, and haunted houses. Throughout the development of this book, our youngest reviewers have steered their way through the book’s 15 magical mazes much faster than any of us could dream of doing!

Packed with Andrew Rae’s amazing drawings, My Crazy Inventions Sketchbook (p.9) gets young inventors designing and doodling their greatest creations. With facts about the craziest inventions in history, it encourages us to rediscover a sense of play and a belief that anything is possible.

It is in this spirit that we try to approach everything else that we do. Each book and gift in our Fall list represents a unique set of creative challenges. From the work of the world’s most influential architects and graphic designers (Architecture and Graphic Design Visionaries, p.18), to previously unpublished and rare examples of vintage flash (100 Years of Tattoos, p.22), every book is an adventure and one that we are delighted and honored to be a part of.

This is MonetSara Pappworth, illustrated by Aude Van Ryn

Claude Monet is best known as a leader of the Impressionists, his paintings defining the style that triggered a revolution in art.

During the eighty-six years of his life, Monet never rested, and was always driven by the urge to paint. And more than two thousand paintings survive from six highly creative decades. Despite being a celebrity among France’s political and cultural elite, Monet never became complacent. Even in his seventies and eighties he was still producing paintings that astounded the art world.

Monet’s work remains highly influential – his abstraction, gestural strokes, and expressive color capturing the imagination of generation after generation of artists.

Sara Pappworth is an art historian, teacher, and photographer who has worked in museum and gallery education for more than 20 years.

Aude Van Ryn studied at Central St Martins and the Royal College of Art in London. Her work has featured in theater posters, packaging for Le Pain Quotidien, and advertising campaigns for clients such as The British Heart Foundation. Her illustration has featured in several exhibitions and she is currently working on shows for galleries in London and Tokyo.

This is KandinskyAnnabel Howard, illustrated by Adam Simpson

Kandinsky didn’t pick up a brush until he was thirty years old. He was an academic with a promising career that he threw away to explore the arts. As an artist he is credited with history’s first abstract painting, but it was his theories that had a profound and lasting impact on the way that people understand and value what art can achieve.

Richly illustrated with specially commissioned artworks and 20 of Kandinsky’s major works, This is Kandinsky forms the perfect introduction to the life of this revolutionary figure in twentieth-century art.

Annabel Howard has taught and lectured in museums in the UK and Italy, and has contributed articles to magazines including Glass, The Spectator, and The White Review.

Adam Simpson has contributed to major exhibitions in London, New York, Edinburgh, Bologna, and Japan. And his work has been shortlisted for a British Design Award and in 2009 he was included in the Art Directors Club Young Guns awards.

This is GoyaWendy Bird and Sarah Maycock

Modern art begins with Goya. He saw his world ripped apart by Napoleon’s armies and then suffered the reactionary backlash as the old order was restored. Against this epic canvas, Goya painted his own observations of humanity, transforming his youthful images of gaily dancing peasants into his mature penetrating studies of human suffering, despair, perseverance, and redemption.

Wendy Bird teaches Spanish art at Birkbeck College, London, among other institutions. Since she first discovered Goya’s prints at art college, the artist has been a constant focus of her study. She has been involved in Spanish street theatre, music and film and is herself a practising artist.

Since being chosen by It’s Nice That as one of the most promising graduates of 2011, Sarah Maycock’s clients have included the likes of Sony Music, The Times, the BBC, Waitrose, Jamie Oliver Magazine, Liberty, MiH Jeans, The Financial Times, The Guardian, Pentagram, Quadrille Publishing, Conran Design, and Kinfolk.

The DetailsIconic Men’s AccessoriesJosh Sims

The Details identifies the authentic classics among men’s accessories and explains how each item has developed. The book tells the stories of their design; the brand, company, or iconic figure that started it all; and how each item has shaped the way men dress today.

The leather biker boot, as we know it today, takes its stylistic cues from the toughened boots worn by the loggers and railway engineers of the American industrial revolution. The origins of the ubiquitous baseball cap can be traced back to the New York Knick’s team caps of 1849 – which were made of straw.

From classic diving watches to the simple pocket square, The Details examines the most important of men’s accessories and offers a complete guide to choosing your own examples.

Josh Sims is a freelance style writer. He contributes to the Financial Times, The Independent, Esquire, and GQ. He is the author of Icons of Men’s Style, Cult Streetwear, and 100 Ideas that Changed Street Style (all Laurence King Publishing).

100 Years of TattoosDavid McComb

Over the past century tattoo culture has emerged from the underground and hit the mainstream. From body art’s early association with sailors, convicts and side-show acts to the current adoption of tattoo culture among celebrities, via the tattoo renaissance of the 1970s, this book reveals the entire history.

Combining a wealth of visual material from across the many cultures and sub-cultures associated with tattoos, including fashion, music, and art, with examples of some of the most exquisite tattoos ever inked, the book shows more than 400 photographs, many published for the first time.

This visual history forms a unique examination of the tattoo as a form of personal expression and will appeal to anyone with an interest in body art and social history, and to anyone planning a tattoo.

Sketching for Architecture + Interior DesignStephanie Travis

Sketching, and the careful observation that it entails, is essential for the successful development of the next generation of designers.

Forty-five step-by-step exercises take the student from the simple three-dimensional forms of furniture, to interiors, to complex building exteriors, and cityscapes. Technical topics covered include tools, line weights, perspective, proportion, composition, shading, serial views, and context. Exercises are illustrated with beautiful sketches specially created by the author.

Sketching for Architecture + Interior Design is an indispensable and practical guide for students wishing to master the art of looking and sketching.

Stephanie Travis is Director and Associate Professor of the Interior Design Program at The George Washington University, Washington, DC. She has extensive academic and professional experience, and was also Associate Editor of the International Journal of Design Education, 2013.

• Students today are over-reliant on digital media and often don’t know how to draw, or assume that they won’t be able to

• 45 exercises take students from single pieces of furniture through to complex cityscapes

• Aimed at interior design and architecture students

A History of Western ArchitectureSixth EditionDavid Watkin

In this highly acclaimed reference work David Watkin traces the history of western architecture from the earliest times in Mesopotamia and Egypt to the eclectic styles of the twenty-first century.

The author emphasizes the ongoing vitality of the Classical language of architecture, underlining the continuity between, say, the work of Ictinus in fifth-century BC Athens and that of McKim, Mead and White in twentieth-century New York.

Authoritative, comprehensive, and highly illustrated, this sixth edition has been expanded to bring the story of western architecture right up to date and includes a separate final chapter on twenty-first century developments, including the role of computers in architecture, sustainability, humanitarian architecture, and very tall buildings.

David Watkin is Emeritus Professor of the History of Architecture at the University of Cambridge and an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects. His many books include Sir John Soane: Enlightenment Thought and the Royal Academy Lectures (1996), Morality and Architecture Revisited (2001), and The Roman Forum (2009).

• Covers the whole history of western architecture from ancient Egypt to the present

• Highly readable and accessible text

• Revised to include updated information on parametric design, sustainability, humanitarian architecture, and tall buildings

Printmaking Second Edition

A Complete Guide to Materials & ProcessBill Fick and Beth Grabowski

Printmaking is a practical and comprehensive guide to printmaking techniques.

This fully updated edition includes expanded chapters on digital and mixed media processes, and a brand new “Print & Make” chapter, which explores the opportunities for creative expression within the many processes available to print makers. The more traditional techniques of relief, intaglio, collograph, lithography, screen printing, and monoprint have also been refreshed with the addition of new images showing a broader range of subject matter, including more contemporary prints and international artists.

Each technique is explored from the development of the printing or digital matrix, through the different stages of creation to image output. Guidance on how to set up a print studio, sections on troubleshooting techniques, and the inclusion of up-to-date lists of suppliers, workshops, and galleries make this an essential volume for beginner and experienced printmakers alike.

Bill Fick is a printmaker and Visiting Assistant Professor in the Art Department at Duke University who has exhibited his work internationally. He is also the director of Cockeyed Press, which specializes in the production of satirical linocut prints.

Beth Grabowski is a print artist and the Zachary Taylor Smith Distinguished Term Professor of Art at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is a past president of SGC International (2012–14), the professional organization for print artists, educators, and printmaking enthusiasts. Her work has been exhibited internationally.

• Clear step-by-step illustrations of all printmaking processes

• A new, detailed section on Japanese Moku Hanga woodblock printing

• New images throughout, including improved process shots and examples of the latest work from contemporary printmakers
